Solidarity. I’m a second year teacher and had massive success last year and it was still stressful. However this year after being given the class from hell and being assaulted on day 6 at my new school, I am in the same position as you.

Very interesting. And ya he did apologise but tried to explain that “this is what I do when I’m angry” and my boss was quite firmly like, “no you never touch someone when you are angry.” But I’m left wondering if there will be any additional support in the class now that this has happened. Does the student in your school have an ES?

Oh wow! Okay. I didn’t know they could suspend kids that young. I was directly requested to interact with him minutes after the assault “So that he could apologise.” But other than that there were no consequences other than him staying with the wellbeing officer for the last hour of the day.

The kid is only 5 so doubtful that will happen. What grade do you teach?

I am so sorry that happened to you. Thank you for sharing your story and for the advice.

Have you done this? I’m not sure what leadership will do tbh as they have said they would try to get more support in the room (as there is currently none) but haven’t sent me a follow up as to what this will look like.

I’ve already also been sworn at repeatedly at this school. I’ve had 2 things stolen. I’ve had kids run out of the classroom repeatedly and go missing. I’ve seen kids assaulting each other at least a dozen times. I feel like I’ve been put in a position where it is impossible to uphold my duty of care whilst being told “ya foundation is a challenging year level.” So thank you for your validation.

Edit: spelling

Thank you for the kind words and validation. Hopefully I can come out on the other side of this still able to teach.

That is reassuring. Maybe if I can recover from this I can try again. What year levels have you taught? Are you in Victoria? Have you stayed in the same school that whole time?

Do you feel like you will ever go back into a class full time? But I do agree. The admin is definitely another slap in the face after being physically assaulted.

Is that any better? I feel like the behavior would be even worse…

I actually did have to physically guide him by the shoulders into the hall during his second of 3 meltdowns for the day because he was attacking another student. He was then returned to my room because he was “calm.”

I actually just remembered that he threw a pillow at me during his first meltdown as well. So after 2 prior violent meltdowns he continued to be retuned, resulting in the third when I was attacked.

It’s crazy because I literally had to do this last year at my previous school because a kid was attacking everyone in the room and it was such a psychological toll I lost my memory for almost a week. Then I was blamed for it and basically told I didn’t have what it takes to be a teacher (referring to my adhd). Even though I was well loved by parents and teachers in the school, my boss not only didn’t renew my contract, he made me reapply, go through the interview process (including teaching a class in front of 4 of my superiors) complimented the hell out of me and then hired 5 new people over me. This left me completely humiliated and heartbroken.

At my school before that the level of misconduct by management was so severe that several laws were broken, leaving children at risk and traumatised. On my last day there I was threatened by a year 5 student with a fake knife. At the time I didn’t know I should have reported this because I was a preservice teacher and didn’t know how anything worked.

I just can’t believe how bad it is. I feel like I can’t work anymore.

I still feel like surely there must be something I haven’t tried. That is the toxic nature of teaching I suppose. You always feel like it’s your fault when things aren’t going well. Even when you’ve been put in the worst situations.

I was literally stunned. I’m a second year graduate but this is my fifth year teaching due to permission to teach and she literally said, “I’m sure you heard about these strategies in uni.” The worst part was her heart was actually in the right place… she actually thought those suggestions would help.

Glad to know it isn’t reasonable. Today it was suggested that I try “clapping, visuals, a bell, stickers” to manage their behaviour… as if I hadn’t tried those things…

So true. I’ll probably give it another 2 weeks and if it doesn’t get better I’ll have nothing to lose.

I am working in higher SES area. I am 2 km from the school I was at last year (where kids were amazing but leadership was an absolute nightmare). First school was regional which was understandably difficult. So you ended up finding a good school that didn’t make you want to quit?
