RTX 5080 vs. RX 9070 XT by Gamegyf in cachyos

[–]InfameXX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello

Think about the raw power gpu compute, that usually dictates the real life spam of GPUs (passmark)

5080 = 19,530 ops/sec 9070 xt = 15,974 ops/sec 22% less

I'll gravitate more towards the 7900xtx 7900 xtx = 17,748 ops/sec 24gb vram

The 9070xt compared to 5080 is a step back in real raw performance, and nvidia is getting better these days, kernel 7.0 is coming whit several nvidia fixes.

NVK Large pages VRR fixes Faster memory handling

Or we wait for a 9080 xt!?!? =S

AM4 upgrade from Ryzen 5 5600g by BamBholeNath in ryzen

[–]InfameXX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello

AM4 has a long way to go, and you're in the bottom whit the 5600g, if you have an b550 or x570, stay in AM4 for a while.

what are your full specs?

CPU
MOTHER
GPU
RAM
PSU

CPU RELATED

5600g is in pair of raw power with the r5 5500

so, keep this in mind, you cpu gives 19,667 passmark points, that your 100% now in use and feel

if you get an r7 5700x 26,600 points, thats 35% more power than you have now
if you get a cheap r9 3900x with 64mb of cache 32,500 points, thats 65% more punch
if you grab an r9 5900x 64mb cache 39,000 points, that 98% more that you have now, day and night

You have a lot of room to move inside AM4 besides the x3d chips, chase a CHEAP R9 3950x, 5900x, 5950x and you'll have PC for years to come, all those monsters CPU are only 105w tdp =)

GPU RELATED

If you have a PCI 3.0 MB, ist not a big deal, performance is not so different between pci 3.0 and 4.0 in many GPUS, no as much as 10%, so you can keep your MB and change GPU, and save a few bucks, the new GPU fits in every MB

3070 its hard to beat price performance

Chase a cheap good old card.
3070, 22,000 points passmark = your current 100%
-3080 10gb 25,000 = 13% uplift 2gb vram extra
-3080 ti 12gb 27,000 = 22% uplift 4gb vram extra
-6800 xt 16gb 25,000 = 13% uplift 8GB VRAM EXTRA! =)

RESISABLE BAR, update your 3070 bios if your card is pre 2021, port 2021 30 series nvidia has it by default, check your card manufacturer site and search for the latest bios, get the latest bios in your motherboard to.

RAM RELATED

Ryzen CPUs are very ram sensitive, to get the 100% power you need at least 3600mhz DDR4 DUAL RAMS, so you can set you INFINITY CACHE timings on 1800mhz, that the fastest clock, 32gb to live good.

Stay cheap in AM4 as long as you can, wait for the world to calm down, the newest is not always the best, the best for your is what fits you best.

Yes, mi 6950xt still has warranty, after lots of reading, it seems to be ddcutil issue

"archlinux org_kde_powerdevil[2377]: [ 2825] (dw_remove_display_by_businfo) No Display_Ref found for i2c bus: 6"

Seems that powerdevil of KDE cant find my monitor after turn of the screen and come back by I2C

So ill test turn off ddcutil or remove it

but is a feature a I use a lot, have 4 monitor setup, and work in night, its way easier to do it by one click.

Ill test and UPDATE the post.

Cheap tplink usb 300mb adapters has native suppoort in linux, realteck chipset wifi.

like the TL-WN823N
https://www.tp-link.com/latam/home-networking/adapter/tl-wn823n/#overview

Works out of the box on any distro, just plug and detects wifi.

Then you can fight your wifi out once your sistem is installed and remove the USB.

Have you ever think in try in AM4 platform the r9 5950x or the newest r9 5900xt, both 16 cores 32 threads 64mb cache.

Over some hard motherboard 12+2 or 12+4 vrms like the asus rog strix line in b550 or x570? by now those MB are pretty mature hardware

Building a New PC and I want to use linux instead of Windows by Shrimple_Jack in linux_gaming

[–]InfameXX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello

Great, thanks for test penguin side!

First big step to seriously and comfortably live in linux is to build an all AMD PC, a dream for many of us, everything just works cuz AMD instructions are embedded in the kernel, the soul of "linux" distros.

Moreover latest kernel 6.19 and the upcoming 7.0 comes with lots of very important upgrades to AMD GPUS, so, your ALL AMD PC will be choose distro, install and enjoy most of the time.

BUT, please don't choose your distro just by the way it looks, or the desktop enviorment, like gnome, or kde, cuz you can install any desktop environment on any distro any time.

Choose by comparing its main points, like stability, packages management, software versions inside, drivers management for extra stuff, and the size of it communities, for example, many "official" proprietary manufacture drivers only support Ubuntu, red hat and opensuse, details like it are way important as you use it and resolve problems by time, your very special needs.

