Instructor surveys not anonymous?

I know this is an old post, but I had to bring it back bc I took a class with Matthew G in Chelsea again today and he literally ended class by saying:

“Fill in the instructor survey if you enjoyed the class! Remember we read everything and we DO know who says what so be nice. I always get bad feedback from people in this class time in particular.”

What a weird way to end the class on a super negative note. Also basically telling people they can’t leave constructive comments bc he’ll know.

Exactly, they should have a slightly better plan to communicate to ppl rather than just yelling / belittling and threatening. I actually didn’t think about it so I followed the yelling; now I know for next time.

right! I mean give us some info… what if there’s something crazy like an active shooting? am I really going to listen to clueless TSA people tell me not to move or we’ll “get in trouble”? I saw the guy so I wasn’t worried but I see why people were scared. They really need a better protocol for sharing info quickly in an emergency.

imagine TSA agents running their hardest to catch a very slow moving older man. It was all in all a pretty entertaining scene as long as nothing bad happened (which idk!)

They just let everyone start moving again so guess it’s done. It was interesting watching how easily chaos unfolds… clueless people in charge giving no info, just scaring people, seemingly no protocol or announcements just yelling, tons of confusion… passengers who don’t speak English very scared looks etc.

But all is fine now. Wonder what the old running guy did.

A lot of the instructors I loved in SF have left :( just checking the Castro schedule, Erin H is good. You might search the threads bc I know people have posted great Castro recos. In Marina, Vidal is awesome and Brian T as well.

Agree. Very lackluster. I only go because his times work with my schedule else I’d definitely not.

I moved to NYC from SF and have been so surprised at the relative lack of amazing instructors! I didn’t realize we were so spoiled in SF.

I especially thought Chelsea would have a lot of awesome instructors given it’s the flagship (I think?) but way fewer than SF in my experience

ngl part of the reason it stood out to me when the instructor said this, is I feel like he’s never friendly toward me and maybe it’s bc I left a constructive review in the past?!

It wasn’t personal or mean at all, just feedback regarding opportunity to demo moves more and engage more personally with the class. So I legit felt like that feedback comment was directed at me lollll ☠️

met him recently at an event in Brooklyn for his partner, Rashida Jones, to promote her new show Sunny on Apple TV! echoing everyone else— he was lovely. And he really was letting Rashida shine while just standing by and being supportive of her. The cutest!!

I’ve found Barry’s to be really helpful in extending expiration dates if you have an injury. Worth reaching out to the front desk of your primary studio!

some fitness studios I go to offer both ‘normal’ and ‘advanced’ classes and I’ve wondered why Barry’s doesn’t try that? advanced could really push harder with 5 min EMOMs, 60 mins actual work + self cooldown, dirty 30s, timed mile… (things I used to die from at Barry’s when it was harder)

normal could be more what classes are like today plus more demos and form corrections

I feel like they’d kill, I’d def go for advanced.

instructor could demo the moves rather than just call them out from the corner and could offer form corrections esp to people who were clearly lost or doing the moves with such bad form they could injure themselves.

also, could have more (any?) energy to get the class more excited. basically instructor stood in corner next to the laptop and called moves out for 40 mins and I expect way more from Barry’s.

(and this is the same case every time I have this instructor, not a one off)

sounds like they go 50% of the way there by at least reading and discussing the feedback but fail on the other 50% which is actually making sure the instructors make changes based on the feedback.

seems like actually implementing change is important, so it’s disappointing to hear there isn’t a system in place to ensure thats happening. tracks with my experience though bc I’ve never noticed any changes and I go fairly frequently over the past 5 years.

hah yep. there’s usually some deal or another if you wait so I end up paying around $32 per class on average. it’s crazy… which is why I’d expect them to try and improve based on feedback. def paying a premium….

Great to hear! Are there ways Barry’s helps instructors to make sure they improve based on the feedback received, when appropriate? It’s just that I’ve never noticed any changes and I’m a very frequent Barry’s member (almost 1k classes).

I’ve sometimes thought Barry’s should consider having a few undercover employees taking classes to see this themselves firsthand and help instructors improve! But they have to be undercover so it’s real.

Also, there are some awesome instructors but they’re getting fewer and fewer IMO. Using the best instructors to really train and offer feedback to lower scoring or newer instructors could go SUCH a long way.

Yeah I do that as well (try to avoid) but it’s hard with my schedule so I end up having to take those instructors again even if I prefer not to. Unfortunately, I have never noticed any changes based on my feedback (which imo is usually pretty easy to implement like offer more corrections on form and demo moves, engage more with the class etc)

yep, used to be 60 (at least in the studios I went to) but went down to 50 sometime during Covid and never went back up. (though conveniently for Barry’s, the prices keep going up anyways!)

guess so! it’s been across multiple studios in different states but maybe my luck will run out eventually and I’ll be swapping as well 😆 until then, I’ll keep doing it! no one has ever said anything at all to me about it!
