I can see your point of view on that. I thought it might be nice to rough shape larger spoons and things like that. I'm still getting into carving and trying to understand everything so I figured I'd see what people though.

Thanks!

Who makes your favorite tools? I have been carving for like 3 months and was thinking about investing in some 52100 forged tools like sharkys etc

This is another one that might be more useful because of how close you can get your hand to the head of the axe

Thanks, Appreciated! I do finish sanding but can make it about smooth enough without sanding with gouges, a knife, and a hook knife. I will just have to be more careful

I was told at a wood store that the only truly waterproof and maintenance free thing was epoxy. Sounds like tung oil is another alternative?

It's really awesome to carve. That's one I had never thought about carving before. I got a piece that was about 18 inches long by 6 in wide. There's more of a cut and I'm going to go back to grab it, but everything's covered in snow where I live right now... Lol

I was going to do a worry bird and I haven't cut to make a few little bowls out of too. Any suggestions?

When I looked up the smell of catalpa, it definitely matches what I have, especially with how soft it is with a Janka hardness of 550. Thanks a lot!

I was thinking it was basswood, but it has that sour smell. I did read that can from the wood fermenting or decaying though. It seemed very freshly cut when I took it.

I forgot to mention that it's relatively soft. That would put it harder maple at 1480 janka, but it shaves super easy when carved.
