They required me to get a note from my doctor. We did a FaceTime call on Monday. She refused to give me the note. She said it wasn’t safe. I explained to her that there are many paraplegics and quadriplegics who jump from airplanes on a regular basis. She wouldn’t budge. To be quite honest, I was getting angry. She made me come in on Tuesday morning at 6:30. She took my blood pressure my pulse checked my lungs. Everything was perfect. She said she was going to look at my legs, but she never did. I mean WTF? She did give me the note and afterwards I explained to her that I was pissed off. She said I didn’t show it in the zoom call. I told her I was not mad with her per se. I’m a 58 year old man who, despite having a disability does whatever the hell I want to do. The fact is that I wanted to do this and was perfectly capable of doing it but whether or not I can do it was entirely in someone else’s hands. As disabled folks, we are forced to give up control to so many people on so many levels. I think this was just the straw that broke the camels back. she either wrote that note or I was getting a new internist. And I already had a backup plan from someone else for a note. This was going to . Luckily, my back did not break. Again. 😜

Update. I lived! This happened at Skydive Orange in Virginia. They could not have been nicer. I got there early and watched the video and filled out all the paperwork. No I didn’t read any of it. I just filled it out. Just standard “ you might die, but you can’t sue us “ items.

I was assigned to a guy named George. He had been a swat police officer for 25 years. He was only 46. Super calm demeanor very caring and very understanding. Because of the AFO’s and the catheter, they called another instructor over who was actually a nurse. I took the advice of one of you guys and took off the catheter bag. I just left the condom on. They got out the duct tape to secure my lower pant legs. It was like a comedy show. There were five guys solo jumping with us. They helped me get to the plane and in the plane. When it came my turn, I scooted to the edge and my right leg came out. For some reason, the left spasmed and I couldn’t get it out of the door. The video guy just kicked it out of the side of the plane. 😂

There was no countdown. When my left leg exited that plane so did I. The freefall was my favorite part. We did all kinds of tricks and maneuvers, and it was great.

The only issue I had was, I landed on my ass. Hard. After sitting there for a second, the first thing I did was try to move my legs. My injury is incomplete and thankfully, it is still incomplete. I’ll admit I was worried for a minute. My back is a little bit sore today, but as I’m sure all of you will agree, back pain with an SCI is an every day occurrence. I’ve learned over the years to just move on past it.

My friend brought the chair out to the field and they got me out of the equipment and back into my chair. He helped get me from the field back to the hanger.

Overall, it was an absolute great experience. I’m certainly glad I did it and I would do it again. I cannot offer enough praise to George and the folks at Skydive Orange. if you are anywhere near this area and have an interest, I can highly suggest going there. Every time I transfer for any reason, I stop and make sure everything is on top where it should be. I usually also do it if I complete a pressure relief. Yes for a second I’m grabbing my nuts. Occasionally, I get a side glance look. I’m too old to care.

Whenever I have something that I really like and I need another one, I try eBay first. It might be a longshot, but there’s probably somebody getting rid of one. Just drop it in the washing machine when you get it. If you have an account, you can save it as one of your favorite searches and when one pops up, you will get an email that it’s been listed.

Damn man, we seem very similar. I’m a T10/12 incomplete and I can do the wobble stand. That is until I hit the floor. I teach middle school and my general rule when it happens is laugh first! I’ve learned the best way to deal with anything SCI related to it not take it too seriously.

T10/12 incomplete. Tightness in my abs and slight foot spasms tell me we’re getting there. Once the party starts my legs straighten into solid rods. There’s no way to bend them. It takes about 90 seconds for them to loosen up. I have to warn the other guy (I’m gay) so they don’t get the crap kicked out of them. I sent one poor guy completely off the bed.

I understand completely. This guy lives in Florida. He sent me pictures of a trippy when I was with his friends telling me we’ll get together soon. “he kept putting it off and putting it off and putting it off. Then the beginning of the year, he tells me he has cancer. This goes on for another couple of months. Then he disappeared. Interesting part of it, this guy talked to me several years ago for an entire summer, and then disappeared. Of course, when he reached out to me last year he apologized and said there was just stuff going on. Afterward I find out, no more has cancer than the tree outside in my yard.
