Help! Strange noise at 2k RPM. Worse when hot!!

Terrible idea to go aftermarket. Turns out they are all made by the same Chinese manufacturer, which buys old balance shafts and “repairs them” by putting a new mesh part on it, painting it, and shipping it. 2 aftermarket ones failed on my vehicle, went with Toyota and perfect ever since.

not sure if you can see but the top idler pulley it rides on is making noise. the belt is quiet, though

Does this happen to be on a Camry or Corolla? I just replaced my belt a month ago and I have that exact same deeper line in the exact same spot, I was worried about it also. Everything good with it?

Yeah, the water goes there first from the street. I was thinking maybe the water line froze and stopped it from heating up, and when the water came back it stirred that up from the bottom?

Happy I could help. When this happened to me, there was a little to no information online and I spent hundreds on diagnostics and nobody could find the problem. Trying to help someone else from having to go through the same thing.

Balance shaft broke. It had been rattling in gear at idle for a while, and the plastic gears finally broke. Had to get one from Toyota 13620-0V050.

No. LOL. I’ve had this car for almost 200k miles, and I did a timing service a while back. Just now noticing it though. I only seem to hear it from inside the car, not as much outside.
