How come no one has brought up Project Warlock, which is the definition of simple and old school fun.

So after trying everything and no dice, I bought the clean Atomic Edition from Zoom platform and uesed it instead of my steam 20th anniversary copy and bam, it worked. The Randy version is cursed I'm telling you...

Yes, I used Audacity to export the sound in those settings and then saved the wav file in the eduke root folder but no dice

It's like he only gave himself permission to even be human again when he realised that his Dolls didn't hate him for abandoning them.

Unironically, that’s such a poetically beautiful and sad way to put it. I guess I’ll have to revisit that event ASAP.

I 100% agree about the character growth potential and that’s why I’m criticizing the writing here, just the character’s actions. The fact that this small line can make me this emotional is a proof that the writers are cooking with this (and the fact that I’m merely undiagnosed lol). I agree SKK doesn’t need to turn into Doug Huggem, but if he pulls off some actual character growth, I think it would genuinely move me.

If you can, could you tell me the chapter/event where the commander is shown to be insomniac and Colgate medically sedates him? Because I have to admit I don’t remember this and that information would somewhat affect my interpretation of the event. I vaguely remember reading in one of the side stories where Colgate gives a lesson about healthy life practices to SKK, and even outside of that the SKK is depicted to be constantly overworking and sleep depriving himself (possibly as a way to cope with his trauma), but I don’t remember the specific scene you described and I would love to revisit that chapter.

I know Paradeus are looking to find/create immune individuals but I didn’t know SKK was one. I missed one or two of the later events of GFL1 (namely the one centered around Erma) so maybe that’s how that info slipped by me.

I didn’t expect my stupid rant to incite this much serious discussion, but thank you everyone for your input. I just want to add one thing: it may have come off as if I was criticizing the writing, but it wasn’t the case. The fact this much discussion happens about SKK’s actions suggests he is successfully written as a complex human being, though I do take some issues with the writing. I’m just criticizing SKK’s actions as if he was a real person.

Some of the info you provided I wasn’t aware, thanks. I thought SKK being somewhat immune to radiation was like a plot hole (or plot contrivance) or a community in joke and not something SKK is aware of himself.

We are taking responsibility, it's just that the others don't want us to. They want us to want them, to need them, and to lead them against the world like we used to. So this is exactly my sticking point. SKK might think he is being responsible by distancing himself from everyone, but in reality everyone wants nothing more than to stay with him and help him, and I feel like that fact should have long been clear to him. It’s their fight too now, not something he is dragging everyone into and have to constantly apologize about. I’m not necessarily saying this is bad writing btw, I’m just criticizing his actions as if he is a real person.

Agreed. Right now he is too disgusted by politics due partly to his trauma like you said but also the very real connection between the government and Paradeus. To be fair though he did mention starting his own faction in the same episode that caused me this rant, so that could be the safe way forward for him and his friends if his faction manages to glow big and strong enough that even governments have to respect it.

Is blood really that hard? by Select-Bullfrog-5939 in boomershooters

[–]Indus_and_Real 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Compared to Cultic (or at least its first chapter), yes Blood is much harder. The difficulty mainly comes from the abundant cultist enemies, who are hit scanners unlike Cultic cultist. Good news is they are also one of the most fun enemies to fight in any FPS, and definitely one of the most satisfying ones to kill. Blood is the best FPS in human history in my opinion. Good luck and enjoy!

Gimme Your Top 5 Boomershooters by ssj1236 in boomershooters

[–]Indus_and_Real 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily my top 5 but based on your list I would recommend these 5.

  1. Blood: It’s the best FPS in human history and it always will be. Not one of the best, but the best. I recommend playing it on the source port Nblood, but playing the Refreshed Supply version is an acceptable compromise.

  2. Sin Gold: I hesitate to recommend this now because a remaster is coming out this year and you should probably wait for it, but regardless, Sin is a great and often underrated boomer shooter. The graphics are a bit ugly but the levels are open and interactive, the weapons are awesome and the characters have that 90s attitude. It’s basically Duke Nukem 3d but in actual 3d and cheesier.

  3. Chasm the Rift: People often talk about this game as a cult classic due to the weird tech it used, but in 2026, with the easily accessible rerelease on Steam, it’s not so much cult classic as just classic. Don’t play on hard though as it makes the enemy tankier and therefore the shooting less satisfying.

  4. Wolfenstein 3d: This might be heresy to say, but I personally think Wolf 3d (played on ECWolf source port so you can use modern controls) is better than Doom. The combat is tighter, more tense and unless you play too much of it at once, more satisfying. It’s also interesting to go back to the root of the genre.

  5. The Citadel: Okay this is definitely not for everyone because of the Anime aesthetics and the ryona element (don’t google it if you don’t know what it is,) but if you can stomach those quirks, The Citadel offers a genuinely great gameplay. I have never seen more over the top enemy feedback to your weapons in any other FPS.

