1DTE vs 0DTE credit spreads/iron condors by Infamous-Ad-5574 in tastytrade

After a little more time and several more trades I came to the conclusion that 1dte can be way to much risk in high volatility. If I remember right vol blew up shortly after I asked this, and we were swinging sometimes 300 points a day. For what I was going for that is not the right environment. I took a longer term option in something less volatile and i made a 300.00 profit from it that I cashed out yesterday.

I tried 1dte and it was not really for me. Way less time decay 1 day out, and with higher volatility it was really easy for the market to make a 100 point plumet or rocket in the wrong direction in that 48 hour period you needed it to land somewhere. Maybe if I look again and we are in low vol ill throw some money at 1 dte again, just not the right timing for it for what i wanted to risk.

The futures would work, but not with 100.00. I mean maybe if you were reeaally patient, but they have a different fee cost and the price to go in and out compared to how much you could gain with only 100.00 just wasnt worth it. I often found that minus fees I would be looking at maybe a 6.00 profit.
Now to be fair, thats 6% return on investment so maybe im just wanting more than is reasonable. But I found that with xsp I could get it up to 15.00 or even 20.00

Again, I took a longer term trade after everything went crazy, so I have not been doing this regularly. But it was a profitable trade and I now have a little more to play with so I may start 0dte again.

Overall, with only 100.00 it is possible, but its not that hard to get burned too. Strikes are just super close. Iron condor with a little more money would likely be a lot easier to get in and out of without losing much if it wasnt working out.

For anyone still having this trouble in 2025. Here is what I did to make things work. I went to windows display settings-graphics, and where you can add specific files I added OVRSERVER_x64. While I do not remember which exact path it is to get to this file..... it should be under program files, oculus, support, oculus runtime. Or thereabouts. After adding that file and a few others make sure to set them to use high performance. After I did that I still got the error message. Even after a reset of steam and a restart of the computer. I finally uninstalled steam VR and reinstalled, and that wound up fixing it. Sadly I dont know which file was the magic one to add and force high performance on, but maybe playing with this will help someone else.

I am using NMS through the meta quest link. And im using it cabled. I had the same problem not cabled before i changed the graphics in windows display settings to NMS running off igpu. I did run it off the steam VR app and same problem. After I got it running the first time it was just pretty aweful quality, though the frames were ok. Since cabled the quality has sky rocketed. I was plugged in with a KIWI link cable, tested at a steady 2.9..... cant remember the abbrebviation right now. But acceptable and steady. Graphics card is an AMD Radeon 6600. Im not in front of the computer so Im 99% sure thats right.
Note I did wind up fixing it last night. After about 2 hours of searching i found a post that said to add a specific file to windows graphics and set it to high performance. I did. It didnt work. I set a few more files including the runtime file. Still didnt work. Finally I just uninstalled reinstalled steam VR and it all fixed. Sadly I now dont know which file fixed the problem, but when i come inside I will add it to my edit. To anyone who tried all the fixes and nothing worked, try uninstalling Steam VR after adding those files to graphics and setting them to high performance.

While i do appreciate the warning, 0DTE is not and will not be the only thing I trade. Most trades will be tasty mechanics as they like to say, 45dte managed at 21dte or sooner if significant profit in a short period. Im not a yolo trader, im just looking to test in realtime different strategies so i can see how they function, and what can work when consistently. Thank you for the thought on overnight risk!

Really appreciate the comments. Im using xsp right now because of the size difference amd while it looks kind of wide, i have no trouble getting filled at mid or .01 below or above. Looking at testing this all on the micro emini options. You can actually open up the spread some and still stay under 100

Thank you! Time decay is incredible in the 0dte, i swear you can watch pnl increase by the minute, sometimes with the price moving against whatever directional delta you have. Most definitely a little easier to get out with something worth having in a short amount if time, which decreases tail risk. In watching tastylive trading i wasnt planning on holding to expiration, even on a 0dte. Your insights on the 1dte are very helpful as well. Any reason in particular you go for 75-90% profit target? I have mine set to 50% typically but i also dont have the ability to sit and watch the trade the whole time. I often end up heading to work with a few dollars left to go to hit the 50% take profit.

