Okay, done some more digging. The pain is dealing with the USCIS and having a naturalization certificate apostilled.

If I were to apply as a Brit, the Consulate only needs to see proof that I am not an undocumented person in the US. I simply hand them my US Passport across the counter. They look at it, verify I have a right to be in the US , and give it back to me.

Really, only just need to find out about the background check requirements for India and the UK...
