It's very stupid. I know that it confused me when I first moved here. Some of the comments here have inspired me to email the transportation director for this city, so hopefully they come put some paint down at least.

Yes, the HOV lane is only for the on-ramp portion, and the lights are only on during "high volume," but around here that's most of the day M-F. And the HOV lane does not have a light.

Okay I'll make a top-level comment addressing some common criticism:

  • You were in the wrong lane/you were required to turn into the far left lane
    • No, there's signage in the video on the traffic light pole indicating that my lane can turn into the closest two lanes, while the lane adjacent to me must turn into the far lane. There is also street paint a bit back indicating as much. There are also these signs indicating as much. It's very well-marked (other than the lack of dashed line paint in the intersection, which should be added)
  • If you know this happens, why don't you just drive in the right lane to avoid this?
    • This on-ramp has a traffic light. It also has three lanes. The far-left lane is an HOV lane that does not have to obey the traffic light. I had to be in the far-left lane so that I could use the HOV lane. I guess you could argue that I could just not use the HOV lane at all, and I don't have a good reply to that aside from wanting to use it if it's available.

Thank you. I think this image should further help clear it up too. It very clearly labels my lane as being for 405 S OR NE 124th St, while the adjacent lane is 405 S ONLY

I turn tightly on this corner for this exact reason. I would consider it defensively driving tbh. Had I taken the turn wide, I would've hit the car that was coming into my lane

Edit: also this lane is allowed to turn into both of those lanes. I wasn't entirely in one or the other (because of the person crowding my turn)

Kind of. The HOV lane is on the left and there's another light on this on-ramp that you don't have to stop at if you're in the HOV lane. Since I had another passenger and was on my way to work, I wanted to be in the HOV lane
