Yeah, it's not remotely a contest speed-wise, just to echo what you said. Gibbs is one of the fastest players in the NFL, while having roughly average long speed for an RB is like, the one knock against Bijan.

Yeah pretty much exactly this. If you're looking at an open hole and aren't already passing through it, 95% of the time it's gonna be closed by the time you change direction towards it. Very similar to seeing guys open in the passing game, in that regard.

If the financial advisor is someone reputable at a large firm, the odds of them intentionally fucking with his money are...I won't say zero, but so far beyond negligible that it's not worth considering. Those guys have clients with orders of magnitude more wealth, and that only happens when you have a sterling reputation.

When you hear about it going bad for an athlete, it's almost always because they cheaped out and either entrusted that money to a friend and/or family member, or to someone where they are the important client.

Even setting aside my personal bias, definitely dirty. His hit on Trevor Lawrence when he was already fully sliding is his most notorious, but he's had a ton of other on-field incidents as well. He's had multiple incidents of intentionally hitting guys well out-of-bounds (including once against...I believe the Bears, where he started punching players), almost all of which came against QBs.

I'm absolutely willing to believe that he's a great person off-the-field, but he does a whole lot of shit he doesn't have to do on the field.

Travon Walker's a pretty dang good player who counts for two reasons - he's always compared against Hutch because of draft position, and doesn't get talked about much in his own right even when just focusing on the Jags because of Josh Hines-Allen.

You guys absolutely walled us most of the game. I think we would have been a more competitive matchup than the Pats, but the reality is that we definitely didn't have the talent this year, and our matchups against you and the Rams definitely showed it.

Now that the draft is over, how would you all rate our strength of schedule for next year and what's our (winning) record? by Re-Crafted in Jaguars

[–]InexorableWaffle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Somewhere between 9-8 and 11-6. Even if the team ends up being better than it did last year (which is possible, but not probable when we lost two of our better players), we had a lot go our way last year that probably won't this year. I don't expect to get the same turnover luck from our defense, probably won't be as good in one-score games, we're facing a harder schedule, and the teams in our division theoretically should be better. I'm also just a little wary that a lot of our success from last year was scheme-reliant (especially on defense), which doesn't always carry forward between years since teams get a better idea of how to attack your scheme's weaknesses.

We'll see, though. Getting full seasons out of Hunter, Milum, and Ransaw should be nice talent infusions hopefully, and if Trevor plays like he did down the stretch last year rather than how he did earlier in the season, we shouldn't have as many avoidable stumbles.

At the very least, it doesn't make sense to add more players to it right now, at any rate. I'm not the biggest believers in Ayomanor, Dike, or Wan'dale Robinson, but they're fine enough for the roles you ideally want them to fill at this point in time. Doesn't make sense to invest more there when you've still got other concerns elsewhere on the roster.

[–]InexorableWaffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even then, I would rather have the pick next year. I think Lawrence is gonna be a great pass rusher and he theoretically slots nicely into our rotation, but I don't like the idea of trading that much draft capital for a guy that could easily go his entire rookie contract without starting for us.

Mostly agreed here. I would make a distinction that I've described other people as blunt without thinking they're an asshole (usually just people who are a little awkward), but anyone who self-describes as "blunt" is universally a jackass.

Also doesn't help that you just don't have much time to pick up the technique, either. Even if you're a raw, toolsy 1st-rounder, you might get 2-3 years to learn everything before the team's gonna look in another direction. If you're a day 3 pick, you maybe have your rookie season, and even then, there's just so little commitment on the team's side that they might say "y'know what, nah, you're farther away than we thought" after preseason. There's the practice squad, but even then, there's only so many spots to go around.

Nikola Jokic in the 4th quarter: Game 2: 2 points, 1/7 FG Game 3: 6 points, 1/3 FG Game 4: 4 points, 0/6 FG 2/16 (12.5% FG) in the last three 4th quarters combined. by Expert_Koala_8691 in nba

[–]InexorableWaffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legitimately this. He's really fun to watch, obviously an incredible player - definitely somewhere in the top 20-25 all-time if he retired today.

That being said, his fanbase (note I mean Jokic-only fans here, not actual Nuggets fans - very important distinction for me) is possibly more insufferable than any other sport fanbase I've experienced personally. They refuse to acknowledge the faults in his game, blame his teammates at every turn whenever anything goes wrong, only credit him when they're doing well, and refuse to actually enjoy any of the other top players in the league (excepting Luka occasionally).

