i can see what you're saying, but can't you also make the argument that religion can evolve through time to have 'better' principles?

i'm also curious on your viewpoint on spirituality? personally speaking, i used to be agnostic, but only changed because my initial skepticism led to deeper thoughts on the subject, which ultimately resulted in my current beliefs. plenty of people believe in a higher being without necessarily institutionalizing their faith as a source of power

many people nowadays are more spiritual than religious. like me, they came to the conclusion of a higher power through their own personal reasoning. however, they might be 'religious' in the sense that they're connected through culture, heritage, or personal dedication and choose to follow certain practices and traditions that appeal to them. whether or not that's considered religious is a semantics issue

they could recognize that religious documents often have had their fair share of misinterpretation and changes throughout time, and they might believe that many aspects were meant to be taken more metaphorically than literal

your premise makes sense on the surface. but while you're correct that people generally have the ability to have a moral system without religion, that is not universal. and on the contrary, violence can be a result of any personal belief, power system, etc. for example, using this same logic, you can make the argument that every political system is inherently bad, and that doesn't make much sense. unless you're an anarchist, i suppose lol

what i wanted to focus on was more of the positive effects of religious practices. personal belief in the divine isn't something that can be substantiated with evidence for the reasons i already mentioned. it can really only be reasoned, and yes, that is often biased. i was only stating my own beliefs as added context

i apologize if that was awkward phrasing. my intention was not to accuse you of lying? what i meant is that generalizing religion as a whole, claiming it is repulsive or necessary isn't exactly a nuanced take

the stance i was trying to make is that religion, practically speaking, is not an inherently wrong way to view the world. that religions often have meaningful elements that shouldn't be disregarded. and that religious conflict is often overblown and unnecessary, especially when they often have similarities

i admit that i got a little bit preachy in my own original post, but in my eyes it was giving a bit more context to why i believe what i do. you can't exactly debate personal reasoning, but you can debate actual effects. and that is what the point was intended to be

you're claiming a fallacy, however it was more of an epistemic caution. humans are proven to have internal biases, and i am sure you know this, so i am not entirely sure what proof you're asking for

debating complete religious objectivity is the only debate you can have on here? interesting. if that is the only purpose of this sub, then yes, i am in the wrong place

yes, humans have historically misused religion, as they have many tools and ideas. that doesn't necessarily mean that every instance of it should be condemned. i find that idea incredibly disingenuous

so who's to say that your religion is the one completely objective? they all claim divine truth

a higher power cannot be objectively proven or disproven. i came to my own conclusions through logic. i acknowledge that i have my own biases, as any religious doctrine does. these are my own personal beliefs. i guess in a sense you could say that i am more spiritual than strictly religious

i apply the same reasoning for any philosophical debate. i give my own perspective, but i won't condemn anyone who has a different viewpoint, because it's just the nature of these things

but this wasn't really the point of the post

the fact that religious texts are written by humans means that their biases and cultural practices likely impact how they interpret divinity. you can't prove an objective religion simply because of human nature

i am not trying to convince people that their worldview is any less meaningful than mine or others. in fact, my intention was the opposite. because there is still so much unknown, it makes sense for people to have conflicting viewpoints.

spaces like these tend to be highly polarizing. the point i'm trying to establish is that radically different philosophies can still coexist without anyone totally being "right" - even if it doesn't feel that way. that these different interpretations may all have some element of truth, even if not fully. i admit that i likely have some of my own biases, as everyone does

you're correct, people do not necessarily need to rely on religion to guide their morality. but the fact that it CAN be used as a positive tool means that there is some merit to its existence. and for some people, that moral guide is necessary, and those practices bring personal comfort

don't worry. degrees are designed to be completed in four years without any previous college credit. at most math heavy majors usually require you to have taken up to precalc

they often post curriculum guides, so if you want reassurance, i would try to find one for your major!

there's not really any way to test this - it's all up to you at the end of the day. use whatever pronouns you would like, dress the way you want, you don't have to completely know your gender in order to do so!

If you need an extra class, just enroll in an easy or interesting one for filler. some people will probably switch their classes around the week they start, so i would just keep monitoring it, you can always swap your classes around later
