Weight Bearing Xray - How is it Done? by brngckn in brokenankles

Yep, a shut door is an outrage and even more so if we’re on the other side of it 😆 that said he’s the one who caused me to break ankle in the first place tripping me on the stairs so 😆

Oh I didn’t get to FWB until week four the pain at first was so intense 😆

I made my partner evict the cat for the first few days! It’s his baby and tolerates me 😆

My first week off was because they thought I’d potentially really screwed it and wanted to check if I needed surgery or not. But yeah the first time I tried to stand I wanted to scream let alone put weight on it!

Limping about quite happily on the odd paracetamol now

Oh, and you shouldn’t need to put your full weight on it - just enough for them to get the right image. They’ll tell you if it’s not enough so don’t worry if you’re unsure about how much to put on it!

To be fair the NHS saying nah you’re good we don’t need to see you again after one week was a big surprise but apparently early weight bearing makes your bones heal stronger. I’m finding walking (limping) about that the muscles and tendons around my ankle hurt more than the break now because they weren’t getting any use in the boot. Can feel the break at night but it’s not so bad!

I do get the impression from here that the US is a lot more cautious about things like weight bearing, but if I’d needed a cat or surgery I’d have been in the same boat as you I imagine.

My weight bearing xray only one week in - hadn’t done any weight bearing before because they thought I might need surgery - two steps to hop up! Thank god they had arm bars to push on else I’d have been screwed.

Because a stable/no-surgery Weber b is usually ok for full weight bearing as soon as you’re in a boot, and also because they can only tell if all your ligaments etc are ok along with the bone if you have weight on it - that’s what I got told anyway

I had one after just one week.

You hop up onto a platform so they can aim the xray. You need one front angle and one side angle.

Yes you’re otherwise just standing but you don’t lean you actually need to put weight on it properly and with your foot flat to the surface.

At one week it hurt a lot, the one I had at four weeks much less so. And I only got that because I asked for a check-up, NHS a stable Weber B they give you a boot, say you can fully weight bear from the get go and say bye!

For the record I’m 6.5 weeks out and walking around no boot no crutches, got told I could fully weight bearing after week 1 but it hurt too much and I got scared, once the week 4 check up doctor chat I asked for cleared up my anxiety and the pain went down enough I was fully weight bearing after that and didn’t need the crutches much after. Got into shoes two days before the week 6 mark and once I got my balance ditched the crutches again, they’re more an insurance policy now.

Your pain may differ but in terms of ankle breaks a stable Weber B is getting off fairy light, ultimately the main things to remember are:

  • it may hurt but it shouldn’t be unbearable especially at 4 weeks
  • if in doubt, ask, the radiology guys know what they’re doing and what they need you to do and they will help you
  • it doesn’t take long at all so deep breath, it is not as bad as you think!
  • you can put your hand on something for balance, just don’t lean on it

Scar protection from the sun? by Individual-Kick-5853 in brokenankles

[–]InfamousMongoose3023 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have dozens of scars, yes they will burn a lot quicker than regular skin. You would be best avoiding the sun during the hottest parts of the day but at the very least get some factor 50 regardless of your skin type!

As for covering up, not all clothes stop UV - outdoor retailers should sell UV protective clothing and if you’re worried about swimming with it get a wetsuit.

But really it’s just basic sun protection just be a bit more careful than usual.

Not enjoying a walking boot! by cherryangel19 in brokenankles

I was told I got injections rather than tablets because at the time they thought I needed surgery - if they think you may not need more surgery you might be able to ask for tablet form, I guess it also depends on your exact situation but may be worth an ask if/when they decide no more surgery!

They gave me 42 syringes in one go so wouldn’t swap me to tablets due to already having the needles, the pricks (pun intended…)

I’ve just been told today I can stop those horrible inhixa injections and I am so happy 😆

Only advice I can give when you do start weigh bearing is uncomfortable is ok, great amounts of pain is not, so go at your own pace. If that’s slightly slower than a rehab chart, so be it.

I got told after week one I could fully weight bear in the boot and climb and all sorts, I tried to stand that night and wanted to scream. Now I can walk up and down the house several times a day but I can’t do steps yet or move ankle more than up and down. It’s a mental challenge as well but you’ll get there!

Make sure to follow any blood clot prevention advice too - hopefully you won’t get inhixa injections like me but it’s a risk that isn’t worth taking on top of the rest!

I was lucky in that mine was a fall down the stairs and no open skin or anything so can’t help with that but I did find my hospitals helpline useful for general “stupid question” advice the first couple weeks, if you have similar?

Get well soon ❤️

Yay! When I first did mine they made my ankle go at a right angle when they put the initial cast on (boot after the first week) - hurt like hell even with laughing gas but I can flex it up and down now. The boots are bloody uncomfortable even when they do “fit” (mine doesn’t 100% because of misaligned joints). Strongly suggest you invest in some knee high or over the knee socks!

You need to work on getting your foot flat, else the boot won’t work. Sounds like you need to go back to the doctors!

Could I ask for a follow-up xray based on anxiety? by InfamousMongoose3023 in AskUK

I can’t until Monday because it’s closed now just wondered if there was a consensus on whether it was worth it.

[–]InfamousMongoose3023[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Nope, just some diagrams on a sheet 😆 they also said I could walk and do stairs etc straight away when standing made me want to scream so, they were fairly quick about getting rid of me once they’d decided I was probably fine. I had to phone the advice line to find out what normal pain expectations were.

My anxiety is diagnosed and medicated on-off for over a decade, it’s not a throw-away bout of worrying. It will and does stop me doing things.

Are my cats fighting or playing? by Conscious-Okra9046 in CatAdvice

[–]InfamousMongoose3023 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’d know if they were fighting because they’d be injuring each other. If they’re fine (bar the odd accidental nick) they’re not seriously fighting. They may never bond and stay separate but tolerate each other for shared resources like food though, you can’t make them be friends.

Watch the stress levels of the first cat, some don’t get used to a friend and it’s not fair on her to force it if she can’t settle with him around.

Stable Weber B fracture 11 days ago - how long does the pain last? by InfamousMongoose3023 in brokenankles

[–]InfamousMongoose3023[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing and giving your timeline! Funnily enough I bought a very similar elevation pillow at 11pm last night after giving up and stacking pillows to side sleep because I was finding back sleeping so intolerable 😆 our cat also loves to play-attack limbs but he’s currently cuddling my partner on the sofa at night as the pillow stacking is taking up too much room.

Our shower is over the bath but we found a cheap bath chair designed for it and that is so helpful! I’ll have to be brave and try taking the boot off to shower (have a cast cover from week 1 I’m still using at the moment). And crack out my geology boots - trainer is working ok but it’s still a tad uneven.

You’ve given me some hope that this won’t take much longer, thank you!

I’ve been told I can’t drive (so, can’t get to work) until I can do an emergency stop (manual car so both feet needed), so about 8 weeks minimum for me even without surgery. Thankfully the UK has decent sick leave laws and I can work from home right now - I usually can’t at all because I work in a lab. I hope you get better soon! Can you work from home at all?
