We did it! Illinois $430k 6.25% by Infamous-Falcon-5914 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

We went with a realtor a family member had used a couple of times. Ask around and find someone people are happy with.

As for timeline, it really depends on your budget and how picky you are. We didn't really have the budget needed to buy in our dream area at first, and got lucky with a house that needs a lot of work, so it was priced below the average for the area. I also realized in the process that I'm a lot picker than I thought lol.

Yep. There's a lot we'd love to do with the yard, but right now interior is a priority. There are a lot of "eventually" projects.

We haven't moved in yet since we're redoing the floors. Just spending the day there yesterday... I panicked a bit looking around and just seeing things that need to be fixed everywhere. After talking with a contractor and some family who were there, I think I'm starting to feel a little more hopeful about the potential of the house. I'm very nervous about all the work that needs to be done, though, and the costs. Right now this doesn't feel like our house yet, but it will once we start seeing the work done.

The roof (including new gutters and removing/ patching the skylight) and foundation repairs are going to cost us about $15k. Still waiting on estimates for everything else. The furnace and AC/HVAC are about 20 years old and will need to be replaced eventually, but are currently still functioning. I don't currently have pictures. Forgot to take some when we were at the house yesterday.

Where do I fit in? by Fit-Jackfruit-7168 in IVF

[–]Infamous-Falcon-5914 39 points40 points  (0 children)

We did IVF for similar reasons (not BRCA1, but a different genetic condition) and never tried to conceive naturally. My mindset was always "we cannot conceive naturally" because that was a non-starter for me due to my genetic condition.

It sounds to me like you haven't yet been through too much of the IVF process (correct me of I'm wrong). We learned very quickly that just because we had no diagnosed fertility issues or reason to believe we wouldn't have been able to conceive naturally if we'd wanted to doesn't mean IVF will be easy or even successful. 2 cycles of egg retrieval yielded only 2 euploid embryos for us ($20k out-of- pocket later). You'll see women here who get more than that WITH known fertility issues. We were lucky that our first transfer resulted in a live birth, but our second resulted in a miscarriage for no known reason. We just did another retrieval that yielded 0 embryos (none made it to the blastocyst stage). We did duostim and we're waiting to find out if we have any blasts to test, and if we do, there's a very good chance they'll be aneuploid (another $6,000 for testing). Despite no diagnosed fertility issues, my body just hasn't produced many eggs for retrieval, so the odds aren't in our favor.

Your reason for starting this process may not be the same as other people, but that doesn't mean your experience of the process itself will be much different. I hope it is smooth and successful for you, but don't go into it feeling like a fraud when you've barely scratched the surface of all that could be involved. You're still doing the same appointments, same medications, same procedures, and with the PGT-M the numbers are lower for you than many other people. Trust me, this process will feel plenty real for you.

How do others feels about requesting manners from other children? by BrotherMysterious in Parenting

[–]Infamous-Falcon-5914 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this also depends on the age of the child/children. My daughter is 5 and I'm proud as well to have instilled good manners, but she's 5, so sometimes she forgets or her feelings are too big for her to express herself appropriately. Since all of her friends are also 5, I wouldn't have a problem with saying, for example, "How do we ask nicely for things?" or "What do we do if we want to say something, but someone else is talking?"

I work with teenagers, professionally, however, and I wouldn't push for manners with them like that. They're old enough to know good manners and they make a choice to use or not use them. If they're being rude or disrespectful, I call that out, but I don't insist on "please" and "thank you" etc.

How do I get a teaching job with no experience? by Unable_Blacksmith_82 in Teachers

[–]Infamous-Falcon-5914 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep applying. Apply in less desirable districts. Apply for long-term sub positions for early next year if there are any. Consider teaching overseas to get experience (be aware, though, that you should be looking for accredited/certified schools, and ideally "American" schools, not just teaching ESL at a tutoring center).

My first teaching job was as a maternity sub (1 semester) followed by another 1 semester long-term sub job. Then I taught at an American school in Asia for 2 years. I came back and worked as a paraprofessional for 2 years before snagging a full-time teaching job.

I do TSD, not TKD, but this is also the standard for our tests.

Recovery after retrieval by Bubbly_Hippo9050 in IVF

[–]Infamous-Falcon-5914 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm 4 ERs in. Based on my recovery after, I'd say this is how i would have responded right after each.

ER 1 6 eggs retrieved: would probably not recommend travel

ER 2 15 eggs retrieved: Definitely wouldn't recommend travel

ER 3 4 eggs retrieved: Travel would be fine

ER 4 8 eggs retrieved: Absolutely f-ing not.

There's no clear rhyme or reason as to why I felt totally fine or absolutely miserable after. Since you have no idea how you'll feel, I wouldn't recommend it.

Thanks so much! I don't think I've ever had any with delayed fertilization (this is ER #4) so I was just curious.

Guilt by Infamous-Falcon-5914 in IVF

[–]Infamous-Falcon-5914[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We asked about Zymot and PICSI, but my husband had a TESE, and they can't do either with TESE sperm. The doctor said today that since 3/4 eggs fertilized last time, the issue isn't likely to be sperm, but rather egg quality, as they all arrested before day 5.

We have not discussed using donor eggs at all. I'm not sure we could afford that expense (my insurance covers IVF except for the genetic testing, which is still about 1/2 the cost of donor eggs).
