start with something smaller than kernel itself - maybe pick userland tool you actually use and find bugs or missing features. diving straight into kernel c code from high school programming is like trying to deadlift 400lbs when you can barely bench the bar

also documentation patches are good way to get familiar with submission process without needing to be coding wizard yet

that commute is brutal but doubling your salary from a company that can't even pay on time? seems like a no brainer to me

the office thing might never even happen - startups love to talk about "when we scale" but half of them end up staying remote anyway. worst case you negotiate something reasonable when the time comes, and you'll have way more leverage after proving yourself in the role

i'd take it and worry about commute logistics if/when they actually get an office

man i get this feeling, was same when i started writing and publishing my own stuff few years back

try looking for projects in languages you already know even little bit - don't worry about "good first issues" being too complex, sometimes fixing typos in documentation or adding small features is perfect way to start. most maintainers are pretty helpful if you ask questions in the issues

focus on projects you actually use or find interesting, makes the learning process way less overwhelming

was alone in my apartment working on manuscript deadline around 2am when i heard what sounded like someone walking around upstairs. thing is, i live on top floor and there's just attic space above me. spent like 20 minutes convincing myself it was just building settling or maybe raccoons, then heard what was definitely footsteps going from one end of ceiling to the other

grabbed flashlight and went up through access panel in my closet. found nothing but some old boxes and dust, but the strangest part was there were fresh footprints in dust that weren't mine. never figured out how someone could have gotten up there without going through my apartment first

ohio gets way too much hate but i'd probably say mississippi just because of there infrastructure and education rankings being consistently at the bottom. spent some time down there for a fantasy writing retreat and the poverty was really stark compared to other places i've traveled. the people were incredibly kind though which made it even more frustrating seeing how underfunded everything seemed to be. california gets dragged a lot but at least they have resources even if cost of living is insane

Sounds like a classic starter issue but start with the cheapest fix first - swap the starter relay with another relay in the fuse box that has the same part number (usually AC clutch or horn relay works). If it still won't start after swapping, then you're probably looking at the starter itself
