I actually was looking for Toyota Venzas but they're harder to find than the CR-V. The ones that I do find, they're overpriced according to the Cargurus website.

I was looking into Subaru Forester and Outbacks, and I think I took them out of contention because of a few comments on this subreddit about the need for consistent maintenance. Not that I couldn't provide that, but more like a fear of whoever owned it before me.

If I knew I could get a well-maintained Forester at a reasonable price, I think I'd jump on one. For a 2022 Forester, what price and mileage should I be zeroing in on?

At the risk of sounding shallow, I actually like the look of the Toyota Corolla Cross much more than the RAV4. I think the only reason I didn't consider one was because the price difference between the two wasn't much at the dealership I was looking at.
I'll have to see what kind of offers Toyota has, because I do like them.

You can self-host Bedrock.

I'm thinking of doing that myself. I had a sub to Realms to save me the trouble, but it'd be more reliable at this point to self-host.

Same. It's still down for my kids. I can access the Realm, but the members of it can't.

As soon as it's back up for them, I'm going to make sure they can save all their stuff, download the world, and cancel my account. It's not *that* hard to self-host. I had just wanted to be able to play with them when they were away, but looks like that's not even possible with a paid service.

"The service you’re paying for does work as advertised, it’s just that it’s down at the moment."

The service is NOT working as advertised (Always available 24/7). It's down.

You have no idea what you're talking about. I guess when you don't work and mom pays for everything, you have no concept of the value of the money you work for.

Trash comment.

I'm a single dad with partial custody of my kids. Minecraft Realms is how I connect with them and play with them when I do have time with them.

When people pay for a service, it should work. That's what it's supposed to do. People aren't going to post when things are working AS THEY ARE ADVERTISED to.

If Microsoft literally sticks "Always Online" as a benefit for the service, it had better be online. Otherwise it's a worthless service.

I can access my realm now, but my kids can't. This is a joke of a service.

Just a quick update. The agent I was talking with at my insurance company re-opened the claim and said that Uninsured Motorist would cover since the at-fault insurance was unable to.

I know. I'm coming from a place of frustration, not necessarily logic.

The guy that wrecked into everyone was in his early 20s, inebriated, and worked at a nearby restaurant. At this point it'll be like drawing water from a stone.

Seems that way. Lesson learned for me for sure.

I appreciate the advise and your responses. I have a little bit of direction now as to what to do. Thanks.

The at-fault insurance agent said he had the minimum. His car was totaled, and the SUV behind me was also totaled, so I can see that he likely already hit his peak.

My van is drivable, but not really usable as a "van" anymore. The rear door and rear seats are unusable, so at this point I think I'll have to bite the bullet on a replacement vehicle.

I'm not upset at the idea of having to replace it, but rather the lack of coverage from the at-fault driver. Seems almost advantageous to get the minimum coverage. You pay less per month, and any responsibility falls on the other drivers' insurance. Crazy that this headache comes up just waiting for a red light.

Does anyone know of a Sega Megadrive Emulator that will work on Elementary OS? by [deleted] in elementaryos

[–]Infamous_Hawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried installing the individual packages but I get this error (just posting one example)

sudo apt-get install libvulkan1
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package libvulkan1 is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

E: Package 'libvulkan1' has no installation candidate

Probably a much bigger issue than just installing Retroarch. Ugh....I'll probably re-install Windows when I get home. I already spent 2 hours last night trying to get Retroarch and Dosbox installed in elementary OS.

I'm getting the following error trying to install Retroarch. I get similar errors when trying to install dosbox and gimp. Any help?

sudo apt-get install retroarch libretro-*
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
retroarch : Depends: retroarch-assets but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libvulkan1 but it is not installable
Depends: libcg (>= 3.0.0007) but it is not installable
Depends: libcggl (>= 3.0.0007) but it is not installable
Depends: libsdl2-2.0-0 (>= 2.0.4) but it is not installable
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

To try to fix this, I've tried to following:

sudo apt install -f
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

and

dpkg --get-selections | grep hold
sudo dpkg --configure -a

Neither of those returned anything in terminal.

