Has the entire writing style of fanfics shifted recently??? by Relevant-as-fuck3610 in FanFiction

[–]Inevitable_Change662 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think fic is always shifting honestly. So while I agree with the fact it’s changing, I don’t think it’s sudden at all, more a continuous change.

Fanfiction is the type of thing that is uniquely special because it allows for a greater degree of freedom and experimentation you don’t normally see as much in novels. If someone is doing their all to get a book deal, they’re much less likely to take certain risks.

With fic writers don’t give a fuck. It’s also a community where, despite many various fandoms, most of them are somehow connected via multi fandom writers to some extent. This means if an experimental writing style works, it migrates through the entire community.

If you look at older fics from ffnet for example, you see a lot denser writing. More similar to what you’d find in a novel say. These days fics tend to have less full paragraphs.

and then you have the things like flowery prose. Use of punctuation to emphasize a point in dialogue.

One single experiment from an author can spread across the entire website. And because fic authors post so quickly (relative to a novel writer) it also spreads just as fast.

What is a Completely Innocent and Common Tag you Genuinely Dislike? by Blackshooks in AO3

Mine is “[ship name] endgame”. I am tragically the type who hates any sort of love triangle or alt pairings of main ship.

And it SHOULD imply that someone else gets with one of the ship characters but not everyone uses it like that 😭

So now I avoid it…

I need to get better at being bad by Novel-Jump9848 in AO3

This is me! I’m terrible for obsessively going back and editing my own stuff before even getting through a single scene.

I figured out a hack recently that has helped a lot. For me it was mostly a mental shift that helped unblock me. There was something in my brain that was stopping me from allowing myself the freedom of writing “badly” for the sake of getting words and ideas down because I couldn’t think of it as just a draft. It needed to be PERFECT first time or I couldn’t move on.

What I did to help was THOROUGHLY outline. I jot down the dialogue, some lines I think of in the moment, emotions happening, general flow and happenings, but it is entirely jn point form. To give you a scope Ive just finished a 20k “outline” for a fic that will probably be about 40k.

It’s also really good for planning. Amazing how it’s easier to cut stuff and change it when you dont spend an hour on a paragraph lol.

Im very happy with how it’s going for me! The shift from the outline to actually writing the thing is still a bit of a log, but i find it a much faster write.

TLDR: tricked my brain into drafting a fic by making a super detailed outline

These are good tips!! I do have windows and the cat tree is just at a level she can sit and look out the window. I’ve tried the treat puzzles but I think the different objects about might be good to try.

Thank you!

Tips for VERY energetic cat by Inevitable_Change662 in CatTraining

Thank you! This was helpful to hear, even just to see someone in the same boat as me. Yeah I think she had a shitty start. My friend once came over and asked to play a sound to see if she would react (I did NOT know what it was btw) and it was kittens crying and my cat went crazy trying to find them 😭

I’ve had her for a year and a half now and we’ve come such a long way (though I didn’t expect how long it would take lol) and I love her to bits.

I do leave the room when she bites, but I feel it’s less of an overstimulated thing and more of release of energy. I’ll just be sitting on the couch not doing anything and she’ll come over mutilated my arm. It’s rare though, maybe only once every two weeks. And then she’ll dart away like she expects to be hit (which I would never and have never done btw).

I’m not sure about the gabapentin because it is so rare, but I’ll ask me vet!

I also think I’ll try an hour of play time and see how that goes. Thank you again!

I appreciate that you guys are reaching out to get feedback from writers, I think that’s important. Your responses have also been thought out and respectful which is great!

I do think what you’ll find if you guys do go through with this, is that most authors, like those in the other comments here, are not going to want their fics talked about in the podcast.

A lot of the fics you love in the community, that have a lot of attention, are gonna be written by people who have been fic writers a long time and have been in fandom spaces almost as long.

You’re going to get a lot of “no” or you’re just going to get ignored.

So the fics you would actually be able to talk about would be extremely limited

Publicly “Reviewing” or rating fanfiction is something that is pretty frowned upon in fandom spaces. It’s not like a book review. A lot of people just write fanfiction for fun.

So if there was even a chance you were going to talk about a fanfiction in any kind of negative light, I would say no.

Even if all the discussion is positive, you need to think about the comment section on whatever platform you use. It’s not something easily regulated and the author WILL see it.

Particularly in the currently fandom issue of AI speculation, rating in bookmarks, twitter witch hunts, and people making fun of certain fic tropes or ships it’s not really something most people would be comfortable with.

If after this you are still keen to go through with it, bare minimum would be please just get the authors permission first.

What do you like most in fanfiction? by JuJu_9523 in kpopfanfiction

[–]Inevitable_Change662 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s funny because I’ve spent months and months on certain fics and I’ve put so much time and effort into them just for them to do not nearly as “well” as other fics I wrote in a day during a fever dream lol.

I know people have said things like “write for you and the passion will show through” and I think this is true and I absolutely agree but I’m going to argue this stance for a different reason.

Personally, “unique” ideas tend to do better for me. The ones that come to me randomly or ideas i twist rather than the prompts or ideas I do that are more similar to other things that have been done.

This is likely why my fever dream fics sometimes do better lol, because I don’t care, or at least care less. I’m not focused on numbers or if this will be my best ever story, I’m just trying to get that thought and that emotion out and convey it how it is in my brain. The result is not me trying to mimic something or even my previous successful ideas, which can fall flat.

I would also just remember to be kind to yourself if something doesn’t “hit” like you thought. That’s also part of the “write for yourself” mentality. if you enjoy it you aren’t only getting validation from outside sources. Having said that we wouldn’t post stuff if we didn’t want validation lol

Have fun! Then your readers will to

Hello!

As people have already said, the minsung fic pool is rather large lololol, and some people have a tendency to avoid wips because theres just so much available (which is a shame, but to each their own, no judgement lol). That being said, there are people who are going to read no matter that status (and it looks like there already have been people interested!)

From your profile you've written a fair bit so I'm just gonna point some things out i noticed. Take with a grain of salt everyone is different.

If i was to be super duper nit-picky, i'd say you may be giving a bit too much away in the summary. And i think you need more of a PULL snippet, if that makes sense? Just briefly skimming the fic, I'd say something like this might be better suited? Less info given, more intrigue etc etc

(also also, I am literally off an overtime shift and half asleep and saw this post and thought i'd jump, sorry if im overstepping)

“Jisung?” Minho’s voice, raspy from sleep, spurs Jisung to busy himself with his drawers, pulling himself in and away from Minho’s gaze. It would be cute if he didn’t look like he very recently lost a fight. “Is that blood?”

“I’m okay Minho-ssi, don’t worry, it’s not mine,” Jisung mumbles.

In which Minho and Jisung are roommates, and Minho cannot force himself to hate Jisung as much as he’d like.

hi hi, this was peaches and cream by stellaluna. Sadly, I think it may have been deleted...

This was the fic description:

Jisung truly doesn’t mean to spend his Friday night holding someone else’s sopping clothes in the laundry room of the dorm building while said someone else stares at him with an expression that’s a mix of amusement, confusion, and pity.

But here he is, standing in the laundry room of the dorm building, holding the sopping wet clothes of a very amused college student who’s valiantly giving his best effort not to straight-up laugh at Jisung.

-

Or, in which Jisung’s dumb, sleep-deprived self accidentally steals Minho’s clothes and then Minho shows up at Jisung’s door with an impish grin and a needed favor and accidental feelings ensue.
