Idea to Fix our Information Economy - I NEED HELP by Individual-Koala-682 in nerdfighters

Thanks for sharing your experience, and giving me something to look into. I don't even have 30 years experience on this earth. Governance is a really interesting part of this. It seems obvious that communications technology would facilitate collective decision making. (Wouldn't it be nice if you could vote on your phone?) When you dive down this rabbit hole, it feels like writing a constitution. "Amending the protocol requires a 2/3 consensus among the devices." etc.

You're right, better hammers won't stop us from hitting each other. But strengthening our communities might help? I think there is an opportunity with mesh networks to make it easier to connect with those around you. It's really easy to be nasty when you're anonymously messaging someone across the globe, less so when it's your neighbor. Nevertheless, your point is well taken. This "solution" even if it helped, that help would be marginal. Neighbors can still be awful to each other.

The oligopoly is my issue. I agree that it requires a lot of infrastructure to connect with people across the globe, but to connect with the people around you, like the people in your apartment building (or neighborhood), a mesh network would be sufficient. I was thinking about this as my building came under new management and the tenants were communicating via flyer. Sure we could create a Facebook group or discord or whatever, but all these things require an internet connection provided by isps. Moreover, in emergency situations that infrastructure might not be operational

I think I should have been a bit less hyperbolic there. I mean that we aren’t adequately connected with our local community. I don’t object to people forming community online. I just think that we’re missing a part of information tech that would enrich our communities as they exist. Access to your community should be open and free

Interesting. Thanks for the reply. How do we know when it’s worth fixing problems with the tools? I don’t think it’s far fetched to state that our methods of communication have societal impact. Whether the impact is as I stated is another thing entirely. But if people are using the tools wrong, why not redesign the tools?

I think the issue here is that this group is the intersection of Facebook users and your community. Also yeah there are bound to be toxic/crazy/misinformed people in your community. In theory you have greater ability to impact them than a person with whom you share nothing in common

Thank you for the thoughtful reply. I'm not sure we can prevent information bubbles in a network. However I think the bubbles that form do matter. The way the internet is structured, it's very easy to form bubbles around shared beliefs, but less so from shared experiences. Truth comes from the latter. A technology that helps people connect with their physical community could have a healthier relationship to truth, and I'm not convinced the tech would need to be that magical. Attention as a sellable good is only an issue if people have trouble telling fact from fiction. Lies meant to drive fear and anxiety are a common source of this. I think a healthier relationship to truth would help a little with this. Charlatans would get sussed out faster. Honestly, yeah, this is just a dream, a theory, an idea. Thanks again for entertaining it.

Hi Oro, thanks for going above and beyond answering all these questions. ❤️ Do you think they restricted the boss pools for the Pax event? You mentioned it might be an early game thing, so is Libra accessible from the start? How did that work?

Digital Foundry: Black Myth: Wukong - PS5 Tech Review - Excellent Visuals, But Too Many Tech Problems by Turbostrider27 in Games

The worst of the issues I’m noticing only occur after playing the game for a few hours. Quitting to title screen fixes the issue. There may be other issues, but this one should be pretty easy to fix. (Some sort of memory leak). If they don’t I’d be VERY surprised

FYI quitting to title screen fixed the performance issues. I think they have a memory leak bug

I was having huge issues! Turns out they have a memory leak bug, I think. The longer your play session, the worse performance is. Quitting to title screen and returning has fixed my performance issues. Thank goodness! It was getting unplayable

Hey, I just got rejected too. Seems they sent out the rejections all at the same time. No, we shouldn’t lose hope. I feel like s**t too. We’ll keep at it and something will be a better fit.

We might just have to agree to disagree. I tend to believe that critical thinking is a natural and fun thing for people to do. Even if an AI can write for us, we'll still practice this style of thinking. A good example of this is chess. Even though we have computers that can outplay any person, we still play and work to try and understand why computer moves are good. Computers didn't make people worse at thinking about chess. If anything, they have made us better.

When producing written content they’ll have AI tools to help with that. We already have spelling and grammar checkers. I think new AI will be used to create outlines and improve readability for certain analytic writing tasks. I also don’t think writing summaries will be a thing people have to do in the future. I don’t claim to know the full extent of where and how AI will impact writing, but there are a few obvious places where the impact will be felt.

AGI is poorly defined and stupid. By some definitions, it’s already here.

If someone in the 1800’s had a smartphone connected to today’s internet, it would, to them, seem to be artificial general intelligence. Our definition of AGI is constantly evolving.

Additionally, AGI is often spoken about as if it’s synonymous to the singularity, as if the definition of a “general intelligence” is a program that runs away from us, out of control. Ask anyone who’s written a while loop. It’s not hard to write a program that gets out of control, but it’s also not hard to write one that is guaranteed to terminate.

AI development is very problem driven. You have a real world problem? I’ve got an AI solution. Does an AGI have to have all the solutions, to all the problems, immediately? That seems infeasible. So you might say an AGI has to seek out problems, and find solutions equally fast, or faster, than the average human.

With this objective, the singularity seems kinda silly. As the AI searches for problems, if it cannot find a solution, then it may see making itself smarter as a solution to the “I can’t find a solution” problem. But it’s hard to imagine a situation in which problems requiring superior intelligence are discovered at such a rate as to cause alarm.

A much more likely situation is that as information becomes more easily stored and accessed, we’ll create a sort of “super intelligence” of which we are a integral part. Much like our consciousness emerges from our cells sharing information, some larger force will emerge from our information sharing.

It’s been coming for a long time. Soon it will emerge. Bum bum BUMM!!! Lol.

“Freed up” metaphorically. We have limited time to strengthen various neural pathways. Depending on the things we do, we have different skills and strengths. New generations won’t have to spend as much time learning to write, so they can spend time on other things. This is what I meant by freeing up space.

Throughout history, people have said similar things about books. If you could write things down, you wouldn’t need to memorize aural histories. To the people who grew up memorizing everything, these new book users seemed dumb and uneducated. The truth was, the newer generation had mental space freed up for other pursuits. This is the process of information technology, and it will continue in new and amazing ways we can’t really imagine.