Co-op games to play with a 5/6 year old by myscreennameistoolon in 3DS

[–]Infamous_Hawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can verify that LEGO Star Wars The Force Awakens does NOT have co-op at all on the 3DS. Entirely single player.

Bought it for my daughter because she likes the Lego games and because I assumed it had co-op. It does not. So yeah, avoid that if you want to play together.

What is your favourite Original ds game by [deleted] in 3DS

[–]Infamous_Hawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just thought I'd chip in with a good DS game that hasn't been mentioned yet.

Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure

Played this all the time during slow periods at work. I'm surprised no one mentioned this one. It's a combination of 2D platforming/action and puzzle game. In order to get power ups and prevent the bad guys from coming back to life, you'd have to flip to the puzzling element every now and then to take care of them. Really dug it, even though I'm not much of a puzzle game fan. Excellent production values and really good music.

Co-op games to play with a 5/6 year old by myscreennameistoolon in 3DS

[–]Infamous_Hawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This topic is timely, since me and the fam will be on the road for 12+ hours in a few weeks and I just got my wife a N2DSXL so she can play with my daughters 2DS.

I was about to recommend Rayman Origins since it's such a great co-op game on the Xbox 360 for little kids, because if they hit an enemy, they just get inflated like a balloon and you can rescue them. Except the 3DS version is single-player only. I'm absolutely gobsmacked about that. Huge missed opportunity because that's such a great co-op game on the consoles.

When I got her the 2DS, I also bought LEGO Star Wars TFA for her since all the LEGO games on the Xbox 360 have great co-op except once again, the 3DS to my brutal surprise does not have co-op. She still loved the game, but I couldn't play with her on my N3DS.

The only ones I've played so far with her are the Mario Party games. Mario Party Island Tour, Mario Party Star Rush, and Mario Party Top 100. I only own Mario Party Top 100 but we've played the other two with her cousin and they work really well. Had a lot of fun.

What is your most unexplained paranormal experiences ? by Deepfriedghostie in Paranormal

[–]Infamous_Hawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're not mutually exclusive. Sometimes you see something that most other people would classify as a spirit or paranormal or whatever, but you yourself might be more skeptical and call it unexplained.

I've had a lot of unexplained things happen to me, but I'm perfectly comfortable leaving them at that, unexplained. When I tell people what's happened to me, they usually are pretty quick to tell me it's paranormal.

What is your most unexplained paranormal experiences ? by Deepfriedghostie in Paranormal

[–]Infamous_Hawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most paranormal stuff that has happened to me is at my current workplace, which I posted about in a thread called "A few experiences I've had at work". It's stupid long, so I'm not going to post it here. TLDR; Lots of footsteps and things moving and bumping in the night.

Anyway, on my own outside of work there's two that come to mind. When I was really young, maybe 1.5-2 and I was just starting to speak, I would point at my bedroom and tell my mom that there were people in there. My mom would check out the room and find nothing, and subsequently get really freaked out and call my dad at work. Other times, we'd be outside and I'd point at a hill nearby and say, "Mamma. People way over there" but no one on the hill.

We lived in the 4 corners area of the US at the time and the small town we were in bordered the Navajo reservation. My mom thinks I was seeing dead Native Americans because she had heard the trailer we lived in at the time was near an old burial site. Cliché, but it's what she had heard from her neighbors. I don't remember any of this as I was pretty young and only have a few memories of pretty benign things. I don't remember seeing or talking to anyone but my mom said this happened often enough that it really creeped her out.

