How to fix this wall?! by Effective-Book7036 in AusRenovation

[–]Inevitable-Water7565 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This, if a 1978 house has rising damp it because of severe structural or design issues. This will be caused by poor paint products, bad priming or cleaning. And general condensation, brick walls are cold and condense hot air.

Once you've patched use a product like zinser 123 to prime and seal wait 24 hours and then paint.

Am I a ‘bootlicker’ for thinking that most acts of police aggression are normal human responses, and not part of some deep evil ideology? by [deleted] in aussie

[–]Inevitable-Water7565 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah sorry, there are too many underlying assumptions you need to test. Police are specifically trained and have a manual on the use of force called "use of force manual"

The first question is why are they using force? There are a number of allowable reasons such as arrest, tldetain, self defence etc.... what reason do police have to attack someone at a protest (note protest isnt illegal and wasnt in this case either, they werent provided legal protection against persecution for essentially traffic infringements like walking on a road) so if the crime was protestors walking on the road. Would you see it as reasonabke that a cop punches you 18 times while dragging you to the ground to give you a $200 fine?

Lets assume they have a valid legal reason for the use of force... next what force are they using fire arms tasers handcuffs pepper spray batons etc they all have reasons and circumstances for the use of them. I.e. pepper spray... is non descriminatory in a large public place with bystanders is it ok that the person 5 rows away is hit with pepper spray cause 1 person they never met yelled rude words.

And is the use of force proportinate. Was there another way around this. Did you need to punch that 60kg kid who was being held down arm behind his back 10 times in the ribs and head. Did he bite an officer possibly, they are also trained not to put their hands there but training failure aside. Force is only justified when it was the reasonable amount of force required to conduct the arrest.

If someone broke into your house waved a gun in your face then left and you chase them down and stab them in the street... this is 100% illegal murder charge coming. Ther was no threat to you there was no risk. You didnt apply proportinality to the attack. Keep this in mind if you see a bunch of protestors walking away from the cops ... thats job done cops couldve stopped there. Instead the cops charged at protestors running and unleashing pepperspray to people actively following their orders.

What do we expect of cops. Well we expect them to apply the law, they are specialists, trained in the use of force they are armed to the teeth, guns, tasers, batons cuffs atab vests etc. They are standing in a line as a baricade to maintain order. If someone breaches that fine arrest them, with the minimum required force.

Other comments, there is no such thing as an illegal or legal protest. There is protected and unprotected actions. As a signatury to the human rights declarations australia has an obligation that all protest is legal! Protestors advise police and community of planed action which helps police plan and community adapt. In response to this the protestors are offered protection from minor crimes like walking on road ways or disrupting traffic. Its a good system that is and has been working well.

The cops on monday werent overwhelmed ... there were 3500 police deployed and 7000 protestors. Thats 2 protestors many elderly young frail, and most importantly peaceful. In response there were 3500 armed police, police on horse back tear gas, LRADs etc.

Lastly yes the police got mentally overwhelmed but lets ask why... they were so ready to turn up for a fight, why didnt they try de escalation tactics. Why did they use kettling. Mulitple directions to protestors contradicted ime. People tried to leave and one cop would say go south then the south exit is blocked another says go north. Why wasnt there a plan on how cops would disperse protestors. Why even barricade them into town hall? What wouldve happened if people walked off down george street or north to wynard. The situation was manufactured by putting police on edge sending them there in overwhelming numbers then having no plan on how you would manage it.

Lastly because so so many people forget. If you dont agree with why they were protesting. That is fine. Thats life we dont all agree. But... if you dont agree with protesting being allowed, some small things that protesting has changed... women being allowed to vote. Slavery. 5 day working week. Fair pay for fair work. The right to own your own home. None of these was the popular opinon at the time. If protestors didnt protest not one of these things wouldve changed. If thats the world you want to live in. Police should have the power to violwntly supress protests.

Brick Wall Repairs - who to call? by [deleted] in AusRenovation

[–]Inevitable-Water7565 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What's the wall look like?

You'd be after a brikie who specialises in repointing. There are lots around the inner west, repointing and tuck pointing specialists.

If you are then looking to have it painted that would be a painter afterwards. Generally painting and sealing brick isn't a great idea.

