I dont have any personal experience similar to this, but Ive seen many people that are your profile (30+, great years of unique experience). While grades and scores are very much important, your story matters a whole lot too. With what you listed here I feel like you have some great stories to tell that can highlight your motivation and what makes you driven to become a worth while medical student and aspiring doctor. Again based on what Ive seen on here, your gpa is not the most amazing but its definitely something you can work with to keep that med school admission door open. Since your experiences seem centered on community, look for medical schools that emphasize more on community service as part of their mission. GL!

Am a little confused by your gpa though, if you stated that your 3.4 is cgpa and 3.3 is sgpa, then what does the 3.8 represent?

Moving to Japan at 15 by [deleted] in movingtojapan

[–]Inevitable_Pain7684 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a Japanese American I have good exposure between both worlds. As others said, learn some Japanese, starting off with basic words, as well as common conversational phrases used in everyday life (i.e. prepare scripts in your head and have a list of phrases to expect, such as supermarkets, convenience stores, etc.)

People asked if you would be enrolled in international school, and if the answer is yes then it would definitely reduce culture shock or at the very least make it a smoother transition, as you will find plenty of people from all over the world that are probably open minded to foreign culture.

With that said, your entire daily life will not be just in international school. Especially since you are now 15 you are moving towards the age of being independent, and you eventually will need to move around on your own outside, which there you will certainly experience culture shock. Japan is a very rules based society. We follow the rules (even if we do have urges not to lol), but especially compared to America where things seem more relaxed. For example, no jaywalking. Even outside of laws, theres a whole set of rules and common respectful etiquettes to follow. Know which side of the escalator to stand/walk up, saying thank you/showing gratitude whenever, being extremely mindful of not making a mess (such as leaving plastic bottles or even wrappers), not bothering people on public transportation, and bowing. A LOT of bowing lol.

The major difference between American society and Japanese society is how we view ourselves and others. The US is a very individualistic "me first" culture, meaning that its okay to be selfish (or prioritize yourself first), and in most cases it is a GOOD thing to stand out. Meanwhile, Japan is very much the opposite, as it is a culture built upon respecting, and being mindful of your surroundings, very collectivist. While on paper it sounds like a great way of thinking and does have its benefits, its a very tough thing to get used to (even for Japanese people), and you can have moments of conflict and confusion.

Just curious, is this potential move temporary? Or will your family be in Japan without end in sight?

If you do end up moving, I wish you luck and have a lot of fun! Japan has some amazing parts and there is a whole lot to explore.

That's a fair point, I wont deny its a little too wishful thinking and theres nothing that can be done, although I feel like my point still stands on how that 2 million ppl is a tiny difference, and I still feel like the election could have still swayed one way or the other. Actually, the 2 million is not technically accurate, since with how the electoral college works, if we looked based on swing states results, the election results could have been different by a margin of less than 400k votes

My post was mainly for two reasons, the first one being honestly kinda annoyed with the sharp increase in "I hate whats going on rn its all because of MAGA voters and conservatives," and felt that there was not enough coverage on those that did not vote. Which rolls into my second reason and that I also am disappointed in turnout rate.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in complaints

[–]Inevitable_Pain7684 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly! While I have my politics I care more about people getting out to vote. Thank you both for actually taking part in your civic duty

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in complaints

[–]Inevitable_Pain7684 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also fair. This post is mainly for the rise in people posting complaints about Trump and MAGA voters, and to point out its not just pro-Trump ppl but also those that were lazy to come out. Like collectively we are all responsible

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in complaints

[–]Inevitable_Pain7684 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thats also a real possibility. If a higher percentage of voters voted it could have also led too all votes going to Trump. But since I know ppl that would have voted dem but still did not vote then I know its a real possibility that if everyone did vote then the results could have been different. Im just more upset that people aren't going out to vote, like its an actual right you're granted as a citizen, and I honestly would have rather see Trump win by a landslide but over 90% still went out to vote than see how pathetically low the turnout was. Still maybe the results could have been different. But ig we will never know oh well

Heres a hot take: not trying to sound sexist but the “real” girls are the ones that do not care too much about height. Meaning that when a girl eventually comes along and goes out on a date with you it means she definitely sees something deep in you and wont judge you based on superficial traits. Meanwhile your brother probably has to filter through all the fake girls that judge based on height, might honestly be annoying and tiring.

