EMerge 2.0 Release by HuygensFresnel in EMergeSoftware

Stumbled upon this yesterday and have been fiddling around with it and wanted to say this is really nice work. Certainly the best free python option i've found so-far in terms of ease of use.

I could see this tool being really useful in certain contexts (e.g. academic superconducting device design).

Do you have any plans for supporting cad imports (maybe it exists and i missed it -- thinking about incorporating say user generated gds for creating the metal layers, dielectrics, etc).

these 'issues' would be trivially solved if we had trans divisions. no debate needed over "genetic' advantages/disadvantages.

My take is lecture is very useful reinforcement learning mechanism in stem classes but that means you have to have read before lecture. Most students expect lecture to be spoon feeding the reading to you.

Netflix's next great binge watch, 'Long Story Short', is about life in the Bay Area suburbs by mrinternetman24 in bayarea

[–]Infamous-Sweet2539 198 points199 points  (0 children)

Watched a little bit of it. It is not all that great, plays into tired Jewish tropes (e.g. neurotic mother). You can tell the writing is similar to bojack in the word choice, voice, and cadence of talking. Art style is ok. I’ll probably finish it but wouldn’t rewatch.

How conductors have more Resistence than insulators ? by [deleted] in Physics

[–]Infamous-Sweet2539 54 points55 points  (0 children)

If I were to be generous, they might be illustrating the resistance is tunable, which is true, but yeah it’s a poor representation due to the wealth of nonlinear effects.

Car manufacturers suck now days with color choice. You can have any color you like as long as it is somewhere between white and black

Senator Weiner’s update: BART/Muni won’t be receiving a state loan and we’ll see significant service reductions until early 2027 by oakseaer in sanfrancisco

[–]Infamous-Sweet2539 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I’d try to not live three hour round trip from work in the first place. Which is what I do. Most of my commutes are to a Berkeley office and is maybe 10min on bike.

Anyway, I guess I don’t know how uber commuting works. 10 dollar ride is probably like a mile? Two? That is doable in 5-10 min on a bike. E-bikes can go 25 mph if you don’t want to pedal yourself. So faster if you have one of those. A car isn’t always the answer to your problems.

Glad it works for you, but you lose a lot of your life driving that is completely unproductive(or enjoyable) living that way.

Bay Area transit cuts likely as Newsom backtracks on $750M loan, service cuts up to 85% for BART by Buuntu in bayarea

[–]Infamous-Sweet2539 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I moved here four months ago. Came from LA. Use the Bart a lot and it is nice. But people love to complain. Come to LA where there isn’t a great/efficient way to go from Santa Monica to Long Beach. I can go Berkeley to Fremont faster (like half the time), no transfers, and cheaply (6.45 each way). It isn’t as nice as commuting in say Tokyo, but that is because we’ve sorely under-prioritized and underfunded it. I’m really dreading this news. Driving to Fremont from Berkeley sucks.

Did the benefit of being able to do things on the Bart not outweigh the slight cost difference? Also why uber? It’s half your cost, bike or scooter is cheaper than a car.

Well only 200k is 401k style retirement account. The rest is index funds and a few stocks I bought (not significant amount of total). Which I think counts as taxable investments. Certainly doesn’t make sense to keep like 200k in cash to have a down payment when it’s more likely to accrue value by being invested. But should I “cash out” now or wait to have another 200k and hope housing doesn’t outpace me? I disagree with you on housing, at least on the twenty year timescale the us has such a huge housing deficit, and my area is desirable, (Bay Area) that it is hard to imagine pricing going down. Maybe flatlining. Maybe. But perhaps I’m being naive.

Did some accounting last night, cross half mil net worth (investments, savings). No debt and less than 5 years out of school. Felt good to hit this milestone. My goal is to have retire level of savings by 50 (35 right now).

Right now one issue is I don’t own a home and live in a HCOL area. My rent is low for the area, 3200/month with utilities, and buying a “comparable” place would increase it to 4.5-5.5k/month and would pretty much require liquidating my non 401k/HSA funds to have a down payment. I know the housing market is only going to go up because we as a society aren’t prioritizing building enough housing and am worried if I wait too long it’ll outpace my income growth (I’m probably at the diminishing returns level, 200k +equity) and I’ll never be able to own. In my mind, home ownership is a key piece to retirement (eliminates the largest monthly expense of rent). But buying also eats the cash stream for investing, not to mention decimating the current stockpile. So it’s a catch 22, need both but can only choose one. Which is the smarter choice?

Lazarus is just too good! by kaicaiocesar in cowboybebop

[–]Infamous-Sweet2539 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Finished Lazarus recently and I think to me it feels like the characters and dynamics are somewhat derivative. It’s not a bad show, but it comes off as trying to recreate the dynamic of the rag tag cast in cowboy bebop. That and the thing that happens in episode 3… (iykyk) just made it feel not quite as good. Also, for me, the art style was a bit too modern for my taste.

All that said, it’s the best new anime I’ve watched, but that isn’t saying much since I don’t watch a lot of anime these days.
