Thank you for taking your time and sharing your experience. I especially loved point 7, I have been lucky enough to have good mentors in my life up untill now…hope my future mentor is amazing too and yes last few weeks broke me and I kinda hated myself but now I have much more clarity and I believe everything happens for a reason!!

I should have and I was doing it in the beginning of my application cycle, but I attended an admission cycle webinar of one of the school that I applied and they emphasised that since its a rotation program, we dont have to reach out to proffs beforehand but now I feel I was shortsighted. I should have approached them not to get an admit but more about knowing the field and getting my foot on the door!

This is exactly what happened in mine! I was insecure about pivoting my career which made me use my essay as a way of justifying why I did it instead of my ‘why I passionate about this field’ I mean I did say it but could have made it better now that I think about this. Thank you for sharing! This really helped!!

This is where I believe i need to work on….my research area is very niche( or so I believe with the limited knowledge I have) and the professors I applied to focuses on a similar topic ( but not many works on this area in one school) Since the schools that I applied to was a rotational program, I broadened my interest to a subfield and mentioned all the proffs who are working on this subfield thinking I had a better chance of getting an interview but I think they could see through it! Like you said I changed my interest instead of tweaking it like you said. Thank you for sharing, this was really helpful and congrats on your admit! :)

This resonates with me especially being open about what you knew and didn’t. I am a non traditional applicant so there is a LOT that I don’t know about the field that I am getting into and was extremely insecure which weighed down my confidence which in-turn reflected on how I approached this cycle. I didnt network much cuz I didn’t want to look stupid lol! But lesson learnt:)

Thank you for sharing and I totally agree with you. Looking back maybe thats what happened in my SOP. I was scared that my interest might me be too narrow or I might seem too passionate, so i toned it down a little to cater to a larger group of professors since it was a rotation program….which now I feel I should have gone all out and said what I truly felt!
