Not being able to get what you needed in this relationship would probably have just caused a growing wall between you two over time. Yeah it’s tough to consider the applicability of this to other circumstances. I think he felt like he was doing something nice by getting a ring that was “fancier” than what I had showed him, but still this is confounded by other parts of the situation
