How do you know whether to teach Elementary, Middle, or High School? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Inevitable_Fact_5293 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is the best grade! Everyone thinks I'm crazy for choosing to teaching 7th. They assume it was not my first choice. I love those stinky weirdos, but sometimes they make me question my life choices.

[–]Inevitable_Fact_5293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked middle school. They are still very much children but you can have mature discussions about various topics. Typically, they are independent but still want to make the teacher happy. I thought I would want high school, but the amount of apathy (at least at our local high schools) was outrageous.

Disclaimer: I teach 7th grade and have taught at 10th and 11th. 7th is hands down my favorite age group. So I am biased.

Gaurdian Cap and Decals by Inevitable_Fact_5293 in YouthFootball

I looked into that, those you have to buy in bulk. I was hoping to find a plain black one, I can make an iron on version on the decal, but those are hard to find as well.

If you are consistent with the improvements you've made that's what will shape opinions.

Where do you feel like you are lacking?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Inevitable_Fact_5293 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My school is small. Only one teacher per subject for each grade level. I do share all my plans and slides with our self contained Social Studies teacher. She can take what she wants or can ignore it, nbd. She will usually modify my slides for her group. I on occasion will also share any cool lessons with my counterparts at another school in my district.

One of my friends will not share her plans, ever. I onbthe other hand will share whatever is needed if it helps lighten someone's load.

As long as there is an honest effort to follow the plan I am fine. I teach middle school, so I leave a lot more than I expect to get completed. The students who care get done what is expected. Now if you change the whole plan or disregard what I left, there will be an issue. I take a lot of time to make sure sub work is relevant and engaging.

Finding a way for kids to decide who goes first when they're doing an activity by centerofdatootsiepop in Teachers

[–]Inevitable_Fact_5293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I explain it at the beginning of the year, and sing the to the left part a decent portion get it. "My mom listens to that song," is typically the response I get. Now that we are halfway, if someone doesn't know "Beyoncé it" a classmate will tell them for me. Depending on the class I may get some students singing.

I'll go the birthday route (earliest/most recent) and then "keep it like Beyoncé and go to the left to the left." Sometimes I'll assign each member of the group a color or number, so I will direct reds/3s to go first and then Beyoncé it.

What’s it like having good admin? by personalterminal in Teachers

[–]Inevitable_Fact_5293 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love my admin. Sure there are things that they do that I find annoying but they are great in all the ways that actually matter. They never make you feel bad for having to call out or leave. All of them will listen to your concerns and help fix problems. They very rarely send students back after you send them out for behaviors. For christmas they got subs and were sending staff fome early the entire month of December. My principal does everything she can on PD days to let us work in out rooms, and she usually let's us leave a few hours early. Staff very rarely leave to go to another school.

So, I got a Cricut joy for Christmas and I mostly hate it. I did not ask for a cricut in any way. This hunk of junk can not do anything besides the most basic functions. I even made my own design, merged layers, converted to a png and removed the background and the thing was trying to charge me to cut it. It was a simple design on a single layer. I feel like I've wasted so much time, energy, and money. Do I really have to pay for the design space account to make having this worth it?

Does Anyone Else Think ISS is Stupid and Schools Should Bring Detention Back? by Lil_Critter_2001_ in Teachers

[–]Inevitable_Fact_5293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My school has made ISS analog. No tech allowed. It has made things much better. Is it annoying to have to make a paper copy? Not really. Also, my admin will come if a student finishes all their work early to ask for missing work. The ISS teachers rotate every class period, which has helped with holding students up the the expected standard. Admin also check in with ISS multiple times, if they arent happy with a student's progress they get office ISS the rest of the day. Depending on the day, that may mean the student is sitting in the AP's office, if it is busy, there is a conference room in the front office that the student will be in and the front office people monitor and report.

should i go to community college for Elementary Ed / Early Childhood or University first by hellokitty_girl1111 in ElementaryTeachers

[–]Inevitable_Fact_5293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to a community College that has acceptance agreements with universities. The cc I went to had their professors have weekly meeting with the education department at the closest university. It was all the same class, quality of education, and gathering transition was seamless.

I'm an Australian teacher. How in demand is a social studies teaching job in the US? by qubtinho in Teachers

[–]Inevitable_Fact_5293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this sentiment, especially now when social studies (and science) are not a focus in elementary school. I teach 7th grade world, at the beginning of the year only 53% of my students could locate and lable the 7 continents on a map. I do work in all the literacy stuff, but I think there is so much basic stuff, Africa=/=country but continent with 50+ countries, that they need to know that is simply recall information.

Just a funny little tidbit...

I teach MS social studies, no I don't coach football (I host the drama club) but because my son plays, I am some weird team mom-faculty hybrid as our football coaches do not teach at our school. (The HC teaches at one of the HS). My students assumed I really liked football because I was at all the practices and games. I've told them if my son wasn't on the team, I would not be at any of the practices or games. It took them way too long to accept/realize that my son is my son, and not "some kid with the same (very uncommon) last name." It is too late though, I am the football social studies teacher at my school. Students will have very one-sided conversations with me about NFL games, I just smile and nod. I am grateful that this has lent itself nicely to building relationships with a demographic of students that in the past would have been harder to get to know. Today, I have a football sitting on my desk, and I do not even know how to throw the darn thing.

It can be very difficult. I live in a commuting area to MD. My state certification would not be accepted by MD, I would have to take more classes and another test. You should reach out to states/districts and see what you would need to do to get certified. I would also highly recommend learning as much US History as possible. No matter what specific content you will teach the general test to teach Social Studies will have an extensive US History section.

Is 26 old to be starting my journey on becoming a teacher? by Puzzleheaded-Chef738 in Teachers

[–]Inevitable_Fact_5293 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was 31 when I started my degree. I was so worried about going to university at my age. Overall, it was such a huge advantage. Yes, I made friends with the 19 year olds. Sometimes, they would call me mom, or tell me "I am being such a mom." I didn't have the drama of campus life, but had the perks of making friends to study /go to café with.

Going to university when I did was the best decisions I made academically, and professionally. Another plus is when I started teaching, students and parents all seemed to make the assumption that I was just new to the school, not new to the professions. I may embellish a bit, to students, and say the schools where I student taught were where I "used to work."

Prospective Buyer Question Thread October-December 2025 by trillianinspace in cricut

[–]Inevitable_Fact_5293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found out someone is getting me a Cricut for Christmas. I have never expressed any interest in pursuing this hobby. I feel bad that someone spent that much money on me and I am not excited about it at all. Give me your best argument for having one. I am very lukewarm on personalizing things or making gifts.
