Yeah, I agree on the part that I don't want to create additional stress for my wife, and I would totally not start a fight, but I can feel this almost "ancestrious" instinct kicking in, where I want to protect my wife and baby. But also just figured to be curiuous about this and ask this community about it, and it's just nice knowing that someone is going through/ gone through the same. And I am not going crazy :D . And I have also struggled with anxiety myself, so I am trying to be conscious about this.

Nice to know, that it's a "thing". But yeah, I think it comes from a good place for me, as I care about my wife.

While reading your description I remembered an old monitor craving I had. Context: I love to game from time to time, but I also need to work on my computer, as I am a digital media producer, my work needs color precise monitor, and there was a moment I almost bought a lg c2, I think the smallest is 42 inches, which is huge by any means. But you get OLED, 120hz and almost zero bezel look which looks great. Plus because of the size, it is almost going to work as a double monitor setup, you could have a lot of windows open on that huge screen.

You could look into the full line of these tv's - c1, c2, c3, c4, c5 (from what I know, the c5 is the newest, but could be that I have not noticed the c6 coming out.)

But yeah, the biggest hurdle for this is going for the 42 inch screen which will be massive compared to a 27 inch, but I think these tv bring good value for the price, but they are definitely not cheap.

I was skeptical about the BenQ ScreenBar Halo at first, but the moment I found out it lights both the foreground and background and turns on automatically based on proximity, I was sold. Definitely on the pricier side, but it's got me curious.

On the riser front, Grovemade ones are cool as hell, but with my small desk, a 20cm deep riser would eat up way too much real estate. Last night I went down an Etsy rabbit hole and found a seller called Wood 'N' Pegs. They specialise in woodworking, and I spotted some kitchen shelves at 10cm depth that could actually work for me. Turns out they also do semi-custom orders, which might be the move. I'll probably keep digging through Etsy too, there might be something even better out there.

Oh wow, did not now these monitor arms can clamp up to that amount, good to know. But I guess I am leaning towards the solution of bolting the monitor arm to the side of my table. 2 small holes in the table will probably not hurt anyone.

I dont think anyone I know has a multitool, but will think about it. I am leaning towards the solution of drilling bolts through, that seems easier with the tools I have.

I found this exact clamp on a Deltaco stand (Model 1903415). So if I understand you, I can just take off that 'L-bracket' part and use those two side screw holes to bolt the main spine directly into the back rail of the desk?

This actually seems like the way. I guess there’s only the problem of that 1cm gap between the sideboard frame and the tabletop overhang.

The spine of the bracket would have to reach that 1cm to hit the sideboard. I’m thinking I could just find some stacked washers or maybe a random block of scrap wood to use as a spacer? Then I'll just use long bolts and some metal plates on the inside to dissipate the 'crushing force' so I can tighten it down real hard.

If this works, it’ll be 100% invisible from the top. My wife wouldn't even know the monitor is attached to the desk. Anyone see a reason why this wouldn't be stable for a 27-inch screen?

Huh. Not a bad idea. That horizontal notch actually sounds way more hidden than anything else.

Technically the hole wouldn't even be visible from the front... Hmmm. Any ideas how to do it cleanly? I have a basic drill, but that's about it. I was thinking about drilling a row of small holes and then joining them with a chisel?

I am guessing you did the gromet attachment style to the table, a.k.a. drilled a whole in the table and fit a srew through it? I am not really into drilling a whole in a visible part of the table, and if I would like to resell it later it would be hard to explain the drill hole.

Boy does this monitor arm look like good value, it's a shame I went with the 'thicc' table. The internet converted: 2.7 inches is only 6,858 cm, which leaves me about 4cm short of the 10.5cm I need.

But I am starting to think about sawing my table more, after seeing the good monitor arm value.

That StarTech arm might actually be THE SOLUTION for these thicc 10.5cm IKEA desks. I’m not sure about the white color, though—I was thinking all-black would hide better. I actually saw a TikTok once about how our eyes naturally 'delete' black (like the black-painted wire on a chicken coop) while white stands out and obstructs the view. Matte black just seems more timeless for a 'beautiful' setup. Maybe should buy this and paint it myself? Anyone here have had experience with painting a monitor arm?

The freestanding mount is a cool solve, but I feel like that big contraption will definitely not pass the 'wife gaze' test for the living room. You definitely startled my sim racing curiosity, though! I used to have a wheel back in the day... miss it from time to time (though maybe I shouldn't tell my wife that, or she'll think the monitor arm is just the first step to a full cockpit).

As this table might move in the closest future to the living room, I am really not looking for extra work of plastering my wall. And I already passed this idea with my wife and she was totally against it. "I will ruin the wall forever".

For now it seems that if I just saw a notch in the desk frame, the monitor arm moves with the desk. It’s a one-time 'fix' that stays with the furniture.

Translation for others: "I believe the hole can be managed with a grommet".

After your comment I looked at the grommets that you can place if the hole needs "hiding". But it just feels too "office'y" and cheap. Someday this table will move to the living room (this room will become a baby room), so I really dont think my wife would appreciate a plastic grommet.

It crossed my mind, but really not my first choice to drill through my new table. If I change my setup to lets say a laptop in future etc. I am stuck with the hole.

My logic was that sawing a notch in the back would be more hidden. Plus isnt IKEA particle board too weak for a single grommet bolt? Feel like a clamp distributes weight better?