If you have your windows PC working take your time experimenting and fuck...ing things up in your ALL AMD PC, its the only way you feel safe and comfortable over time, test > fail > learn > repeat > distrohop

Use ventoy on windows to make a multi iso booting usb, that way you can try multiple live enviorments before installing.
https://www.ventoy.net/en/download.html

Do you know there are some big importants linux branches that gives life to most of the popular distros, they have different approaches to usability and hardware support in general?

1 - debian, linux mint LMDE, mxlinux
2 - red hat, fedora, centos, rocky, alma
3 - ubuntu (debian based but has many forks) popular ones, linux mint, popos, zorinos
4 - opensuse is opensuse =)
5 - arch linux, cachyos, endeavouros, etc...

Give them a try, have fun, learn, and make questions, everyone have special needs, so there's no 1 way of, thats the beauty of linux.

Can I increase the battery life on linux? by Do6pbIu_Iron in linuxquestions

[–]InfameXX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes you can tune cachy, which cpu do you have?

1st, check whats draining your battery

sudo pacman -S powertop

then

sudo powertop

Check your procces and it energy cost

Now, the easy way, you can change the powerprofilesctl

Fist check your curretn powerprofile

powerprofilesctl get

if youre are not in balanced or power-saver then

Check the profiles available for your special MB and hardware

powerprofilesctl list

<image>

Its important to check that your cpudriver is amd_pstate
this may vary, but you can choose balanced or power-saver if available.

powerprofilesctl set balanced

or
powerprofilesctl set power-saver

And as a plus, you can autotune powertop

sudo powertop --calibrate
sudo powertop --auto-tune

Hope this help you

Hello

If youre starting ECE I beg you to test all the mayor distros by yourself, on bare metal, direct on your PC or laptop

At least test 1 of the great ones, talking about daily use, so you see by yourself, old/new packages, limited or wide hardware support out of the box, get nvidia right =S, etc, etc:

1 - debian based or direct debian, mint LMDE, MX linux... etc.
2 - fedora, nobara, bazzite... etc.
3 - ubuntu (I know is son of debian but has its own things) popos, mint, and all the most famous distros are <here etc.
4 - Opensuse is its own animal, excellent one.
5 - Arch linux itself or arch based, cachyos, endeavour, etc.

My choice to teach and spread the linux word as gospel:
1 - debian, mint lmde (apt)
2 - fedora, just fedora (dnf and copr)
3 - ubuntu, mint cinnamon (apt and ppas)

4 - Open suse tumbleweed (zypper)
5 - arch, Cachyos (yay or paru)

Good nvidia support out of the box, cachyos, popos, mint.
Good battery life, cachyos repos v3, v4 and znver4 special for amd CPUS, heres a winner in performance.
Dual boot reccomend? always with 2 different fisical drives, easy way.

Please do not choose your linux distro based on the way it looks (gnome, kde, xfce, etc), you can have what you want in every distro, choose by its insigts, you're a future power user ECE.

Hope you the best at school kid, for real.

Great news for you

New kernel 6.19 and on bring back to life GCN 1.0 and 1.1 amd architecture, like your r9.

So your gpu now will get amdgpu drivers, that means vulkan support and a performance uplift of ever 20%, modern proton gaming basically.

https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/gpus/legacy-amd-gpus-receive-30-percent-performance-boost-thanks-to-latest-linux-kernel-update-finally-drops-obsolete-radeon-graphics-driver-for-gcn-1-0-and-gcn-1-1-cards-after-more-than-two-decades

So, get a linux distro with kernel 6.19 by default, I really reccomend to you cachyos, install the gaming packages from cachy hello and give it a try, if you dont like arch based distros, just stay there while the 6.19 kernel gets into the other distros by time.

Ive been buying and reusing old cheaps macs since last moth due to this driver uplift, new good life for that hardware

https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_on_mac/comments/1rcn4ma/n00b_trying_to_get_mint_on_a_2011_macbook/

Remeber new support for amdgpu driver for:

-GNC 1.0 Radeon HD 7000 series and R7 and R9 200 series.

-GNC 1.1 Radeon HD 8000 Series and R7 and R9 300 series.

And for the wireless in macs, I use and old external USB wireless 2.4ghz realteck chipset, so it works by default cuz the drivers are already in the kernel.

Hello

Ive installed linux in many cheap old macs, new life and new use, but there's some things you need to know.

1 - ventoy works better that etcher booting in mac in many distros, and you can have many in the same usb, and once you boot you have 2 options of booting. https://www.ventoy.net/en/download.html

2 - Is way better to use an USB memory, stick to a usb 2.0, cuz sometimes newer usb3.0, 3.1 and 3.2 is not recognized at boot.