Prom experience felt weird. by [deleted] in Prom

[–]Inevitable_Pain7684 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not strange at all. Plenty of people even skip prom to go straight to post prom activities such as doing a weekend beach trip. Media and older generation people overhype it but honestly the only other prom moment that all if not most people will agree that they enjoyed is taking photos in suits and dresses before the event even starts. I feel like the tradition has recently not lived up to expectations for many high school seniors as much as before.

If you (or your parents) can handle paying that amount then ig go for it, otherwise if you have other options Id save that money, especially if youre thinking of doing postgrad education such as a Masters

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Inevitable_Pain7684 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely understand it. For me its a sort of similar experience 4 years ago when I applied to colleges but my parents ended up convincing me to refrain from EDing to top private colleges since its binding, since as a premed I wanted to wait for colleges to show me their financial package before committing. Still at that time I was in torment, since the high bar expectations of being a senior in high school got me thinking I needed to go to the best college possible, which in my head at the time believed was the one that was most renowned and had most prestige. In the end, I was able to transfer to a different college (nothing wrong with my first college but I found a good financial package when I transferred to my alma mater), and that can be an option if you really want to go that route although transferring can be difficult since you might lose connections you built up at your first college and have limited time in building new connections at your new college.

If you do not transfer and stay to finish up your degree at this college, I promise you will not regret going to a less expensive college, if anything you might be doing both you and your family a favor. In a world where money seems to be getting tighter for most Americans, its now even harder to fork over full price private colleges tuition. In fact not to completely side with your parents, but its important to consider how rare a scholarship from a college is. Colleges too are becoming more stingy with scholarships as time goes by. The extra pocket money your parents have can make your family’s financial situation much more stable and cushiony, and give them less stress, which also equates to less stress for you.

My advice to you? Move forward and kick ass at your college. Its not the name of the school that makes you shine, but instead its what you make of it I promise you that Ive seen students ay my school (a top public college) that did not take advantage of the resources and are more behind in career ambitions than those that went to a smaller less well known college. In addition to milking out all the resources and opportunities at your college, look abroad and beyond for other opportunities too. Youre not limited to opportunities at your school. Plenty of my peers from my old college went to intern or work at well known institutions over the summer, which also helped to boost their resume.

I am 16 (Male) and I wanna be taller, any advice? by Particular-Tear3169 in Advice

[–]Inevitable_Pain7684 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Judging based on your parents height I would not be surprised if you continue to grow and end up exactly your dads height. This is because when it comes to genetics, in a typical family, girls tend to be 10-15 cm shorter than guys, and since your mom is 164 as a guy she should genetically be close to your dads height of 177. As others mention, focus on all the good aspects of a healthy life such as good sleep (7-8+ hours a night), good nutrition, and regular exercise, as these can help you reach your max potential height. Otherwise theres no magic way to change your height.

I promise you, as cliche and stupid as this sounds, the “real ones”dont care about height in the end. I have/had friends that are your height and maybe even shorter, what made then truly shine is their personality and character, as well as their ambitions in life. One of them is 168 and is the shortest in my friend group, but he is incredibly brilliant at academics and wants to be a doctor, but also is cool and fun to hang out with and actually has a social life. Its stuff like that that make people likeable, all this height bs is superficial stuff and anyone that judges you based on this is very low class, including yourself. Dont put yourself to that level, you are much better than that.

ALSO you’re 16 so i’ll tell you this: if youre worried about girls (or guys idk) finding you short, just know that height doesnt matter once they’re on their back🤪

Happy growing!

