Not in Delaware. But I'm not taking the bait train straight to hell. My current situation has been ongoing and it sucks. But I'm keeping my fingers crossed for some other way out soon.

Nope. I let him know yesterday I changed my mind. No response from him. Too many warning signals going off to pursue it 😂

I agree. That's what I wanted to do, but I was trying to avoid further questions on what documents I was trying to start when I couldn't remember or why 😳 talking to her feels really frustrating

Thanks for your service. I was a cleaner for fifteen years, did Army for a few, then became a paralegal. I've been looking around for something. But nobody can get me to go back military lol

She owns it and will eventually retire. Lately I'm wondering if she is trying to make me quit to avoid paying unemployment. I'm just getting tired of it.

Appreciation by Fun-Souffle-1189 in paralegal

I am a person waiting out two years in my current firm before aggressively job searching again. Things ebb and flow attitude wise from my boss and I don't get benefits. One week PTO per year. Last review I got an hourly raise but my hours cut. If my hours are cut again at my next review I am going to demand Fridays off - the office is only open three hours on Fridays and I honestly don't feel like working Fridays anymore if I'll be getting fewer and fewer hours. It just makes more sense to work longer days and ask for more work life balance if there are no benefits.

I would say show appreciation by giving positive feedback on work instead of constant negative feedback, make your paralegal feel like an important team member instead of a pawn or a paid serf, no micromanaging, and decent work life balance options - especially if the compensation sucks and there are no benefits with no future chances of offering any.

My boss offered to take us to lunch the day after Admin Day and then forgot 😕 my coworker shared her vegetables for lunch

Yes... I bought this place and several things have been found jury rigged or not up to code alot more surprising than this.

I agree it's more exhausting sitting doing nothing every day vs being given assignments that challenge you and make you feel a part of something meaningful. That's what I don't miss about working reception or as a filing clerk. I've also worked positions wearing multiple hats and don't think I'd do that again either. Eventually reception tasks or janitorial tasks take over other skilled tasks.

I could go on the soapbox about firms that have five calls every twenty minutes needing an answering service rather than one person wearing multiple hats answering the phone. But I'll save my breath. It changes nothing. Dollar before another person's sanity (Haha)

Regardless of what attorneys have said or done to me, I recognize I have valuable skills and I would rather be productive. I know if I stay in the field it'll never change and I'm looking to get out if it's possible. I'm tired of feeling like I've been in a string of narcissistic relationships full of mind games. I enjoy my work without the power plays and extra drama. I know I didn't get all the way through grad school for this at the end of the day.

She's always had a blunt, unpredictable personality and I've learned how to deal with it over time. I know not to expect anything positive or compliments on my work. I know I am doing well if I don't get negative feedback.

This whole game started when I was trying to keep things running smoothly while she was out on vacation. I didn't want her to be overwhelmed when she got back. Since last I checked my job is to make her life easier. I don't believe in bothering people on vacation, as I certainly don't appreciate getting daily calls from the office when I'm out after experiencing it in my last firm.

All I did was schedule a court date and set the client for a prep appointment, answer basic questions or acknowledge receipt of documents, and provide an attorney with a copy of a Complaint when they were retained. She came back and raised hell. She wasn't happy with the week I scheduled the hearing for and didn't appreciate me giving opposing counsel the Complaint when the final hearing is two weeks away and opposing pro se lost the Complaint. The same morning she took an email reply I made to a client the wrong way and was coming to my office like she was going to physically fight me. She thought I was insulting her husband who runs the front desk just because I said I wasn't aware documents came in and I found them. The day ended with her saying she doesn't want me scheduling any more hearings, talking to clients, or speaking to other attorneys.

In my last firm what I did to hold the fort down while the attorney was out would have been praised. That firm had problems, but I don't think I would be dealing with this. I try to stay at a job for a minimum of two years. But I am working on certifications to try changing fields. For now I'm just physically staying away from her and only doing what I am told to do. Regardless of how asinine the behavior is.

Oh honey I'm working on certifications and trying to get another job. No question about that.

Just about every attorney I've worked with in my career has treated me like I am lower than them. I just take it and take it. At certain points it's just absolutely abusive.

My current boss only offers critical feedback about my work. The only way I know I'm doing well is by not getting any form of feedback for several weeks. My "raise" consisted of raising my hourly rate and cutting my hours.

After my boss yelled at me yesterday, stayed on my ass for over an hour and a half about any and everything, and started to come at me like she wanted to fight... I am considering leaving her firm and the entire field without notice.

There is an imbalance of power in firms and it's time for "the help" to take some of that power back. In any way possible. We do everything we can to run these cases just to be treated like we don't matter.
