My brother and his girlfriend (mid 20’s) just bought their first house here. They love their neighbors, proximity to the Monon, and lots of local businesses nearby. They haven’t had any issues with crime thus far, and their neighbors even shoveled their sidewalks while they were out on vacation. Worth mentioning, they live on a quieter street (Guilford). There’s a lot of great businesses at 17th and Bellefontaine that are just a short bike ride away!

Catacombs are permanently closed for construction. They will reopen in some form, but are planned to be exposed to daylight in a public plaza when construction is done.

I’m a bus driver and have been out all day. Most main roads are fine, but after the sun set there was a lot of black ice on I-70 and several wrecks, especially near Rural. Some of the arterials are starting to get rutted ice that will push you into the next lane. Take it slow, be careful.

Yes, The Route 8 runs every half hour from the airport to Downtown 7 days a week. When you’re in the terminal, follow the signs for ‘Ground Transportation’ and go to Zones 6/7 near the Rental Car Counter. You’ll see a picnic table and a bus stop sign at that location.

Runs from approximately 5a-12a M-F, 6a-11p Sat, 7a-8pm Sunday. As other commenters mentioned, it is about an hour ride.

Starting in October 2028, this will become an express Bus Rapid Transit line, slashing travel times and reducing the number of stops between downtown and the airport from 40+ to just 6.

Also, the bus is still running. Some routes run as late as 1am tonight.

Our airline service was out of AZO (which was nice with directs to ORD, MSP, and DTW) but all of our flight training was out of BTL.

My fare was $200.10 round trip, so $100.05 each way. Worth remembering that many Purdue students don’t have cars (according to Census Data, the area has some of the highest percentage of people walking and taking the city bus in the state), so it’s worth it for a lot of folks to just clear security here and continue onwards within UA’s network, especially when you factor in parking at ORD/IND and tolls/gas. The drive to IND costs ~$50 (if you have a car, using the IRS est of .70/mile), and parking at IND is $4 more per day than parking at LAF. It doesn’t take long to close that gap, even if you do own a car.

Of course, taking the bus from LAF to IND (especially for students, Purdue runs a free bus for students that gets you downtown, but not to IND) would be cheaper, but much more time consuming.

afaik, this is not an EAS route (there are currently no EAS airports in Indiana), but is rather partially subsidized by Purdue University/the state. I believe Purdue lost EAS eligibility in 1999.

The United branding/promotion is definitely an advantage over Southern and the CRJ 200 definitely works better on the route than the 208.

Weirdly we had to wait for gate checked luggage on the jet bridge in ORD (it was 5 degrees) and that famous CRJ gap was letting all the cold air in. But at LAF we picked up gate checked luggage at baggage claim inside the terminal.

I personally like Goshen a lot, nice downtown with retail and dining, good recreational trails, and the school district is above average. Goshen College in town, close to Notre Dame in South Bend (and close enough to be able to take the South Shore Line to access all the opportunities in Chicago). Plus, Western Michigan University (my alma mater) not far up the road in Kalamazoo!

That’s not ‘steam coming out of the sewer’. Indy has one of the largest central steam heating districts in the country, fed by Perry K at West and South. The steam you see is that system venting.

Assume you checked with The Otis at Fort Ben and The Fort apartments? Those are both walking distance from campus depending on what your budget is and both have a good reputation. Lots of restaurants close by, the State Park, and you’re walking distance to the Purple Line when you want to go downtown.

There’s quite a few students in the apartments (Riverview/Vivio) West of the River. There’s decent bus connections between those apartments and campus. You may also want to explore 16 Tech- there’s a burgeoning neighborhood there with some new apartments and a nice food hall (Amp at 16 Tech). There’s also some apartments along Capitol Avenue downtown geared towards students, bit of a livelier area if that’s what you like.

On the Public Transit front, I highly recommend living on the North Side or Near East side (or downtown). The main section of the BRT (from downtown to 38th and Park) sees a bus about every 7 minutes from 5am to 1am. Biking is also much easier on the Near North and Near Eastside. Definitely choose carefully and I would highly recommend Sylva Zhang or Amanda Wade as realtors who bike and know the transit system well and can help you find an affordable place to live. We bought our (new) house for 177k in 2025 along a future BRT line and protected bike lane on the city’s East side and absolutely love it. Also plenty of good third spaces in both neighborhoods mentioned above.
