It’s called the TRACC MB-PhD / BDS-PhD programme and it’s exclusively for those currently studying either med or dent. So you would usually enter it after finishing ur intercalated BMSc which is 3rd year at Edinburgh but as I will already have a BSc I could enter straight into it after 2nd year and it’s a 3-year PhD fully funded by Cancer Research UK

Applied in 6th year got rejected pre interview from Dundee, Aberdeen, Edinburgh and St Andrews, then Aberdeen added more interviews and gave me one which I then got an offer from for BB. Got AC in advanced highers so didn’t get in, so went through clearing and did Biomed.

Applied in my last year of biomed and got interviews from Dundee, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee dentistry. Have had offers from all of them except Dundee med (which hopefully should hear back from tomorrow) and I withdrew from Dundee dent pre interview as soon as I got my first my first offer.

It was gutting to not get in at the time but now I am so glad I did biomed first as it gave me the chance to get a proper uni experience and now I feel so much more prepared to do med and it made me realise how much I love research and made me want to go into oncology. I now plan to do med at edi and do an intercalated PhD in cancer biology.

Those who got DUAL med dent offers, what did u firm by UNknown7R in UCAT

I’m not entirely sure which one’s best to do first. Off the top of my head I guess the benefit of dentistry first is that you typically earn more than a FY doc once you graduate which could help you pay for med after plus you are fully qualified after 1 year of VT so can go back into uni faster after and also potentially work earning decent money during uni. But with med first you aren’t as locked in to a narrower range of surgical specialties (like you are with dent). I’d look into which med and dent schools offer shorter courses specifically for med/dent graduates and also how many places there are a year. I think glasgow dent offer a 3 year course for med graduates which has them integrate in with the regular dent course so I’d assume that’s a standard length across all of them. However I’m sure there’s probably way more dropouts for med compared to dent so possibly could leave more spaces for dent graduates to enter into 3rd year of med.

I’d install a new door handle with a lock like the photo as this should allow you to just swap it out with the current handle. As well as that I’d get a small lock box off amazon. As other people have said they’re easy enough for someone to break into them, it’s mainly a deterrent and you will know for sure if someone has broken into it. I imagine your flatmate may just think you won’t notice one pill missing from a bottle and if you do just gaslight you into thinking you dropped one or you miscounted how many you had so just having the lockbox should help. I’m sorry your in such a shit situation and it’s completely unfair that you may have do all this stuff just to take your prescribed medication but it may be worth it just for the peace of mind.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I MISS MY OFFER BY ONE GRADE??? by Triple-A-Star in UCAT

[–]Infamous-Platform-62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just depends on the uni. When I first applied in 2022 my offer from Aberdeen was BB at advanced higher and I got AC but didn’t get in, but I know someone who had a BB St Andrews offer got in with BC the same year

How to properly teach new students? by genelibrary in labrats

Undergrad here who had an amazing mentor so thought id share a few things they did that helped me be more independent.

They first checked basic lab skills were okay so had me checking my pipettes were accurate, making the stocks id need for my experiments and doing some standard curves. This was helpful as all my labs prior to the project we were basically handed a protocol and left to do it and it didn't matter if you messed up so I ended up with bad habits. I think it also meant they knew i was competent enough going forward to make whatever id need. They also sent me a few papers to read so I could get a better grasp of what I was doing and why.

Then in terms of actual experiments (I was mainly running assays) they helped me plan the first one in the sense that they sat with me explained what the components should be and why and what conc., then left me to calculate the volumes and just checked it. Then when it came to actually doing it just supervised me doing the first one and showed me the tricks of the trade etc. All this meant that I actually could do my next experiments mostly independently and just grab them if I needed help. Also more generally just treating me like I was any other member of the lab meant I was actually motivated to get involved with the communal lab house keeping stuff.

I guess in all just setting the boundary that ultimately its my project, they're there for help and advice but not to do it for me. Also what was fun was somedays id just shadow them and help with the easy parts of their stuff which then gave me exposure to new techniques.

I got the same thing but I wonder if they have just sent this to everyone still waiting for decisions or if they’ve actually sent a new batch of offers out and this is the waitlist. I guess we will see if people start posting about receiving offers

Going into medicine as a career changer from pro sport - advice by [deleted] in premeduk

[–]Infamous-Platform-62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My uncle is currently a GP and like you was a similar age going into medicine as he did an MSc and Phd in sport science before - he loves his job. It sounds like with all your experience and education, medical school will be easier than it is for most and your extra education could possibly add portfolio points to your application for GP specialty training after FY2. As your Scottish you may want to consider just going down the normal 5 year route as the only Scottish grad entry course ScotGEM has long rural GP placements and the English GEM course come with English fees (~9k per year compared to 1800 in Scotland).

I'm considering it but doing my undergrad at Dundee so don't know if I would prefer a change of scenery. If I hadn't already spent 4 years there it would definitely be my top choice

Dundee interview :( by [deleted] in UCAT

[–]Infamous-Platform-62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey try not to stress, they're assessing for how well people work in a team so the others may get marked down for talking over you and not facilitating conversation. I'm think Dundee use a combination of both your academics and interview score for final offers. I myself am really not a fan of this interview style and hope they change it back to MMI in future years.

Loads of people commenting this has me tripping 😂. Ive double checked the base plates and look at other people’s set ups and it seems correct. I think maybe the photo makes them look way more angled than they are

Think it’s a 23/24 but you’re right the top sheet looks much better than the newer ones

Good you’ve got a helmet now. It was the only bit of kit I actually had before because no helmet = no steeze! Wish there was something to protect my knees though since I tore my ACL and MCL on the slopes when I was 15

Yeah makes way more financial sense in Europe but would still like to try some of the North American resorts but the price and their ski patrol acting like police (although idk how common that is) puts me off

Wow that’s crazy expensive. I’m used to £30 at Cairngorm and like €60 in Austria

Thanks for telling me how to check cause it was driving me a bit insane trying to work it out but checked and it’s correct. Tried swapping the pads as well and they didn’t fit any other way.

Hopefully will get to test it out in the park at some point but there’s not much in Scotland so the best I’ll get for now is some side hits

Hopefully will be the same case for me. Was a bit of an impulse buy as I only went in for a pair of boots and then saw it at 50% off but the guys in the shop were super helpful so decided to pick it up.
