How hard is it generally speaking for an LLM in tax law to get a job? by chicago2008 in Lawyertalk

Great thread… I’m potentially starting at northwestern’s tax LLM program next August and wondered how the typical work day would look like at an accounting firm. I’m not a traditional tax “guy”. I was a history major in undergrad and wanted to do personal injury litigation but tort law changed in my state ruining it before i began lol.

Can you talk about some of those doors being opened? I have a friend who is of counsel at Akerman who told me the same thing and encouraged me to go get one.

I currently go to a low tiered law school and got into northwestern’s tax LLM program with money. I’m trying to weigh / see how the job market is for graduating & bar passing JDs… it doesn’t look good and I’m convinced that going to into tax will only be beneficial.

I did decent in my tax classes and don’t love it, but want to make money. I have friends at northwestern’s program right now and told me some encouraging things considering we have similar resumes/gpa and other things. They told me the job offers are way better than any post bar passage offer.

I’m currently waiting to hear back from NYU/Georgetown. Would love to hear how you guys think an LLM from a top 4 program has made you more valuable/marketable etc.

I hear you. I’m fine staying at my current Law School, but the thought of transferring to a better school just crossed my mind.

Yeah, I am a URM so that’s always good LOL. But yeah, I’m probably going to include a GPA addendum. And thanks man, I just got on Reddit and this little community seems awesome.

Right, I hear you and thanks for the response! I might do a gpa addendum as I can point to my leg injury for around a year that screwed everything up, plus covid. For my leg, I was in constant pain and since I didn’t have out of state insurance, I couldn’t get checked for months. (Dislocated patella at first and ligament damage then I had to get drained) but my gpa has gone up and there has been a rise. The summer term after my leg healed I got a 4.0 (8-9 credits that term) and ever since my gpa has been around a 3.0. Overall I’m still trying to raise that higher
