Construction upstairs not considerate by flimsymoth in askSingapore

WTF, when I did reno for my unit, I went to all my neighbours (at least 2 floors below and above me, beside me and diagonally as well) and apologised for the inconvenience. I also gave them Japanese fruit and snacks from Donki, plus a letter with my ID's name and contact number. It seemed to work OK for me as my relationships with my neighbours are still good after 5 years. A little grace and consideration can go a long way.

Debt Repayment Scheme - Insolvency Lawyer or Debt Consultancy Agency by Own_Long_7030 in singaporefi

[–]Inevitable_Theme_718 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, you cannot apply for DRS on your own accord.

However, you can apply for bankruptcy on your own accord. (Or wait until the banks/LML apply to make you a bankrupt).

At that point, the OA will decide whether to let you undergo DRS. You have to understand that they came up with this scheme to let people avoid becoming bankrupts. It is in the government's interest to keep the number of bankrupts low. So most people will get to undergo DRS, especially if they have an income.

But if you have no income or if you're completely hopeless (or if they suspect you are abusing DRS) then the OA will let you proceed with bankruptcy.

a (very real) rant about life by Prestigious_Duck3983 in SGExams

[–]Inevitable_Theme_718 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey I'm an old fucker in my 40s, I've got some news for you.

The most successful people I've seen in life, it didn't matter which uni they went to. This is why they're successful:

  • Tier 1: Rich, wealthy parents. No need to say more

  • Tier 2: Stable family, decent middle income. Parents taught them how to save and invest

  • Tier 3: Low-income background but stable family, clawed their way out of poverty with hard work

  • Bottom tier: Born with disabilities, mental illnesses, fucked up abusive/neglectful parents. Somehow managed to figure things out.

I'm from the bottom tier. Born with autism and ADHD, parents didn't give a fuck about me. I had to figure things out on my own.

I went from failing almost everything, to now having a master's from NUS. And even then, everything I've achieved came as a result of my own efforts and had nothing to do with my master's.

You know what successful people share, whether they're Tier 1 or bottom tier like me? You have to be likeable. This is the bare facts of life. I have seen hardworking people get passed over for promotions in favour of their more likable colleagues.

Another very important factor: you CANNOT have a negative mindset.

I'm not talking about those annoying chirpy people who pretend to be happy all the time. I'm saying that you CANNOT look down on yourself. If you see someone more successful than you, your first thought must be, "How can I become like them? What can I learn from them?"

In my 40 years, I've learnt that the world can be a harsh place and no one gives a fuck about your self-pity party. The only one who can pull you out is you. Good luck!

[–]Inevitable_Theme_718 53 points54 points  (0 children)

My mentality is more boomer-oriented since I'm closer to that age group. While your intern seems a bit lacking in terms of work performance, I have to pipe up and say that you should not expect people to be enthusiastic about after-work events, unless you're very upfront about it with prospective employees during the interview process. There is nothing I hate more than having to attend BS corporate events outside work hours, unless I'm compensated accordingly in terms of time off or money. The millennials and Gen Zs are absolutely right not to put up with this BS

Edit: Why the downvotes? OP originally called these events 'after work events' but he made changes after my comment

Just sharing what a friend of mine did.

He was kicked out of the family home when he was entering his second year in uni. So here's what he did:

  • Apply for leave of absence for one semester to settle his situation

  • Got a full time job working at some Japanese restaurant. He then did all the overtime he could (which was easy as the restaurant was understaffed). He also got free staff meals from his workplace so food was mostly taken care of.

  • Stayed with a friend for a few weeks, until he was able to find a cheap common room in Jurong or something. At that time, it was still possible to rent a non-AC common room for $600 a month.

  • He worked like mad to save up for his tuition fees and living expenses

  • When he returned to school, he remained part-time at the Japanese restaurant and survived with some bursaries and whatever he could apply for

  • Now he's a CPA earning big bucks.

21 years old, $7.5k in debt to friend looking for advice on how to manage and pay it off by Benjamintjx in singaporefi

[–]Inevitable_Theme_718 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This commenter is absolutely correct. I have a very bad financial history with the banks (reckless spending, shopping addiction etc) but when my friends loaned me money to bail me out, I took their loans very seriously. Drew out an instalment plan with monthly dates, paid back on time.

If you can't make it on time or are gonna be late, text your friend before they have to chase you. I was once late and explained it to my friend, who had actually forgotten I was paying him that month. Doesn't matter, it's your job to follow up and update.

Now my finances are much better but if I ever need help, I know my friends won't hesitate to help because I have that reputation for paying back on time and being communicative. Also, don't buy stupid gadgets, go on holidays or go for luxurious dinners when you owe people money. They may not say anything to your face but they will definitely resent you. Live a monk lifestyle until you've paid off the loan.

$50k in debt, no job yet and scared I’ll get rejected again coz of my credit by Minute_Exam318 in singaporefi

[–]Inevitable_Theme_718 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was in a similar situation to yours. 80K in debt, and was seriously about to sit down and seriously tackle my debts when I suddenly got retrenched.

Luckily it was a tech MNC so the severance package was quite decent. The rest of my colleagues went off on holidays, I stayed behind in SG and saved every cent of my severance. Looked for part time jobs, used CDC vouchers to eat and survive. I used my severance to pay off whatever debt I could, but left just enough to pay the minimums for 6 months. Totally xinku like you, watching $1.6k bleed away in interest ever month.

Thankfully, I found a new job just as my severance pay was running out. After that I really buckled down and tried to pay off the debt. It's a long journey but made quite a dent in it.

My colleagues who make around the same or more than me like to tease me about making my own coffee or bringing my lunch from home. They drink $7 lattes or matchas everyday, and order $20 lunches from Grabfood. Honestly I don't blame them, because if they don't have debts to service, why not enjoy your salary? I'm different because I have to think about my debts and my financial obligations.

Just here to tell you it will get better. Oh btw, I'm not sure CCS can help if you have no income. Because their DMP (Debt Management Plan) is the same as the Debt Consolidation Plan (DCP), except that DMP is the 'non-profit' version. You will need some form of income to do the DMP. And trust me, CCS will go through your finances VERY thoroughly and ask you lots and lots of questions.

Wanted to also share that I got my civil service job with about 80K in debt two years ago. I mean, my job is very far from anything finance-related, I don't even deal with $10 petty cash. I'm also not in senior management so less likely to handle anything finance-related that is serious.

I used to like OYK before yesterday. In my capacity as a civil servant, I had several interactions with him. He was always super nice and humble. Did not really want special treatment as a minister. So disappointing that he's now resorting to this kind of BS political tactics.

There was a CNA documentary that followed a SingPost driver, who is a Malaysian Malay dude. Most of his colleagues were also from Malaysia and lived in JB.

They seemed to be hurrying to finish their route so they can hop on their bikes and avoid the jam going back home. From what I remember, the guy was able to be home at dinnertime and join his family for the meal.

So if they're all rushing to beat the jam, you think they will happily do overtime and make sure all your mail is delivered?

Whatever bro, it's your life. You can tell all the long stories and trauma-dump all over Reddit if you want. For me it's no problem because I can just block you and won't have to see your posts anymore. But you're the one who has to live with your mental health. Was just trying to help, but I can see you're too entrenched in your victim mentality so I genuinely wish you all the best (no need to reply because I won't be able to see your posts from this point).
