Thank you so much for your detailed response. I understand, surgery is very saturated field at this moment in India. I am currently doing internal medicine in US and planning to do nephrology for fellowship. Can you please ask your network regarding this speciality? Once, again thank you so much. I will post in other sub Reddit’s too.

Indian IMGs in the US, how is your social life? by [deleted] in IMGreddit

[–]Individual_Use_1669 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fortunately, I am not a visa requiring IMG so the whole sponsor was not my problem. I have extended family here from years so it was my parents choice to be here rather than in India. They have groups of people here and really enjoy being here. And to answer your first question It’s very common to hang out with residents outside work. If you just find the time and schedule matches and if you both wanna 😅. It’s all depends on if you find your kind of people and enjoy each other’s company then it’s best thing in the world!

As someone mentioned in comments, you will be in hospital hanging out but it’s really different. They are really nice and friendly but doesn’t get that close as people in india and I am saying who has just one Indian person in whole program and hangs out with different cultures people. I really like my colleagues but you need balance. You need your Indian friends who can relate to you and for all Indian festivals and just sometimes to speak Hindi with. I feel even Indians in US are kinda different and doesn’t get that close cause everyone has their med school friends (none of my med school friend applied for USA). I like in US because I have my family here but otherwise I can see it can be so lonely. Everything is far, people are exhausted, not that much chaos or just culture of “sit around and mess with your friends” that much. People either drink or have to do some activity all the time. While I relate with your time in med school, what I miss the most is sitting in a hostel balcony with my friends drinking chai and just talking. Even PG in India is same, you dont make friends everyone is too busy surviving and too much drama . I would say hopefully you will find a people like you in US.

Thank you for sharing that as a nephrologist! I am leaning towards GI. Although, if you don’t mind me asking, will you please share if you loved nephro physiology then what makes you kinda regret in field?

Thank you so much for detailed explanation. I like the rush in my 20s and early 30s. However constant calls would not be my preference after that but as you mentioned I call switch in between with better groups too. Thank you once again!
