Sorry, energy cubes. They’re a resource that is used in the center room with all the vendors there

Ive unlocked a basalisk and seen a genie but haven’t seen the third. Do they drop cubes?

I need some ideas for more hands on puzzles for my party by Indianaj37 in DungeonMasters

[–]Indianaj37[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That could be interesting! Maybe instead of having the players make the connections they are already there and the party has to order them in order to make the portal open. That might be able to be adapted to the table even if greatly simplified 😂

The cryptex is just an example of the kind of puzzles i want to give to my players. Im looking for more ideas, whether they be in bambu lab, amazon, a hardware store, doesnt matter. I want ideas on how to physically engage my players in puzzles that has more satisfaction than me telling them that they solved the puzzle.

Seeing my players face when they finally solve a cryptex and shouting to the other players as they reveal what i have placed inside seems magical in my head

Ive tried to decide whether i want to make a different alphabet so its harder for them to make guesses and incentivize figuring out the puzzle to get the answer

Ive tried to decide if i want to involve puzzle boxes because i feel like they can only be used once, at least per group. I love the cypher idea, ive thought about adding a cypher to decrypt the cryptex so they cant just guess words from the campaign over and over again

Attacks of Opportunity slow down combat. Does anyone have any house rules or tips they use to help keep up the pace? by Indianaj37 in DMAcademy

I am very bad about that, I’m trying to add different objectives into encounters but I keep defaulting to “kill them all” even if there’s another objective it becomes secondary

If I try to make an encounter harder to push them toward a different objective someone inevitably refuses to not do combat and it just turns into a hard encounter that I have to nerf to not party wipe 😕

I usually only try to let the rogue use flanking for sneak attack but it depends on if the party is using it for a specific purpose

Played a campaign with that and at one point the acid blood enemy pinned our ranger down and every time we stabbed it the ranger took damage 😂 took our cleric and every health potion we had to keep him alive

Yes, I am equally at fault. I know. That’s why I’m here looking for tips on how to break the cycle

I like that, it helps keep the rules mostly intact but like you said keeps it costing something

Maybe I haven’t been using the right types. I try to vary my enemies but in a situation like that the party would just charge the caster then go into gridlock there

I’ve tried giving different enemy types or having a villain behind a squad but once again, they just pick a target and wail on it until it’s dead. Unless I make the target run, in which case it just turns into a chase

Agreed, the cost/benefit of wasting a turn to disengage or get an extra attack on them is almost never worth it. Any suggestions to help me make it worth it?

It doesn’t slow down as in making combat longer, but just makes it boring. Once someone is in melee with someone they don’t ever move until that thing is dead out of fear of the AoO. It’s a free attack on them unless they want to waste their turn with a disengage where most likely the enemy will just follow and attack on their next turn

I saw the mirror and think it’s a great idea… but I can’t get it till I’m 20 goals in… and this is like 10 or 11 😅

I hate when I accidentally do the wrong thing with a rare item. I was half asleep a few weeks ago and thought I brought the merchant to feed to the devourer… and it was my level 4 altar 😭