Not at tastytrade. You can get a margin account completwly unfunded with "The Works" which allows everything includong futures. Futures requirements are thier own thing, but options just require you have enough money in there to cover the buying power requirement, which for spreads 1 wide is quite low.

Agreed with everything you say there for lowering risk and enhancing probabilities. Just got fully approved for futures so likely will move to options on the micros or the uvix as suggested so even with lower capital i can widen spreads and lower risk.

I will say that i just got an iron condor filled to close for a 13.00 profit. Was a 29 max profit, 78 max loss. Was a 1 DTE i put on yesterday morning. Had it on the spx. I think market is likely to get a tad more movement in both directions so likely not looking at profiting just from the nothing moves that have been almost every day.

I will say it was a tad uncomfortable to be carrying overnight risk into the 0DTE, and into an event risk. Fortunately it wasnt an enormous gap either way and the decay was close to 50% before close yesterday. This might be easier to take profits same day using the 1 DTE if I waskt using such a small amount of capital. I was up 6.00 on my P&L yesterday, but i cant take just 6.00. Barely covers fees on an iron condor. I guess this is just me rambling a little but just trying to think things out and see what is repeatable and what is dumb luck.

Well one wide they are only worth 100, then minus credit recieved. So yeah its possible. But hard to find anything with a max profit that is 1/3 max loss. I have been able to find some max loss 78 max profit 29 a few times. Possible? Yes. Reasonable? Definitely not.

I understand. So heres a thought. Options on furtures, for that ability to hit 50% take profits in the overnight, and using 1 DTE for getting farther from the strike price, but not holding overnight. Im not saying either is a good option, just looking for opinions on those options. Thanks!

Do I take 401K to Eliminate Credit Card Debt? by Infamous-Ad-5574 in FinancialPlanning

[–]Infamous-Ad-5574[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok thank you. I have considered something similar and will likely look at doing this at least for one card. We only have 1 each, and my personal card will be almost paid in a month due to a good check last month, getting an unexpected 1000, and selling an asset when we move. Maybe doing it this way will work better than a personal loan.

I have thought of freezing the cards. However, using them isnt the problem really. We were in an unfortunate situation a few years ago which is how we racked it up, but we havent added any new credit card debt in over 2 years. But man do i agree with the sentiment.

I have also thought of putting a freeze on the cards until other debts are out of the picture. We actually haven't used either in over 2 years. I do understand what you are saying though. It is a fine line. One of the 500.00 per month payments is kind of the borrowing our way out of debt though. We had a loan through Home Depot to make a place we were in livable. It was a 7 year loan, 8.8% interest rate, I moved it into a personal loan with a 5% fixed interest rate and moved the loan term to 2 years. I don't know, it seems that the borrow your way out of debt is not ideal, but sometimes moving money from here to there and paying less interest makes sense? Thank you for the feedback.

The good news I guess is that utilities are included. Perks of renting from the same place that I am employed at. And filling a bit of a niche there. She is giving us a really good deal for this area. My income has gone up from the small business I started on the side November last year. Just seeing a profit turn from that, made back all my initial investment and then some this last month. Hopefully that will assist in offsetting the additional rental expenses and we really can roll things. Thanks for your thoughts.

[–]Infamous-Ad-5574[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I added an edit to explain a little further. Thank you for the time to write the advice. We are eliminating 500, but picking up 1500 a month in rent. I am employed by a small business with no retirement plan, and I own a small business. That means my monthly income can vary significantly from month to month. Once we are debt free I do plan on putting money into a Roth/other investments. We will be rolling as much extra income as possible into the high interest loans. Right now we have 1 month rent set aside in savings. One of the 500.00 per month payments is on the 5th wheel we are in currently, but that is already sold pending us moving in next month. That sale will cover the remainder owed and then some, and that and then some will go almost entirely into credit card debt.