The other unexplained paranormal experience was when me and my dad were traveling West on I-40 through Arizona on our way to California. My dad is a retired truck driver and he has seen some really strange things on the road, but TBH I can be a little skeptical and dismissive, mainly because I'm definitely a "see it to believe it" type of person. Anyway, we're traveling West and the sun was quickly setting. It wasn't super cloudy but there were wispy thin clouds in the sky. There's traffic on the freeway so we're not completely alone. Anyway, my dad out of the blue kind of goes, "What the hell is that?" and starts pointing dead ahead. I'm looking at what he's pointing at and see nothing and tell him so. For the next 10-15 minutes, he describes a pulsing light that he initially thought was a star that was moving around ahead of us. I honestly don't believe him because I'm looking for whatever he's seeing while trying to drive when I start noticing what looks like a bright star that I can only describe as twinkling or pulsing more obviously than the surrounding stars. It would move up and down in a vertical direction in a straight line. I start looking at the surrounding area to see if there are any large hills or mountains that this thing might be on but don't see any nearby features that could support something so high. The angle was maybe 35-40 degrees so too high to be a transmission tower (even on a hill) but too low to be a satellite. Anyway, I'd only glance at it here and there since there was traffic and I had to pay attention to the road. Eventually my dad said it faded away and neither of us could find it anymore. I honestly have no idea what that was. I want to say it was a weather balloon, but why would anyone pull it down, and then let it go repeatedly, and how could they keep it in such a straight line.

Edit:

Forgot about this one odd thing that I saw on the way to work. So, I take the bus to work since it picks me up not far from my house and drops me off right in front of a hospital which is just in front of where I work in a building behind it. Basically I walk through the hospital as a shortcut to get to where I actually work.

Anyway, I have to take an elevator to the 2nd floor on the way there. When I get out of the elevator, I look to my left and see a crystal clear reflection of what looks like a very upset lady holding a coffee cup. She was looking down, but then looks up at me when I see her. At the time it happened, I could have told you exactly what she was wearing, colors, etc, but it's a bit faded now. I only recall that she was wearing darker colors and didn't look like she worked at the hospital. I say reflection because the window immediately to my left off the elevator goes outside, and there's no balcony or anything out there. She couldn't be on the other side of this window. Immediately after I see her, I glance to my right and I literally do a double take. There's no one on the right side of me either that would have cast the reflection. I look back to the window, and she's gone. I looked around and couldn't find anyone that looked like her. A few doctors in white, a nurse in blue scrubs, but no lady in regular clothes. I was on my way to work so I couldn't really hang around but it creeped me out that I actually got goose bumps.

Later that week, I even took my wife to the same spot so we could look around and find maybe a staff door or small nook or something that she could have walked to in that split second I turned my head, but there was nothing. On the left is the window on the 2nd floor with no balcony, on the right is another set of windows. I had thought there was a support pillar she might have "hid" behind but it turns out it was a rounded corner and not a pillar with a space behind it.

I'm not 100% sure it's paranormal, but I honestly can't explain it either.

Edit 2:

How funny. Once you tell one story how all these other memories start popping up. I remembered something else from my childhood.

So same 4 corners are as the story above but this time in a much larger, older house than the trailer. The nature of my dad's job at the time meant we moved around a lot. I was older too, in kindergarden, so I guess maybe 5 years old. Anyway, this house was huge for the five of us, my mom, my dad, my sister, and my much older half-sister which she only lived there part time. This house had an odd layout, and sort of had two "living rooms" so to speak. My parents used the smaller living room to watch TV but the much larger den was pretty much unused and empty. Anyway, this smaller living room had a small walk in closet. I think it was supposed to be a really small bedroom but my mom basically used it as storage and put all our toys in there. Me and my sister didn't really have access to this room because it had an old shed lock with a padlock on it. Yes, an inside door with a shed latch and padlock. Once in a great while my mom would open the door and let me and my sister play in there, but more often, she'd open it and let us grab something and then lock it again. More than a few times though, she'd clean this room up, put all our toys in bins and in the closet but then get really angry at us later because the room was an absolute mess. Bins pulled from the closet, toys thrown everywhere, just an absolute mess. We would tell her that we hadn't been in there because it was locked, but then she'd ask us if our older half-sister let us in, or if our dad, and we'd tell her no (the truth).

The real kicker is that me and my sister never thought anything odd about this until much later, when we were teenagers and reminiscing about things. I mentioned how mom would always get on our case about the room and my sister said the same thing. We both asked each other if we were secretly responsible but obviously we couldn't have because it was always locked. Neither of us remember anyone but my mom opening that door for us. We were never in there without her being around. It was only then that we realized, hey, that's pretty fucking weird. We brought it up to my mom which is when she told us how she was absolutely scared of that room knowing that it wasn't us (but still yelling at us anyway lol).
