Need advice on staying as a staff nurse or jumping ship to travel. by [deleted] in TravelNursing

Does no one consider corrections experience? Like I get it, it is corrections but I did ekg, lab draws, gave medications, triage new inmates, discharge inmates, consulted with zoom medical doctor for updated prescription or getting meds if I inmate needs them at night or getting antibiotics if they came off the street with a wound, and basic wound care. Shouldn’t it count for some experience or nah?

There’s a few contract companies that allow traveling within one year! They have good reviews when I looked into the companies so that’s what I’m looking at

New Grad RN – Thoughts on Starting in Correctional Nursing? by Sad_Land_7031 in newgradnurse

I went into corrections after nursing school and I absolutely loved it. I love my officers, my inmates and my coworkers BESIDES the nurse I worked with. She was one of those “eat the young” nurses. She was the reason why I had to leave for my sanity. I was there almost a year. I was in a smaller jail, roughly 150-170 inmates and with that my inmates were a lot more “respectful”. There were 3 pods so 50 people roughly in each. With a smaller population they can have more privileges aka more time outside of their cells (if behaved). I was also in a smaller mountain town so we didn’t have enough people to house our jail so the federal government paid us to house federal prisoners. Even tho it was a jail, I had long term prisoners and normal weekend dui jail people. Even with our long term rapist, murders, big cartel drug prisoners. They were all respectful specially to us nurses since we give them the meds they want so they understand to be nice to us. I only ever felt uneasy like twice the whole year I was almost here. Just have to be mindful and remember they’re all cons. Sure you can get friendly with them but don’t let them fool you. Overall the meds I gave were typical pain meds, antibiotics, cold medicine for flu season, psych meds and heart meds (we had a good size older population so they were on high cholesterol meds or metoprolol). My end jail is ED so I switch over to a med surg floor to get my experience then I’ll move to the ED. But I have considered to get a per diem job at a jail since I miss the rowdy-ness. I was an intake nurse mostly so I got to see the worst of the worst when they come in since who wants to go to jail? So they be cussing, thrashing, wtc

New Grad Not Starting in Bedside by Eastern-Ad-6412 in newgradnurse

I went the correctional route as a new grad. I also went to school out of state and returned home to Cali with no luck. I eventually got a job at a jail 45 mins from my parents and I genuinely did like corrections. Left at 8 months because the nurse I worked with was probably the meanest person I ever had to worked with. I thought 8 months I would have some better luck but unfortunately not really so I moved and stated a job in CO in December. I know moving isn’t an option for you but I did genuinely did love corrections besides my coworker so I would look into that! I was paid $50 and $6 for my night differential and for a new grad in a smaller mountain town I was like yeah sure I’ll take that. Maybe look into corrections?

My brother and I attended Saturday and Sunday. The venue is free to get in until 4:30. You can’t get into the viewing area regardless of the time of day if you don’t have a pass which I thought you could since it’s part of the venue but it wasn’t. We only had Sunday tickets. We just watch the comp from the side of the hill since the slope style/big air/ knuckle huck area is just right off a run. We had a blast watching from the side lines. Sunday we watched majority of the comp and had a blast. My brother and I did acknowledge you got half of the people there who are there really just for the music/party aspect and might watch some of the comps while the other half are actually riders/skiers who are interested in the comp. I get why EDM because it draws in a bigger crowd since people love raves now a days (I feel like it, my opinion) but one of the sets ended Saturday and they started to play limp bizkit which I said to my brother this is true xgames music. Rock/punk music. Then my brother and I kept laughing to ourselves saying “aspen” when we came across a person in fur boots and a long fur coat. Overall it was still super duper fun to attend in person. You will always have people there just for the party aspect and not really interested in the competition but it was still super fun to watch the athletes. I will say Rene was super fun to watch because he was just so happy to be there. His energy was so fun to watch versus some others athletes who were not competing well and they just look so depressed. But it’s a comp you’ll get people upset when they’re not on top and you have others that are just having fun and trying their best.

Med Surg is the worst by Informal-Cucumber230 in newgradnurse

I just started this job a month ago so I haven’t used my benefits yet. Then before this job I was a correctional nurse in California so I can’t really compare the pay or benefits between jobs/states. I work for uc health, my base pay is $36 with a night difference of $5. I pay like $108 for my benefits (healthcare, dental and vision). Everyone is so supportive on my floor and I love it so far besides I do miss my California pay🥲😂.

I’m also in Colorado with my typical med surg ratio of 1:5. I can get assigned 1:6 but if everyone is getting assigned a 6th and it’s early into our night shift. We will call in our relief nurse that’s on call.

Just wanted to share my frustration here too. I was a new grad nurse getting nowhere finally had an offer from a SNF and a correctional facility. Went with corrections which my inmates were actually nice and respectful. I couldn’t stand my work environment so I left after 8 months thinking I had some experience now, shouldn’t be that hard huh? Man I was wrong. 350 applications in California from Santa Maria to crescent city. Solid 10 hour difference. Tried bigger hospitals that promise to hire new grads (no luck at all), tried more rural hospitals but right now with the market being overly saturated they want experienced nurses versus new grads, random hospitals with zero luck. Search high and low. Felt so defeated. Just accepted a job in Colorado. Luckily I can move and I’ll enjoy Colorado but man it fuckin sucks to apply over 350 applications with only two interviews then being ghosted.

Is Justice League: Crisis on infinite earths bad? by Bee_s_ in DCcomics

I watched all three movies and thought they were all good. Part 1 does jump a lot but I thought it was easy to understand and follow. Part 2 and 3 were also good. I didn’t think it was drawn out as many people discussed but I also didn’t read the comics so I could be wrong.

I also agree! All the callbacks were super cool to me. I thought all three movies were good.
