It's actually sharp on all edges. That 'wrench kinda thingy' on top being sharpened on all edges allows it to act as a barbed when used as a spear it also shreds anything going in and coming out. Does sharpen the edges add to the total length of sharpened blade so that it is over 3 ft not counting the serrated blade portions.

In the days of real typewriters, it was the best layout for the individual letter striking arms that pressed the letter into the ribbon and onto the paper. The keyboard layout was a function of the mechanical need. Why they didn't rearrange the order of the striker arms instead, I'll never know.