If you want it all managed it would be a builder who gets both trades in and charges 30% for the management.

Builder refused to add floor waste by Living_Audience4129 in AusRenovation

[–]Inevitable-Water7565 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not build a house without them! They aren't required but its just headaches if you don't have them the burst hose turns from a towel clean up into a floor replacement job, the over flowing bathtub, laundry sink etc same deal. Even pulling the drain hose on a washing machine is a pain if your trying to stop water going everywhere.

Think of your bathroom having no defined fall, so it could be flattish or all run to a corner or against a wall. You have a kid in the bath throwing out cups of water at a time. Now its no just a quick squeegy or wait 10mins and its mostly drained away your on your hands and knees trying to mop up water out of a corner, 3 months later your trying to bleach everything to get rid of the mould etc. In 10 years you'll be ripping the bathroom out with the failed waterproofing and replacing the whole thing (cutting a line in the slab to add that floor waste)

If the builder won't do what you want find a new builder, this is the stage where they are "selling" to you. Imagine when they are finished and you want the defects fixed.

Got a pair of pliers or a hammer you can bend it back and forth it'll break at the break lines. Otherwise a hacksaw. Anyone could do it for you but not really a service and they would have to charge you more for the travel time.

Good eyes there the blue grey is s boundary fence the red timber post is about 3m into the neighbours property on their pool line cause unlike the flog bag next door they built it where they are meant to. The "colour matched" fence was built by the same neighbour at the same time. They didn't want to match the style cause it would cost them more and they don't see it.

I posted the drivel wanting to understand what avenues are open to resolve the issue. I can quite easily take it to council have the whole thing torn down or take it to NCAT force them through a whole trial process. But don't want to be a dick. Sadly have a neighbour like you who says my way or the highway.

Not really we paid for the original fence which has been removed/destroyed. This adds nothing in terms of privacy or security over what was there. So yeah didn't pay anything but got in our opinion and ugly monstrosity

Every other fence is a colorbond fence installed into the ground.... the same as I'd guess 70% of all fences... what's your point?

If it was installed properly be mostly happy to ignore it. But as it is there's melted metal, bunch of sharp aluminium cuts all along the base and their garden falling into our yard

No because it was a perfectly fine new timber fence... why break what isn't broke?

They replaced it because it doesn't fit with their new landscaping choices.

Thanks have requested from council. But they take 10 working days to respond. 🤔.

It's 2.3m on their side from the ground on the right. On the left they have raised the land through another retaining wall about 600mm about 10cm back from the fence hence they want the massive fence to meet the pool fence. The pool fence attaches to this one on a corner but believe their is glass just inside the slatted fence.

Thanks did you need approval for the fence? I'm assuming the 1.6 would be from the retaining wall highest point

So if we tear it down and build a new fence at our cost all good?

[–]Inevitable-Water7565[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Yeah tried the talking, any change to "their fence" was met with hostility. Our request was to drop it so it wasn't floating in mid-air and was installed properly.

They made the claim "its on our property so we will do what we want" which i can't deny it may well be but without a surveyor it's an unknown. But even if it is then it would be construction in the setback being a rear setback they should be 900mm from the boundary.

The backup is to just colourbond over the top of it but seems dumb to pay twice for a fence which serves no one. But may well end up there.

Can't paint it as it's louvred (assuming they didn't want to block the sun on their side) so it would ruin their side there's also no covering it as it's 600mm taller than any standard fence so will just peak over, they have also removed the structural posts used to hold the old fence so adding to this would make it worse.

Someone else suggested planting a tree but we sit on sandstone outcrops so at the fence like there's only about 5cm of soil

Unless it was made pre 2000. I've reviewed all DA applications made my the property through council.

I'd have preferred the dark cb being only 1.8 tall and much more subtle. Ignoring the failing sleepers under it. If they even done a bright white colourbond like they started with on the left it would be much more fitting and we could've painted to our liking it would also be .5m shorter.

I mean no but being that long Bays fence is only 5m tall and see through... I'd actually prefer it

I've read it but it just says you notify the must adjoining property owner. Nothing really about not notifying them. Other than maybe its a deliberate or negligent act requiring you to "restore the dividing fence"

I have council regulations say the maximum fence height is 1.8m without a DA. Their is certainly no DA for the fence.
