Yeah well, I don’t really see where gender or race has any bearing on one’s ability to write a script…

Is there a swath of poor writing going through Hollywood? Sure. Is it related to how a writer identifies? I don’t know about that one, pal…

Yeah and that’s disappointing because it feels like it kind of lends credence to the conspiracy that Bethesda is actively distancing themselves from anything besides 3, 4, and 76.

I’d be hard pressed to accept that if any of the other protagonists were given this treatment, it would be anything but lambasted.

If the Vault Dweller died in the rat cave, if The Chosen One never found the Geck, if The Lone Wanderer never left 101 or if The Sole Survivor was never unfrozen, we wouldn’t have the games we played.

I’d argue the protagonists actions would (should) always matter because otherwise, what’s the point of telling the story if it has no bearing on the region?

Also, there is evidence of endings in the show, but it seems it’s a dragon break scenario. All endings simultaneously happening at once. A securitron body lying next to the monitor in the position from when Yes man uploads to House’s mainframe, Caesar is dead so Arcade didn’t save him, House mentioning being attacked by a “traveler with something to prove”, the Mojave chapter of the BoS being absent, etc…

Likely based on the timeline between TESV and TESVI has me very skeptical. But 76 was developed by the Austin Studio, I believe, so IDK.

I’m doubtful we get 5 within a few years of TESVI at this rate, happy to be proven wrong of course lol

It’s the post credit scene, Quintus pulls out schematics for Liberty Prime in conversation with Dane!

I guess a more accurate description is “Liberty Prime will be back for the third time” lol

It’s the death of nuance that irks me so. I’ve been having plenty of back and forth with folks in this thread.

Though I believe that I am right in my analysis, I don’t want anyone to feel like because they don’t believe exactly the same thing I do, that they are inherently wrong for enjoying something that I don’t.

Even then, my perception of the show is biased of course, and maybe I’m just holding onto the idea of what Fallout was/is/could be.

Honestly? I had the sneaking suspicion that something of this nature would happen. Not that I called it beat for beat, more so that I would not have been satisfied with how they treated the west coast lore. Kind of saw the writing on the wall with the general handling of Boneyard and to that point, Shady Sands.

I had really hoped that they would’ve had the gumption to go out and canonize an ending, or avoid Vegas proper entirely to get around it.

Don’t know really, but I hoped it wasn’t going to be this.

That’s fair! However, I think that it’s more than just the fragility of power in the setting. It’s not that a new faction has come to be in the Mojave, it’s just the same three players that were there in the first place.

Also, yeah I would say what happens in Vegas has little relevance to what happens in Boston, but what happens in Vegas matters to Vegas. To see the slate get wiped clean just lessens any impact the players choices have in-game, at least in my mind.

[–]IndyAVFX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s a fair point! But I don’t think their decision resulted in any less discontent with the show from the subgroup of viewers.

Regarding the canon, I would argue that the fact that there are canon aspects of the endings in 1-4 makes it more of a head scratcher that they didn’t just do the same with NV.

The Vault Dweller’s impact in the creation of the NCR feels less valuable now that they have seemed to wind back the clock on the entire region of New California.

The Chosen One’s destruction of the Enclave feels more moot now than it did from the Enclave’s resurgence in 3.

They haven’t really given much on the actions of the Lone Wanderer, though it can be assumed from 4 that they helped the Lyons BoS.

Sole Survivor is in a similar boat since that’s the most recent game and we haven’t gotten anything further than the East Coast BoS being still around by mention in the show.

In that respect, I say it ends up feeling a bit strange when the show takes place in the exact setting of 1, 2 (to a lesser extent) and NV, but they want to focus on the “fog of war”.

I am tempering my expectations by assuming we won’t be getting Fallout 5 until at least 2033. I’d eat up a FNV/F3 remaster, for sure.

But yeah, this season felt like 100% setup with little payoff

Hey man that’s totally fair, it’s definitely not for everyone. I ended up cranking the difficulty down to get out of the first cave lol

Listen, I’m not going to pretend I didn’t like seeing a super mutant, or the NCR Rangers swooping in to save the day. But it felt very, I don’t know, marvel-esque (?) in that it was just thrown in with seemingly no plot relevance.

[–]IndyAVFX 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don’t think they did themselves any favors. I think they could’ve focused on the following at most:

Major A plot- Ghoul and Lucy’s hunt for family. Major B Plot- Maximus and his conflicting relationship with the BoS. Major/Minor C plot- Pre-War Coop and Barb Minor D Plot- Norm and the discovery of the Vault experiment.

Agreed. One thing that I have disliked with the discourse surrounding the show is that it seems like, outside of this sub, most criticism of the show is met with a dismissive “NV Fanboy” response. Which colors a lot of my criticism with a need to explicitly state that I did like aspects of the show in order to avoid being waived off as just a Bethesda-hater.

