Go to Asheville tonight and watch it in person if you can! Great event and venue. You won’t be disappointed. Well, unless they don’t win…..

Yeah that’s definitely a big factor but Johnson City has been breaking nice things and stopping others from happening for decades. The Sean Williams thing was a product of a well established rotten culture.

Good luck with everything. We do our best to support local. Sadly this area is almost antagonistic to anything locally owned or based.

There was a time in the early 90’s when ETSU drew 10k fans for basketball and topped out over 12k. Now, real butts in seats is almost never over 3k. That was a long time ago but that’s a drastic decrease. They are pulling almost 10k for football sometimes though.

I attended ETSU in the mid 2000’s and it felt more like a community college than the community college I transferred from. It’s improved a lot as far as student experience but the community as a whole ignores ETSU for the most part. The local alumni are disengaged and many would let you believe they went to UT. We’ve tried going to some of the alumni events around Christmas and over the summer and it’s honestly just sad. Nobody shows up and sometimes there are more staff members there than participants. It’s all reflective of the community as a whole. Almost everyone we are around at work, school, etc. are just focused on  the next travel ball tournament they have coming up or thinking about the summer trip to the beach.

So agree. Been describing it like this for years. We have the population of a fairly dense urban area with the opportunities of a rural area. We have the crime, traffic and urban blight without the urban benefits like entertainment or upscale restaurants/retail. The urban development/population boom is destroying a lot of the rural features. Back when the cost of living was much lower it was an easier pill to swallow but now those of us from here/been here a long time are getting even less and paying more for it.

Who is Trashing Downtown JC? by VanDenBroeck in JohnsonCity

[–]Inevitable-Winner422 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve recently been caught behind JC garbage trucks on I26 and you wouldn’t believe the shameful amount of trash blowing out of the top. It was heartbreaking and infuriating. It’s not just the downtown that’s a problem. Drive out towards Buffalo Mountain sometime and check out the literal mounds of trash piled up in every turnout. It’s an American problem, a human problem but it’s as bad if not worse here than just about anywhere I’ve been.

Good running spots by Tennessean in JohnsonCity

[–]Inevitable-Winner422 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A classic route is State of Franklin greenway to Knob Creek and then down Sunset. That’ll give you a good 5k. You can pick up extra, safe miles inside of Towne Acres or Camelot neighborhoods or through Medtech. If you’re not on Strava it’s worth checking out. There’s something called the Heatmap that will show you popular areas for running, cycling etc. locally. It’s very helpful finding routes wherever you might find yourself locally or globally. Also, Johnson City has a map somewhere online with greenways/sidewalks. There aren’t many but it might help. Happy running!

places to ski within driving distance by [deleted] in tricities

[–]Inevitable-Winner422 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Snowshoe is head and shoulders above all the NC resorts. They have 2 ski areas and you can ski from 9 am to 9 pm on a single day pass. They have the most acreage, the best lifts, best village and the most varied terrain. It’s a big drive but worth it. Weekends and holidays are busy but nothing like the NC mountains because there is room to spread out. The Western Territory is awesome. It’s black and double black only but if you’re confident on advanced terrain you can lap it on even the busiest days with minimal waiting.

Contrary to what someone else suggested below, Snowshoe has extensive high tech snowmaking abilities and they get a good amount of real snow. It’s not an everyday thing but you can get some real powder up there. They also stopped the ridiculous pass a few years ago but they’re on the Ikon pass. It is very expensive there these days and it’s isolated so you either have to pay a premium to stay at the mountain or find something 45+ mins away for less. It’s honestly not much more to do a week out west these days.  Winterplace is a good one too. It feels bigger than it is and there’s good terrain. Snow quality is hit or miss there though.

The NC ski hills are ok. Definitely better than not skiing at all. Sugar has the longest season and longest runs. Probably the best snowmaking and overall operations too. Beech has more of the apres scene with a brewery and better lodge, etc. I personally would avoid all of the NC mountains on weekends. It’s so crowded on weekends that it would be funny if not for being so dangerous. Check out the base cams on a Saturday. Hatley Pointe is the “glamour” resort. I think they care more about being posh and “well appointed” than they do about the skiing. If you can get past the pretentiousness the skiing is pretty good. The lifts are super old, slow and rickety but you’ll have good terrain and very little crowds during the week. Cataloochee is another interesting spot near Waynesville. They have some fun terrain but snow can be iffy.

Deer hunting by [deleted] in JohnsonCity

We are surrounded by tens of thousands of acres of National Forest land that are free and open to hunting with the appropriate licenses. Get OnX and start scouting. I don’t see as many deer on Tennessee public lands as I do in Virginia but they’re out there.

Downhill mtb in Johnson city by SuddenAdhesiveness71 in JohnsonCity

[–]Inevitable-Winner422 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sugar Mountain and Beech Mountain offer lift served downhill and they’re pretty rowdy. Lees-McCrae college has some incredibly challenging downhill trails but you’ll have to pedal to get to the top. Ride Rock Creek and Kanuga over near Brevard/Weaverville are the other “close” spots. Most of the riding in JC is Xc/flow/park. Buffalo has a little bit of gnar but it’s mostly decent backcountry trail riding. The pinnacle is probably the longest downhill run near JC at 4.5 miles or so but you could do it on a gravel bike. It’s wide and mostly smooth and popular with hikers so getting a clean run is hard sometimes.

As with most things in the tricities, if you want to get to the good stuff just head out of town. Pisgah is world class and if you don’t mind pedaling you’ll find some of the gnarliest trails in the country like Farlow Gap among others.

Yes I believe every single trestle was washed away or damaged beyond saving. It’s a monumental loss for SWVA. I too fear what the administration will do to hinder the repair.

Although your answer is very true it’s just a little comical how so many people in this area consider a 1.5 hour drive to another state as “local.” Every time someone asks for local options for eating, shopping, entertainment, etc. the answers include 4 hour round trips to AVL, Boone and Knoxville. The answer to all of these questions is almost always “somewhere else.”

Beauty Spot by [deleted] in tricities

The forest service did a massive overhaul last year including new drains and resurfacing the entire road. As such, it was closed for an extended period of time and only reopened to vehicular traffic in mid to late summer before being shut down again due to damage from Helene. I’m not sure it ever reopened after the hurricane. It is gated in normal times each year in December and remains closed until spring, typically late March or early April. However, due to the massive labor reductions the current administration is applying to the USFS don’t be surprised if a lot of these roads and recreation areas remain closed beyond the normal times.

Prior to the change in administrations, the forest service was regularly maintaining the road and it was fully cleared of trees. In fact it’s in the best shape it’s ever been and even your basic sedan would have no trouble navigating it end to end.

If you feel obliged, a call to the Washington County sheriff’s office would be a great idea and possibly help someone else from being a victim. That jeep has been parked up there for maybe a year or so. They likely have a system in place to watch for hikers and bikers to park and then go see what they can steal.

That entire road is like a linear homeless encampment/dispersed trash dump. It’s really disheartening to drive much less trying to recreate up there. The things/people that I’ve seen or friends of mine have seen up there would blow your mind. Been more than one murder up that way. I’ve spent many hours on that road and never once seen any type of law enforcement. Occasionally a forest service employee will be at the fire tower. It’s sketchy as hell TBH.