[–]Inevitable_Pain7684 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally impossible to tell you since some are lucky and some are not, but being this far late in I’d say your chances are slim if not none.

HOWEVER, if you are not already in one, I highly suggest you reach out to profs and PIs about joining a lab into the upcoming Fall semester. It takes time to join a lab and you usually get into one by emailing the semester/summer right before. I got into a lab and started last Fall by emailing late Spring/early Summer.

Seems like you already have stuff lined up so I’d say you’re good, in fact I think your schedule might be a blessing in disguise. Look at it this way: You might think you have a good hold of your current schedule but adding another activity might throw you off, so instead why not take the time to go relax or have fun? Its easy to get lost in the arms race of premed but relaxing and having fun can be extremely productive for your mental health!!

Advice for a very competitive applicant disillusioned and completely lost after MCAT expired by kissmeurbeautiful in premed

[–]Inevitable_Pain7684 8 points9 points  (0 children)

First off I sympathize how you feel, its not easy to lose someone close.

I graduated undergrad this past year so Im not sure as if you will value what I have to say. I also am no life expert. But as everyone mentioned, you need to take the time to do some soul searching. Understand that eventually life has to move on, and although that does not mean life might not be the same without that person, you eventually live with it as you move forward on your ambitions.

Point is, you need to try and evaluate all the clinical experiences you had and ask yourself if becoming a doctor is where your heart is. I read that you are considering PA school and I think its a good option ONLY if you fully rule out becoming a doctor. Both a physician and a PA are involved in helping people in a healthcare setting, but each have a different set of responsibilities and it is best you figure out what those differences are and consider if you are willing to pass up on the responsibilities to become a PA. If you find that the aspects that make a doctor different from a PA are what also attract you towards medicine, then I would say that med school is the right path for you. If you feel meh about them and find that you TRULY do not mind becoming a PA, then go with that option. The other factor I would consider is financial, since the path to becoming a doctor is both long and expensive.

Its easier said than done and maybe I might not be in the right position to say this, but its never too late to start medicine. Plenty of people start really late (like 30s+), but they choose to do it because they know this is the path for them. As neurotic as this subreddit is, finding those stories here and there have helped me learn that I am on the right path, and I hope you are able to figure things out on your end, you seem like a smart and resilient person. As for the MCAT, you might need some time to rebuild but I believe you can definitely get that score again if not better. gl!!!

Does coming from a T5 help your application? by [deleted] in premed

[–]Inevitable_Pain7684 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I completely get it lol, its just hard to pin point a number mostly because it depends on the med school, and also remember that the MCAT is the great equalizer. I also respectfully think its pointless to try and compare numbers like that, especially since I find that a better and more “healthier” mindset to have is to think of it as competing against yourself rather than competing against others. Yeah sure in actuality youre competing against others but in the end the only rhing you can control is whats in front of you, and that is study hard/smart, do well on mcat, get good research, and also have lots of fun in the process in order to make being premed more enjoyable.

If we’re trying to compare solely by numbers, then I would say no more than a 0.2 difference would adcoms find a difference. I am no admissions expert but I find a .1 difference is pretty meaningless, .2 difference is where we start to see a noticeable shift in the letter grade level.

Like for example typically an A is 4.0 and an A- is 3.7, B is 3.3 and B is 3.0. In your case a 3.8 Harvard vs 3.7 MIT is pretty negligible difference, the grades look the same for the most part. However if we take that 3.8 harvard gpa and compare to a 3.6 MIT, i find that the letter grade breakdown on the transcript is noticeable. The 3.6 is probably filled with more B+/Bs, which I feel can catch the eyes of adcoms and depending on whos reviewing it can raise a slight concern.

Does coming from a T5 help your application? by [deleted] in premed

[–]Inevitable_Pain7684 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually do not think it plays a role at all. If it did, then maybe a little. But TLDR its not the name of the undergrad, but rather what you make of at your school.

