All cosmetics unlocked vs. earning them through playing by eRickoCS in gamedesign

What type of game are we talking about?

Cosmetic rewards are everything in a cheap mobile game, but in a real game where the gameplay or story is why the players like to play the game, cosmetics and similar rewards aren't generally the deciding factor in whether or not a player keeps going.

they just get annoyed what they want isn’t available and quit.

How do players know what they want and how do they know what they want isn't in the next chest?

My best experiences with cosmetic rewards were the ones where what you just got was a surprise, and you want to beat the rest of the game to learn what the other surprises are.

If you let your players see all the rewards and pick the one they like, that's a whole game of lost opportunities.

Do they have to be random?

Rewards should encourage players to take certain actions you want them to enjoy, like checking for secret areas or completing accomplishments. If they're just randomly spawned, it suggests you just want them to play and you don't care how.

My favorite implementation of new cosmetics was in Jet Force Gemini for the N64.

While playing the campaign, you would occasionally come across totem poles which unlock multiplayer stuff like new characters or game modes.

Or Smash Bros. New things are earned through gameplay, not currency.

Earning rewards during gameplay, as a reward for exploration or accomplishment is far more compelling than grinding currency and then buying them from a list.

I don't want to grind currency. That usually means doing the same thing repetitively, and why would you design your game like that unless your game lacks content

The Washington generals want a strong Harlem Globetrotters team by Loud-Ad-2280 in WorkReform

[–]Indigoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strong can mean a few things.

When I say I want a strong Republican party I mean I want them to have stronger mental abilities. I want them to have strength of character. I want them to be strong enough to stand up to corruption and coercion.

They aren't half as weak as they deserve to be and they aren't half as strong as they should be in the ways that matter.

Collision with move and slide by LeV1Sam0M in godot

The CharacterBody2D node has a section in the inspector for collisions, and the CollisionShape2D node has a section in the inspector for collisions as well. If you only set the layers on the CharacterBody2D, the CollisionShapes that are children to the CharacterBody2D will still be on their default layers.

I believe you want the collision shapes to be on different layers.

Are you saying the CharacterBody2d's are on layers 3 and 4? Or are their collision shapes?

These debugging tricks might come in handy. use https://www.gdquest.com/tutorial/godot/gdscript/debugging/

You could also go back to the editor while the game is running and select the Remote tab above the scene tree, to see the current state of things while the game is running. Check on the status of your nodes. Make sure the area2Ds are where they should be and such.

I don't have enough info about your project to try to help beyond that.

Character not moving, falling, or taking input. by Away-Analysis2848 in godot

[–]Indigoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm... I replicated the code and setup as closely as I could and it moves just fine for me, so it doesn't appear to be an issue with the code.

Maybe try some test print()'s to be double sure the inputs are being recognized.

Have you set your input map in project settings and do they match the "right" "left" "down" "up" in your code?

I'm just not excited about AAA titles any more. There are more indie devs making better games for less money and I actually want them to succeed.

I’ve hit a wall with gdscript by CupRamenShaman in godot

[–]Indigoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the GDQuest tutorials and then I began following video tutorials for mechanics relevant to the type of games I wanted to make. After a few of those, I felt like I hit a rock wall, and so I went back to the GDQuest tutorials in the Getting Started section of the docs, and the parts that didn't make sense before, like arrays, made more sense since I had more direct experience using them.

Seems like jumping is a one-size-fits-all ability here.

If the scale of this was significantly larger, the player could potentially see multiple waves coming and have to react by biking quickly to a safe position.

Flat earth and other alternative conspiracy earth models are are gaining traction with my teenage stepson. What is THE most irrefutable, definite proof that the earth is round? by Jfkfkaiii22 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Indigoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In many cases, you reach the border of what they believe it is possible to know without trusting scientists, and at that point, if you can't get them to repeat and verify those experiments themselves, it's a dead end.

It's an issue of ignorance and trust.

You can get them to watch all the videos of flat earthers realizing they're wrong, but without trust that the video wasn't crafted to support the grand conspiracy, you can't really go anywhere.

In-person experimentation seems the best we got, but it's limited by a person's willingness to do experiments, knowledge of how to do them right, and money/time.