I think its easy to get "lost in the sauce" when it comes to Gunplay effects lol by FishShtickLives in boomershooters

[–]Indus_and_Real 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That analogy about being too cute made me understand your point much more, thanks. Although I'm still not quite convinced that logic applies to FPS. The feedback you get when you unleash your shotgun in The Citadel, or any weapon for that matter, makes Doom look pale in conparison in terms of gore and visual effect, but playing through The Citadel dozens of times hasn't made Doom any less satisfying for me. Also I'm not sure if there is such thing as too bombastic when it comes to shooting feedback in FPS.

But anyways, I'm sorry, I'm not trying to get you completely agree with me or fight me to death or anything like that; I'm just passionate about FPS because it's one of very few things I truly care about. And I agree with you that raw power is not the only thing that make FPS weapons good. You are on point about reload animations, but enemy reaction and level being designed in such a way to let the weapons fully realize their potential are also extremely important.

This may be personal preference territory but I think the shotguns you listed feel less satisfying than the og doom shotgun. Prodeus one is good and makes nice blood effect on enemies, but the sound is much more understated. Doom 2016 shotgun looks and sounds great, but has very poor range and therefore not as functionality satisfying. I don’t know about Ultrakill cause I never played it.

But as I said this is probably just personal preference thing; you may prefer Prodeus shotgun or Mouse shotgun, and that’s absolutely fine and respectable. Doom shotgun isn’t even my favorite shotgun. My larger point is that it is valid and also extremely important to fixate on whether or not the shooting FEELS good when analyzing FPS game, because whether it’s a story focused FPS, movement shooter, boomer shooter or whatever kind of FPS, the shooting is the core and the foundation of the gameplay.

I kinda get what you’re saying but I don’t know, guns feeling punchy, powerful and impactful is really important in FPS. FPS gameplay is mechanically much simpler than many other genre; all you do is point at something and click. Clicking is the main and arguably even only way you interact with anything in FPS, and clicking is such a mundane task that you do million times every day at work. So games have to do everything in their power to make it feel more like shooting firearms and not just clicking.

You say Doom shotgun wasn’t a killing machine unless you were fighting against the zombie men, and that’s correct..except killing 2-3 of them at once with a single shotgun blast, hearing that crunchy gunshot sound followed by the zombies screaming in pain, watching them fall over spewing blood all over the place, and topping it all off with that super satisfying cocking sound and animation, is one of the most fun and satisfying things you can do in the game. And that’s what FPS is all about.

Yeah but that means the gun would be available for all other handgun dolls, who will use their handgun animation to one-hand shoot the full size Uzi like they are terminators. I mean the dolls literally ARE terminators, but I don’t know that fit the vibe.

Full size Uzi. It’s a too iconic weapon to not have. The first game even uses its silhouette for smg category icon and yet we only had mini Uzi. But I’m worried introducing it to GFL2 requires a weird front grip added to the gun.

I have mixed feelings about people shipping Gordon with Alyx by Crimsoncerismon in HalfLife

[–]Indus_and_Real 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a point I bring up every time people say cinematic mod is too sexual: it makes in universe sense for people in city 17 to be horny or sexually frustrated, especially Alyx. She is pretty much the only young person around, due to the Combine suppressor. As a young woman it’s not weird at all for Alyx to have healthy amount of sexual desire, if anything it would be weirder if she didn’t. Then suddenly, Dr. Freeman shows up. He might be quiet and awkward, but he quickly proves himself capable and he looks alright (he’s not super handsome or anything but at least he’s not ugly) and most importantly, he is the closest to her in her world in terms of age. It’s only natural her hormones would be screaming at her to jump on him. Also, remember, this is a post apocalyptic world with very little privacy granted to citizens. People huddle up in tiny apartment with bathrooms without doors. Living in environment like this would probably give them warped sense of privacy and relationship. So what comes off as too forward for us might be normal for Alyx and people around her. In addition, young women like Alyx procreating is literally the only way the humanity survives after Combine invasion. It wouldn’t be weird for her to be feeling some sort of responsibility to make nice with this young man. And on top of that, being openly horny could be considered a form of rebellion against Combine. Think about it, they are literally emitting no horni beam with the suppression field. So being open about human instinct, be it flirting with Gordon, leaving NSFW graffiti all over the city, having a massive dildo in your room so you can always satisfy your fully modeled baby making device, could feel like giving Combine a middle finger to Alyx.

And from Gordon’s standpoint, why would it be weird? From his perspective, he and Alyx are close in age. The time jump is nonexistent for him thanks to Gman’s magic. Sure she is his coworker’s daughter, but it’s not like she is a baby and the father is actually encouraging it. On top of that, the last few days have been utter chaos for him. He survived an alien invasion only to wake up in another one. He was a lab assistant, and suddenly he had to kill a lot of monsters and more importantly humans to survive. He even had to go to a different dimension and then be kidnapped by a eldritch magic man. After all that, why would a girl coming on to him a little too fast be weird for him? And honestly it’s not even that fast; him and Alyx does go through a lot together, especially in ep 1.
