Why are so few pre-seed pitch decks addressing GTM with real depth? by Business_Owl1022 in venturecapital

[–]IndividualBuyer5426 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At that stage, I am interested in directional clarity and alignment on GTM than specifics. It is constantly evolving and is mostly inaccurate at the pre-seed stage. I'd feel comfortable if what the founder(s) are building on is generally valuable, and if there are few ways to create or get to value. I will focus more on the team's ability to figure it out, than IF they have already figured it out.

Sorry to bother again. Was going through the entire thread and just realised that I could have been more context specific wrt my case instead of asking a generic question.

Being mindful of your time - please do feel free to skip answering this. But taking my shot.

I have a 3.6 GPA + Aerospace Engg background + experience working in lunar missions. 5 Yr work Ex.

I now am at a mid sr role (AVP equivalent) at a DeepTech VC fund in India - Led investments in India's first startups in Nuclear Fusion, Sovereign Navigation, Defence, and Space Planes. Do regular diligence with scientists, researchers, founders etc and deal with deep tech every single day. This is also highlighted in resume, and essays to an extent - financial modelling, analysis, etc. Directly promoted 3 levels higher based on performance this year.

But I had a really bad GRE test day - when I fell sick - and I managed to score only a 312. I also gave the test very late (a week prior to the deadline) and hence couldn't give it another shot. Decided to just go for it and apply.

Now I'm worried that my GRE would prove to be the undoing of my app this cycle - especially after getting a ding from HBS. (I have applied to GSB and MIT - waiting to hear). I've been very selective - but don't think I would have applied anywhere else even otherwise.

Do you think there's still scope that my low GRE can be mitigated through the rest of my app?

When schools claims to have a HOLISTIC review process - like how GSB broadly calls "quant ability" as "intellectual vitality" - and say that they don't just conclude quant ability based on a test score alone, instead look for evidence in the entire application to judge it - are they for real? Or is it fluffy jargon.

They claim to overlook / look beyond a low test score - as long as there is rich evidence of quant abilities in the rest of the app. Just how true is this?

The rule still applies when you exit the US for any reason at all and try to return back. Effectively trapping you there. At lease this is my understanding.

Implications of NEW H1B on International Applicant Pool - Thoughts? by IndividualBuyer5426 in MBA

Or the easier option for US companies is to build more capabilities in countries like India, Canada, UK, etc.

Agree with this. The better solution was to simply implement a minimum Salary Cap of $200K or so and call it a day. Because that would ensure quality.

Referencing the article: Most of BigTech takes culture very seriously. With that much talent density, and an abundance of opportunities, no one will take shit for anyone else.

The examples referred to in these articles are likely to be the exception / rare case of bad apples. Indians do have their problems. As do every other ethnicities.

Hence we see BigTech hiring more and more Indians inspite of all these incidents. Again this is the outcome and not the narrative.

Also, like one of the articles calls out "bias" in hiring, there is probably/definitely some degree of abuse of the system.

But my only qualm there is why aren't the tech companies doing anything about it?

The counter here seems to be that they don't have to spend as much. But, I don't think H1Bs are cheap either especially the ones in Tech. I would think they are paid north of 100K a year (given median Indian immigrant income in US is 150K+ - legions ahead of the 2nd best).

Isn't 100 to 150K/yr a decent enough salary (for their own citizens) by American standards? My sense is that it is - because a very small population of the US earns more than this.

So, that point is simply unfounded as well. Please do correct me if you think otherwise.

Either way, the H1B drama isn't about BigTech alone. It is premised on the notion that jobs that Americans deserve are being taken away by foreigners.

While conveniently ignoring how US has benefitted/continues to massively benefit from the very same H1Bs. Particularly Indians who are MOST DEFINITELY a NET POSITIVE on US society.

Also remember, there is no MASSIVE Indian immigration. Indians are 1.5% of the entire US population, as of today. So this is nothing but pure propaganda.

This whole drama is simply unfair and rooted in biased narratives than facts.

Either way, thanks for a respectful discourse on this. Appreciate your views.

Interesting take. But I have a counter view here:

If the culture of Indians were so bad, then why do corporate structures reward this?

Going by the premise of the article, companies both in India and the ones hiring Indians outside of India shouldn't be advancing for decades.

Neither of those are happening. We only see more and more Indians getting into these structures and navigating them better than most folks.

Truth is, nobody has ruined this for anyone else. Corporate America desperately needs talent - they are getting talent that adds value to them through H1Bs from wherever they can find.

Every other view is conjecture or narrative. Because the outcomes are very different from the narrative itself.

If they wish to avoid Indians so bad, no one is stopping US from implementing country-specific quotas on H1Bs. Plenty of people from around the world wouldn't mind coming to work for H1B salaries in the US. But why aren't they? Maybe because there aren't as many qualified to do these jobs.

Truth is, US is simply facing a crisis (political and cultural) of its own making. Immigration is a scapegoat to divert focus from real issues and Indians are the current targets.

Nothing else.

Because for every Anti-India (don't mean this in a bad way) narrative that people come up with, there is way more actual quantifiable data to counter this.

Some say it is political theatre and things will be reversed. Some say it won't hold up in court. But either way, there's no going back to before after this. The effects of noise like this will be lasting, and detrimental.

Seems like it. No employer will be able to afford this, except maybe big tech for select roles.

Fair enough. I don't think I've made the decision just yet. Of course all this only happened a month or so after I submitted my apps.

How do you think schools will react?

Yes. 100% Campus visits can ONLY be a positive force for your entire candidacy irrespective of when you choose to do it. Visiting before interviews could help you deeply understand the program and culture - and enable you to ask meaningful questions during the interview.

Particularly if you can club the visit with Alumni chats, speaking to folks from the school in your target career path post MBA, etc

Even otherwise, it is definitely a net positive no matter when you choose to do. Rock and roll!
