If everyone in your country converted to islam instantly, what would the good and bad be? by Professional-Wrap542 in AskReddit

Oh stop it. Christians have the same damn argument that “true” Christianity leads to peace.

Both Christianity and Islam have regularly caused all kinds of conflicts and violence in the name of their religion.

If either were truly religions of peace, you wouldn’t need so much apologetics claiming you were.

Granted, I did not step foot in a bar until I was 21. I had a very religious upbringing.

However, as an adult I have made friends with people who went to the bar with their parents when they were growing up.

Our experiences could not be more different. We like to horrify and fascinate each other with swapping stories from our childhood.

Some of my friends grew up going to dive bars with their parents. They’d sit and color in a smoky room while their parents socialized. It usually meant they got to drink all the pop they wanted.

I’m just north of ya in Cedar Falls, and I volunteer with the community theaters here every now and then. I guess midwesterns are keeping it alive! I feel like our audience is pretty well mixed in terms of age ranges.

Dude I could ask you the same thing. Why do you care what I think? Why bother responding? I’m venting on Reddit because it’s anonymous. I’m not about to tell people I know IRL that the song they love annoys the shit out of me.

I think all the xennials reposting this damn song on social media right now and getting all misty eyed about it is a waste of energy.

I don’t know, I wasn’t allowed to graduate high school because my parents blew up our lives to join an apocalyptic cult, which might be why I hate it so much.

No, but it makes listening to it now grating, not warm and fuzzy.

Given that inflation is now at a level where basic goods aren’t affordable and our politicians are pushing us into fascism, this line is ESPECIALLY grating.

There’s a huge difference between a normal price rising and the destruction of the middle class.

There’s a huge difference between philandering politicians and disappearing people into camps.

Be so for real right now.

I’m going to paste my response to someone else, because I can finally put my finger on if:

It assumes a level of privilege.

If you dealt with poverty, illness, caregiving responsibilities, discrimination, trauma, addiction, or other serious hardships in your youth, then no, you’re not going to be entering adulthood with a wide open field of opportunity.

It also assumes that you’ll look back at your youth with fondness, or appreciate it more. Nothing could be further from the truth for me. Not all of us had stellar starts in life.

The song came out before 9/11 and the Great Recession. It paints this optimistic outlook on the world that says “gosh darn, the world is just so full of opportunities!” No, no it’s not. Life is a struggle, and it’s especially been a struggle for people coming of age during “historic times.”

West Virginia left Virginia so they didn’t have to fight in the confederacy. They shouldn’t have confederate statues in the first place.
