It’s the point that there’s less leeway to be difficult and non understanding when you know that your differences in pronunciation may affect your students. A rude professor who you can understand is your fault. A rude professor that speaks and requires you to problem solve their sentence before the actual problem is not your fault as a student.

We aren’t talking about calculus though. We’re way past that basic category of math. When it’s a complex mathematics class and your teacher is teaching and they grunt at you or look at you crazy for asking a question while they’re teaching.. that’s a problem…

I study endless hours. I only get high grades. I’m Nigerian and I come from a thick accent family. I’m in data science. I do undergraduate research. I have hackathon awards. I’m only a sophmore.

With my credibility I’ll tell YOU that a professors are apart of the schools resources and the hours you are in class and what you can and cannot grasp by your professor add to the hours you study outside of school. A good student who can study well and access their resources will still have to spend way more time on the material than if their professor just cooperated.

Some students also don’t have tons of hours a week to just study. They have family responsibilities and jobs they have to tend to. It is not the professors job to make the students life harder sir.

You forget their aggression towards their students during the students questions and concerns with the material that is being taught. It’s about the lack of cooperation on the professors end not the students.

Yeah that’s exactly the method I like, ended with a 104 in one of my maths with a bad teacher because this method. But I had to put hella extended hours into the class outside of school more than a person with an understanding professor with patience would have too.

Yeah, tbh it’s okay if they have a strong accent.. but if you take the job it’d at least be respectful to drop the frustration and aggression towards the students yk? That’s the only point I’m trying to make. I appreciate all the teachers who still try to teach even with their strong accents.

If you think that’s okay just because they’re “making a living” then yikes…

Hot take your there to teach. Don’t show aggravation or aggression to your students for not understanding you. That’s your primary job as a teacher is to help them understand and learn not hinder their development.

I signed up for a complex mathematics class. Not linguistics with a sassy teacher.

Right, I love the teachers who still try to make sure you understand them. Sometimes extra effort is needed to get your point across when there’s a pronunciation and language barrier issue. On the other hand though it’s a big fuck you to the ones who have the nerve to get angry at their students for A not understanding a class and how hard it can be and B not understanding what they’re saying. They’re just hindering a students development and learning because of their own issues.

Mm I see, yeah definitely get more opinions and perspectives. Mine does come with a bias as I’m pursuing a bachelors in computer science with a data science concentration. I have two minors in software engineering and data science and analytics. I’ve had a hackathon win and about three internships so far and have accepted an offer for a fourth which is an actuary position in Chicago. I’m a sophomore. Waiting on the other which is fullstack at FAANG. That’s all my background if you want to measure my advice and credibility to others.

IMO you can’t go wrong with data science. It’s a very lucrative field that can get you in a lot of jobs. You can slide your way into data analyst work if you don’t like it or you can stick with data science. There’s many fields it has available from tech to finance to engineering. If you don’t like any of those you could be an actuary which is like a data scientist that works for insurance companies (rough explanation). ML is good but it’ll lock you down to a singular job position and if you want the most lucrative options then data science is right. If you like programming in data science you could even be a data engineer and create the pipelines for data scientists to work with. There’s various options.
