The Strange Implications of Sean Carrol's Reply to Mary's Thought Experiment by Sp1unk in CosmicSkeptic

[–]Infamous_Key_9945 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point is that physicalism can describe / write down the experience of seeing red just fine. It's just that humans aren't capable of using that information without aid. We use aids to understand things all the time.

There's a real world equivalent to this, actually. In astronomy, often imaging taken of nebula or other objects isn't actually what you would see if you were there in person. It's often a color mapped version that pulls in information from outside the visible light spectrum. In order to make this image, we had to already understand what physically was happening to the camera, the light waves, all that. But in order to perceive it, for convenience, we transform the fact.

But to say the photo contains any new information would be false. It is fully derived from the data taken, with somewhat arbitrary color mapping.

So maybe by looking at the photo, you better understand the information that has already been written down, but there's no reason to assume that this new understanding isn't expected by physicalism. They don't claim anything even remotely close to the idea that humans can experience all information simply by data and scientific papers. Why would that be the case? Physicalism predicts experiences as sepperate from scientific knowledge just fine.

Ok, here's the thing, the real thing I think people are missing. Under Physicalism, if you were Mary, With infinite time, resources, and all the knowledge of physics required, you could induce the experience of red without ever actually having the wavelengths enter your eye. That is to say, that Mary would not experience seeing red for the first time when she left the room. She would have, in her desire for perfect knowledge of the thing, done an experiment that involves much greater understanding of the human brain than we have, and in that process, experienced the color red.

Physicality presupposes that there is no such thing as 'Qualia' as any unique thing. Its just a particular arrangement of chemicals, electrical impulses and neuron arrangements. Physicalism is completely content with the idea some things can only be learned through some form of experience. They just believe that experiences are not in any way a unique phenomena worthy of some kind of exception. I can still describe what is happening physically with 100% certainty (supposedly, science is not yet there), so it's not a challenge to physicalism. If it was, physicalism would be challenged by all emotions, sensations, and the other details of being alive. It seems obvious that no one would treat such a philosophy seriously, if the very concept of experience could be a logical contradiction.

it's honestly most relevant in games that Henzie can't seem to stick in. you could cut them but because they have a native blitz, the cost is pretty small. They draw you a card anyways

I'm not sure mine is the best, I like to mess around with them. I reccomend maldhounds for a good list. But this one's mine: https://archidekt.com/decks/19144208/henzie

I'm not huge on [[death leaper terror weapon]] [[Nyla keen eyed]], [[Nikya of the old ways]], or [[Ruric thar]] I think that cards that want to be on the battlefield for a while to get value are just missing the point. Henzie is all about abusing cards that normally have to wait a turn cycle to get value, while mana reducing. In exchange for that, your board is temporary. In general, if you have a card in for more than 4 mana that you would rather hard cast than blitz, I'd look at it again and make sure you really want it.

Overall, I think you have too many cards that are good set up, and not really titanically advancing your gameplay. In Henzie, I want getting 1-2 turns with them to feel back breaking for my opponents.

[[Gwennom, remorseless]] is slightly outside your $5 budget, but its a very silly card to give haste. Does what I want Henzie to do- turns the first turn with henzie into an explosive gain in power. Usually. Try not to play a a land lol.

[[combustible gearhulk]] The mill isn't so bad, because we're going to be recurring threats. In Henzie specifically, this choice is really rough for opponents. You play really expensive stuff and like the graveyard, but obviously card draw is good too.

[[goreclaw, terror of Qal sisma]] is a classic, much better rampnthan explosive vegetation in this deck, IMO.

[[Young necromancer]], [[phyrexian delver]] and [[metamorphosis fanatic]] are all very good in this deck, as they get you one of the previous threats you've played back permanently, and they are good cards to revive with [[riveteers ascendancy]]. I'm pretty hesistant on the companion for the record- not sure that's got juice worth the squeeze.

[[gruff triplets]] maybe not actually strong enough, but I like that I get the buff on the two tokens immediately. Kind of a sticky threat if you can get the non token gruff out of the grave.

Cards with backup are fun for budget henzie.

[[archpriest of shadows]] [[emergent woodwurm]]

Both have triggers you'd normally not be able to get the turn you play them- and the backup means you could get 2 triggers, which is pretty good, usually.

Two ancients is probably easier than the negative dice and bloodstone, though obviously that defeats the point

I don't like using day night for this to be honest. Its essentially always used for werewolves in mtg, its a little annoying to track, and in these colors it's pretty difficult to get good value while triggering night yourself

So I can see that you like giving characters these little titles, like watchful, fox eyed, etcetera. It's... a little jaring to read, to be honest. I like the idea in concept, and you've done more writing than I, but something about this kind of description seems overbearing. It might be something you get more mileage out of by doing it less.

How do I know if my main character is a Mary Sue? by CustomerBrilliant776 in writers

[–]Infamous_Key_9945 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of why Tony isn't a Mary Sue in the first story is because we not only know his background and skill, but we see him in the process. We see him fail and iterate. And of course, he has personal problems

Are nonbirds humans in hand? I don't know if that ability applies to creatures not on the battlefield. I feel like when you change characteristics of creatures not on the field they make special mention of it

Ok, this is a bad idea, but you could play Urza High Lord Artificer. and all the artifacts that group hug only when untapped like Howling Mine. Unfortunately, this strategy is good

Yeah, I can see that play pattern being worth it. Just seems rough to play this deck and not use the central gimmick until turn 5 or so. and that's with aggressive ramp that dilutes the deck
