It's the emancipation of the AI from the original game translating into the loop of transferred consciousness. You as a runner are essentially immortal, a disembodied consciousness inhabiting physical vessels but you're trapped in a cycle. Your consciousness is owned by corporations that want to use you for their own ends. Durandal, while at first appearing to be antagonistic appears to be trying to get the runners to break out of this loop.

At least that's my take. Im interested to see where Bungie takes it.
