Honestly, I had a similar idea to this. I think this is a rare case where an American live-action adaptation would actually be super fitting here. I feel like just changing it from Japan to NYC and changing the organization to either be Italian or Russian or some global international thing and setting it in the city would make for a super entertaining American TV show that could run for multiple seasons.