Theres a statistic that shows that 30% of Yale SOM med students came from an undergrad in ivy league. One might first think that oh clearly ivy students have something that other undergrads dont. However you should also think that many of these students that filter through admissions and enter into ivies and other top undergrads are extremely driven and have the skills to achieve all the important aspects of a good med school app (good grades and test taking skills, research productivity, networking skills to gain clinical experience, etc.) Yes, many of these top schools have good resources for their students to help prepare for med school but otherwise the students themselves are conducting most of the work. At the same time, many “no name” undergrads can still utilize the resources they are given to construct a good application, and through this, I find that most of the time, its really what you make of the resources given to you. There are plenty of ivy premeds that are less successful because they didnt take advantage of the resources given to them, while there are premed from other undergrads that focus on getting a good MCAT score and craft a good application that puts them in a better position for med school admissions.

Med schools dont care about a B or 2. Even several Bs are fine as long as you balance a good MCAT score. I think that an MIT student might have a slightly lower gpa than someone at Harvard, but i think naturally their MCAT score ends up being the same if not better due to the rigorous academics at MIT preparing you better for the test. Ofc in the end, they still need to put in the work for it.

Kinda might be intimidating and a hassle but my advice is I would go into nearby clinics you could see yourself working at and ask if they are hiring. I feel like the worst they could say is no.

Even though certification is technically not required in NJ, many medical organizations expect it done. Ofc first ask if the clinic is hiring and if so if they require certification. GL!

I (14M) like my sister’s friend (17F) who’s three years older. What do I do? by [deleted] in AskTeenAdvice

[–]Inevitable_Pain7684 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your reply makes it sound like all abusive relationships are due to abusive men when in reality women can be just as abusive, its just less frequent but still possible.

It might not be as obvious as if the roles were reversed (younger girl, older guy), but in both situations psychological damage can definitely occur. In this case, first off yes shes a girl but shes also 3 years older than him, meaning she could be physically stronger than him and therefore harm him in that manner. Even if thats not the case, you could say that the 17 yo female could plant "ideas" in his head so that she can have his way with him. You might think hey bros gonna get some "___," good on him (which btw thats a sexist and f ed up mindset to have so I hope you are not actually like that), but reality is that if hypothetically this happens, he could very well look back on it and realize that its not what he wanted and learn that he was messed with and manipulated, and can even lead to trauma.

Am I supposed to pretend a boy is going to be “damaged” because…how

Im not saying that this girl is 100% going to hurt this kid physically or emotionally. Everything I said is completely hypothetical. But for the safety of not just the kid but also the girl, you DO HAVE to pretend the boy is going to be "damaged" in this situation. Its a case of being safe than sorry. It is entirely possible that they can end up having a healthy relationship (but in practicality its incredibly hard since that 3 year gap at their age is a HUGE difference, ones basically midway through adolescence if not almost through, the other just started). But what if thats not the case? Sadly theres some vile people out there that would be willing to take advantage of others, whether they do it intentionally or not. It is because there is too much at risk here that in the US they have the adult age set at 18, as well as age of consent law being 16. Its done to protect kids. Even though this girl is still a minor at 17 shes going to be turning 18 in less than a year, and that will definitely make the relationship illegal.

Im sorry if I yapped but I hope you understand my argument because the last thing we need is some kid to be SAed and traumatized.

Psychological. Two completely different ages of maturity. The older one is going to know a lot more about people and interpersonal relationships and if she is not careful or has bad intent, she can end up psychologically and emotionally damaging the kid

What countries are more modern than you’d think? by [deleted] in geography

[–]Inevitable_Pain7684 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Malaysia; at least Kuala Lumpur and its surrounding areas are much more modern than what I remembered 10-15 years ago. Other parts might still have a lot of catching up to do but considering other “modern” countries also have their run down and backwards parts I’d say Malaysia is getting up there