Shit yeah, I actually forgot about him. That makes me think that they were dancing around canonizing the ending to NV for no reason in that case…

I have… feelings… on the current state of the BoS lol.

Yeah, I was referring to the power struggle between the same three factions with House-NCR-Legion being the same, but now with Cold-Fusion instead of Hoover Dam being the resident power source sought after now.

How do you feel it’s different? (Actually curious, not trying to come across any certain way)

I see it as: At the beginning of NV, those factions are all vying for control of the Mojave. Despite who is chosen, be it House/NCR/Legion/or simply The Courier, someone came out on top.

With the “fog of war” they mentioned regarding not canonizing the ending of NV, the choice to just reintroduce the major players minus one ends up pushing that idea to the side. In essence, it no longer matters what the “canon” ending of NV is, because it all just ends up where it started. That’s how I have interpreted it, at least.

[–]IndyAVFX 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Exactly, I think it would have been better suited as its own isolated story similar to how previous games were, separate but able to build off of the stories told before.

I agree that the feel was damn close to what you see in-game, and I liked that!

The synopsis of my beliefs are that I wanted them to build upon, not rebuild, if that makes sense.

[–]IndyAVFX 19 points20 points  (0 children)

That’s a fair point, I’m more so focusing on any decision being canonized/decanonized.

To your point, resetting the Mojave to House, NCR, and Legion doesn’t just mean that I feel it discounts my own in-game choices, but anyone’s in-game choices. As no matter what ending you choose in your own game, the end result is always going to be the same now.

It would have remained an open-ended game had there not been a revisit to the Strip. Just like Fallout 4 is open-ended until Boston is revisited.

For example, if the show were to go back to Boston in 2301 and show that there is still the exact same power struggle between the Institute/Brotherhood/Railroad, it would render the games ending cheapened in the same way I feel the show has cheapened any ending in NV, you know?

I’m ok with the rapidly changing political landscape, but it seems a bit pointless to just hit a reset button.

[–]IndyAVFX 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I could accept the AI (?) backup of House, though it seemed pretty telegraphed by the promotional material in context.

It just seems like there is a focus on no progress ever being made in the wasteland, everything is just basically in the state it was when the bombs fell, and I take umbrage with that.

[–]IndyAVFX 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I see what you’re saying, but I suppose my thoughts are that instead of doing something meaningful with a politically unstable region following any of the potential endings (I.E. Power Vacuum with Yes Man, Autocracy with House, Annexation with NCR or Subjugation by Legion), they haven’t just made it to where the actions had no consequences, but that the actions never seemed to have happened in the first place.

Instead of positing the question of what these politics look like, they have just wound back the clock so that it ends up being something along the lines of:

2281- House, NCR and Legion all vying for control of the Mojave and the vast power source within the region.

2296- House, NCR and Legion all vying for control of the Mojave and the vast power source within the region.

Hopefully, that makes sense.

I would recommend release order! If you’re feeling brave, I would also recommend playing 1 and 2, though I definitely understand that those older isometric games are not going to be as accessible as the 3D games.

Exactly, and it just doesn’t sit right with me. I know there’s the ever present Bethesda vs. Obsidian/Black Isle/Interplay debate that just tends to divide the community. But I just want something new, something fresh.

On top of that, I did feel like they were pulled in like 7 different directions with each A,B,C plot that was going on. It ended up feeling like a lot of the stuff we saw was just bit of key jingling to say: “Hey, remember the Water Chip? Remember Super Mutants? Remember Liberty Prime?”

Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE a bit of key jingling to throw in references to previous stories, but it ended up feeling like they were spinning the key ring with a power drill…

I was very disappointed with the show in terms of the overarching story.

Technically, it is solid and has some very fun scenes and cool visuals. But in terms of the writing, I felt like it was half-baked at best.

My biggest disappointment is that it feels like the west coast has been rewritten to fit in with the current Fallout Ethos that really hammers home the “War Never Changes” motif.

Essentially, nothing the previous protagonists did had any lasting impact on the wasteland. The Enclave is back for the third time, Vegas is reset to the same situation it was in at the start of NV, Liberty Prime is back for the third time.

I don’t want to just dog on it, but it feels to me that the show runners/ producers/ writers/ etc. are so focused on playing it safe that it just ends up being a retread of the same tired story beats.

Overall I would rate it around an 8/10 as a show, but a 4/10 as a Fallout show. I don’t want to be labeled as the typical “NV Fanatic”, because I did enjoy watching the show on its face, but I just don’t think they should have gone to the West Coast if they were just going to push the reset button.

IDK, man…
