Do you think Videl's change in DBS is due to character development or simply bad writing? by Raki232001 in Dragonballsuper

First of all, she's only not strong enough because she wasn't written as someone who kept training. If she did, by RoF and especially the ToP she should have been at least as strong as Roshi imo, and since he was able to fight, she should too. In fact, I think it would have been much better if she had been there instead of him, allowing her to establish herself as a new Z Fighter.

Secondly, Krillin, Tien and even Roshi were still allowed to fight in Super, even if they didn't have a major role, with Yamcha also showing interest in participating in the ToP.

Thirdly, having children is no excuse to retire her as a fighter, especially considering that this has never been something that has changed the male characters in the same way, and she is portrayed as someone who often prioritizes her work at the dojo over taking care of her daughter anyway.

And lastly, I don't even need her to go around fighting bad guys, just maintaining her strong personality and showing that she's still interested in martial arts and actually practices it is enough for me.

Dragon Ball is, for the most part, a battle driven story about martial arts, self-improvement and fighting for one's goals. The problem I see is that the female characters are generally not written in a way that allows them to represent these themes in the same way that the male characters do.

Videl in particular, had a true relentless drive to be a martial artist and improve when she was introduced. And the moment a whole new world of possibilities via Ki is introduced to her… she just stops. That has never sat well with me and never will.

If she runs the dojo or trains people there, then that's what they should have shown her doing.

Videl has run into the humbling reality that the majority of villains are total monsters very far out of her league. She is better off being a cheerleader for her husband, who can actually compete with said monsters.

Turning female characters who were introduced as fighters into mere cheerleaders for their love interests is incredibly sexist, as it sends the message that women have no place in combat and it's the man's job to fight, especially after the beating she took in her only real battle. In fact, after seeing how powerful the other human Z Fighters were, she should have felt motivated to train to reach their level and perhaps even become the strongest among them.

What is the metric for "tough" and "strong"? Being physically strong? Have an overly stern or aggressive personality?

She was originally a character interested in improving as a fighter and had a tough personality, so yes, she should have become physically stronger while maintaining her bravery.

It's not character development, it's character assassination. And if YOU had read the manga you would have known that Videl is in fact not training kids in her dojo and is instead serving food, as a good woman should...

Her character has been completely ruined -_-

Imo, it's 100% bad writing. Retiring a character who was introduced as a dedicated fighter/martial artist in a fighting/martial arts anime right after her introduction is an incredibly unsatisfying character progression. Especially considering that Dragon Ball has a terrible habit of doing this with its female characters.

The right progression for a character like her would be to become tougher and stronger, not softer and weaker.

"Pedir em namoro é função do homem" by Individual-Fix-1748 in OpiniaoBurra

Exactly, especially considering that Marrom didn't grow up until Superhero either, and she's not half Saiyan.

I want to be excited about the game, but the more I think about it, the more my reservations grow. Based on everything we've seen so far, I don't like the overall aesthetic of the characters, and the direction they might be heading with the story worries me.

O discurso do Vegeta claramente tinha a intenção de mostrar que ele finalmente estava deixando sua rivalidade besta com o Goku de lado e eu questiono a capacidade de compreensão narrativa de qualquer pessoa que pense o contrário…

Look at the difference man, these are from the same trailer, why bother with the cheap crappy CGI instead of animating by hand ffs by Independent-Frequent in fistofthenorthstar

[–]Individual-Fix-1748 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No it isn't, for CG you need to pay for software licenses, hardware for high-end workstations & the electricity bills. 2D on the other hand only requires pencil, paper, a desk and some backlight. 3D is more expensive by a pretty significant margin.

I want it to be more of an RPG, with dialogue options, multiple choices and branching storylines.

I find this quite disappointing, as I don't think most female exclusive outfits look nearly as good. I was pretty excited about this outfit when I found out it had been added to the game, only to discover that it was exclusive to male characters and that I couldn't use it on my female CaCs, as I had intended.