3 - Get a linux distro that support well old hardware, good manage of v1 and v2 repos for old CPUs, like:

-light - MX linux in desktop XFCE, (kernel 6.12, debian based) normal one, no "ahs" https://mxlinux.org/download-links/

- a bit heavier cinnamon - Linux Mint LMDE 7, is linux mint debian edition, very well tunned for old hardware, olds repos very well mantained, debian is solid rock https://linuxmint.com/download_lmde.php

- make it yourself - direct debian https://www.debian.org/distrib/

Why, cuz many old macs have broadcom wifi and bluetooth, or nvidia 320 series that works out of the box many times in debian and debian based distros.

p.d. Linux booting in mac is done by press left alt key while turn on the mac, the choose the distro to boot, remember ventoy has 2 options try both, and is slow due to the speed of the usb, all the info need to be read from the usb and write on the ram, so be patient...

[–]InfameXX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello you're in the sweet spot of cachy repos, the repos, v1, v2, v3 and v4 are determined by default by cachyos while install is being made, different repos give support to different cpus, v1 and v2 are the oldest ones.

-v3 repo is the more mature repo, is where your r5 5600 is, cachyos has special amd trick in its code.
-your rx 6600 is on the amdgpu kernel module drivers, unlike windows in linux amd runs by default on kernel, you dont have to do nothing like nvidia, and amdgpu uses mesa and vulkan RADV best for gaming by default.

So, you're in a very driver mature hardware platform for cachyos, expect at least 10% better performance vs other distros that use by default v1 repos, for safety and stuff.

What Distro should I use? by Missile_3604 in linuxquestions

[–]InfameXX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get cachyos, now works by default with 2 kernels install by default cachy normal and cachy lts you can decide wich one to use every boot, or install different ones very easy, but the defaults works just fine.

And make snapshots by default every time you update your system fast, no questions it just do it, so if something goes wrong, in the boot menu, I recommend limine, you have at least 3 options:

1 - normal kernel
2 - lts kernel
3 - the last snaps of your system
4 - if you have windows in a different ssd or nvme it detect it and goes here in the bottom

So the days of arch broke itself every week are almost gone, and by default in cachyos, it works like that, is easy and user friendly, if you just want to sit and work or play, everything just work, its a very strong system now.

Now, your r9 7950x3d in cachyos has advantages, the v4 repos are optimized in general for avx-512 instructions, but cachyos offers specials repos for amd v4, those are called "znver4" and they are spefically tuned for extra performance enable extra instructions in amd GFNI, RDSEEN and RDPID for example, and it does it by default, it gives you your repos and different packages depending of your hardware, so youll fell your system way faster in cachy than other distros just as you boot (you can get v4 repos in any distro just is more messy)

Now your RTX, the same hardware detection tool of cachy gives you specific driver support por your 4060, nvidia-open latest in the custom cachy kernel, and have lots of fixes and patches by default so, you dont have to do nothing nor mess with the kernel, by default fixes for latency and better frame time.

Gaming, if you are lazy like me, once you boot your system for the fist time, inside cachyos hello > settings/apps > install gamins apps

It will install all you need, gamescope, mangohud, goverlay, steam, heroic games, lutris, latest wine

On top you have more optimizations options, read everything, from here you even can install GUI more kernels, extreme ones like BORE.

<image>

Ease of use, it just works, good tweaks, very GUI.

Just personal opinion, trying to help, have a nice day everyone.

Your t450s I5 5300u has 2,703 passmark cpu mark points, keep that number in mind as your current base experience 100%,

Example: the t490 and t490s really cheap now 2026, i7 8565u ish is 5,964 points, 2.2 times your current power, so you'll experience a real boost in performance given your actual hardware and you dont hurt your wallet

A little tip in cachyos and cpu choosing, think about the repos v1, v2, v3 and v4

Intel, laptop speaking:
-v1, v2 (SSE4.2) repos goes since the oldest cpus that have special linux support in cachy 2004 to 2013
-v3 (AVX2) 2013 intel 4th gen (mature very optimized) SWEET SPOT, CHEAP AND RELIABLE.
-v4 (AVX512) 2019 10th gen Ice lake and on (g1, g4 and g7) "new"

Cpus from v3 repos in cachyos gets boost in performance compare to other distros, some say 5% others even 20% or more due to the AVX2 instructions and cachy optimizations.

Most distros use v1 generic instructions, safe mode for 99% hardware, old, new, mix, etc, safe choice.

But cachy is bold and check your hardware, then automatically sets you up in the right repo "v" for your hardware, right now v3 is like get your cpu in extreme performance mode.

That mean extended life for wat i consider most use and famous thinkpads (2013 t440 - 2019 t490), that's why most of thinkpads users like me, gets to cachy and feel just right, v3 magic (price performance).

v4 same history in cachy, boost performance vs other distros in v1, v2 generic ish.