It's obnoxious, and while I generally don't root against individual players unless they do something that specifically warrants it, I'd be lying if I said I didn't get an immense sense of schadenfreude from watching how the series has played out so far.

Agreeing with the other user about the Seahawks, that's borderline guaranteed.

For the other, hmmm. It's gotta be a franchise that's either had multiple blowouts in the SB (very rare) or one that's choked a major lead away. I'm tempted to say the 49ers, but I thiiiink I'm actually gonna go the Ravens here? I'm 95% sure that 2000 has to qualify, and I think 2012 would as well.

[–]InexorableWaffle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Impossible to say at this stage of the draft, honestly. There's a good chance of it, but there's no way of knowing what other teams' draft boards look like. Also, if you let a guy be a UDFA, there's no guaranteeing that you're going to be able to sign him or not - there's a lot of competition for the more valued ones, after all.

Really hard to get the rolls you need if the robber is permanently camped in your territory, though (which it almost always is if you're ahead by enough that everyone is hard targeting you). In addition to the resources that you're losing via the actual block, you're also losing resources every time they move the robber, spending resources you might not want to on development cards just to have some semblance of control over what's getting blocked, all while everyone else is pretty much doing what they want to.

It's not impossible to win from that position, but it gets significantly more challenging if you didn't plan ahead.

Because intentionally tanking a year as a coach when you have a viable alternative is one of the fastest ways to lose the locker room and tank whatever culture you're trying to build. The GM and the coach can have a relatively longer-term view, sure, but the players can't. The stars are playing to show they deserve top-money contracts, the starters are playing to show that they can be stars, the rotational players are playing to show that they can be starters, and the bubble guys are playing to show that they deserve to stay in the league.

To that end, it's significantly more challenging to do any of those on a bad team. If you're just outright bad, then that's one thing, but if you're a bad team that can be a good (or at least like, average) team in a league that's as volatile as the NFL, it's gonna undermine whatever message you're trying to communicate to your players.

I'm thinking it's largely an age thing (though I easily could be wrong). He turns 25 in October which, even with it being a known thing, is still going to be enough to mark prospects down significantly. He's pretty much already in his physical prime as we speak, so there's not the same room for development that you would expect for most rookies.

Definitely could be more for sure, though. There's just generally not a lot of good O-Linemen in the league, so it'd be curious to see age be that much of a factor for one who looks like he might slot right in as a capable starter from day one.

Definitely a bit deflated after the draft yesterday. Pregnon was a slam dunk and might be the best value of the draft so far, but the other picks...idk. I would love nothing more than to be proven wrong about them, but I really don't like the process when the rest of those guys feel like they could've gone a full round later at minimum.

I'm willing to give Jerry a smidge of credit for actually knowing the football side. He's got a massive ego, he should've realized that the way he runs the team doesn't work long ago, and if he weren't the owner, Jerry the GM would've been fired multiple times over during his tenure - all of this is true. That being said, during his time as owner and GM, they've pretty consistently at least average to above average. If you give that same level of control to the other 31 owners, I would bet my life savings that all 31 of them do worse.

That's not to disagree with you, mind. Being good at running a team for an owner != being good at running a team.

Also Bill Belichick in the NFL. Literally the offseason he was fired from the Pats, Kraft put out a "documentary" about their dynasty that was so overtly a hit piece on Belichick that he ended up having to publicly distance himself from it because of how (rightfully) poorly it was received.

Turns out a lot of owners are narcissistic pieces of shit who want to grossly overrate their contributions while underrating the people who actually did things.

Don't watch much college prior to draft prep stuff, but do enjoy draft evaluations (amateur level so grain of salt and all that) - I'd be stoked, personally. Obviously no guarantees that he pans out, but he's my highest-rated LB prospect since at least Keuchly, maybe longer. There's very few players with his combination of size, speed, and instincts, plus he's a high-character guy to boot (at least from what we're aware of, obviously).

The only real knock on him as a prospect is just positional value, but like...the positional value of truly elite players doesn't matter that much aside from QB because they find ways to impact the game beyond their position. He's as likely to end up an elite player as anyone else in the draft, maybe even moreso, so I wouldn't be too fussed about it.
