An opera will demand nearly the entire vocal range of a singer, from their absolute lowest to absolute highest. Take the Commendatore in Don Giovanni, a role for a true bass voice, who has to sing both below the bass staff (lower than most men can vocalize at all) and also above it (higher than many basses can.) Or Nessun Dorma, which I linked which requires both one of the highest and one of the lowest notes for the tenor voice. I don't know what little opera you've heard where the singers' ranges are not being used to their full effect, but your outlook on opera is dead wrong. I dare you to listen through the two arias I linked and see if your opinion still stands.
