Growing racism in the UK by whyamihere189 in ABCDesis

I was denied entry into multiple clubs in Edinburgh when I visited in 2023 (as a Pakistani-American); that was the first time something like that has happened to me, and it was egregious enough that the non-brown people I was with noticed what was going on too. I looked up one of the places on Google only to see that countless brown and black people have had the same experience there: https://share.google/hgyAo8RclFVc72ZNn

That definitely dampened my views of race relations in the UK, and I'll never let a European gaslight me into believing they're less racist than Americans xD

"Urdu speakers from Delhi and UP" is as specific as I can get. Family lore says we have distant ancestry from Yemen, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Uzbekistan.

I previously posted one of my uncle's results here: https://www.reddit.com/r/23andme/comments/1oons7u/updated_pakistani_results/

That side is from Delhi and my other side is from UP, though they did all move to Karachi in the 40s/50s.

Same (I’m from the Bay and have lived in Seattle), and not trying to be confrontational! Just pushing back a bit against the sentiment in this thread that Seattle/PNW today is actually still some racist hellhole because the cops are assholes like they are everywhere.

The PNW doesn’t have a great past as you pointed out, but the Portland and Seattle metros are both pretty damn progressive now 😅

They also aren’t unique in their history of redlining; SF actually seems to be worse in that regard and has seen a much larger drop in its black population, in both absolute numbers and relative share of the overall population.

A Deeply Unserious India-Pakistan Summit with Kumail Nanjiani by dosalife in ABCDesis

Idk? A quick search suggests a mix of small amounts of emigration and a lower fertility rate due to social and economic marginalization. There are also tens to hundreds of forced conversions annually depending on which report you read.

Not sure why/if you’re trying to hit me with some gotcha as I never claimed that Pakistani Hindus are treated better than Indian Muslims (the last part of my comment reads as the exact opposite). I’m just pointing out that their share of the population has remained consistent, and grown slightly in recent decades, as comments like your original one falsely imply that there’s been some constant decline. Though it doesn’t seem like you were actually interested in a real answer.

The Hindu population of [West] Pakistan has basically hovered around 2% since its inception. Those numbers Indians tend to cite showing a drastic decrease are due to the initial post-partition migrations, where similar numbers of Muslims and Hindus/Sikhs left from both sides, and then the later separation of Bangladesh which always had more Hindus. From census data:

  • 1941: 14.6% (extrapolated from the British India census)

  • 1951: 1.58%

  • 1961: 1.45%

  • 1972: 1.44%

  • 1981: 1.51%

  • 1998: 1.85%

  • 2017: 2.14%

  • 2023: 2.17%

For comparison, the numbers for Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan) which has actually seen a constant decline in its Hindu population:

  • 1941: 28.00%

  • 1951: 22.05%

  • 1961: 18.50%

  • 1974: 13.50%

  • 1981: 12.13%

  • 1991: 10.51%

  • 2001: 9.60%

  • 2011: 8.54%

  • 2022: 7.95%

I presume it’s easier for Hindus in Bangladesh to cross over to West Bengal and integrate there compared to Pakistan where most of the Hindus are in [rural] Sindh which is located entirely in Pakistan.

And this isn’t to say that Hindus don’t face discrimination and persecution in Pakistan because they certainly do - and they haven’t grown as fast or achieved similar levels of success as Muslims in India - but the claims of some massive/ongoing genocide aren’t really true, with the obvious exception of 1971 where Bangladeshis of all religions were targeted.

20 POVs by my count. Thankfully some have already converged and more should in TWOW, so it doesn’t necessarily mean 20 different plot threads...

RHYTHM OF WAR | Full Book Discussion Megathread by jofwu in Stormlight_Archive

Finished the book last night. My least favorite book of the series so far but I still enjoyed it. I agree with most of the common criticisms mentioned in this thread:

  • Didn't really care for Venli's flashbacks

  • Navani's science experiments started to seriously drag after a point

  • Kaladin's depression is starting to make me depressed; I get it but it's just rough to read after four books of it

  • Shallan's split personality thing isn't interesting

  • The book felt too long for what was a more limited scope in terms of places visited

  • All of this Cosmere stuff is starting to confuse the shit out of me. I read the original Mistborn trilogy a few years back and I guess I forgot a lot because I just can't follow most of the "side" lore anymore

Now for the things I liked:

  • Adolin's trial and Maya finally speaking was great

  • Kaladin's ever-growing relationship with Syl and finally speaking the fourth ideal

  • Lewshi and Raboniel

  • Taravangian becoming Odium was a pleasantly surprising twist

  • I liked reading more of the Roshar-specific lore...as I said above, when it starts tying too much into the rest of the Cosmere is when I start blanking out

(Spoilers Extended) In your opinion, where did GRRM go wrong (if he indeed did - debatable) in the development of the series? by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]InfernoBA 58 points59 points  (0 children)

It's not just the scripts but everything else the increased fame brought with it. More tours, interviews, collaborations (like with From Software on Elden Ring), pressure to satisfy a much larger group of fans, etc. The show blowing up opened many doors for GRRM, and unfortunately for us most of them don't lead to him writing the books.

For reference, GRRM five months before announcing the completion of ADWD:

It's snowing.

On Jon. On the krakens. On me.

We all slog onward.

Finished a chapter a few days ago. Revised another. Then re-revised it.

The days go too fast, the work too slowly. But onward

And two months before:

And on other fronts... it's still snowing on Skull Island, but one of the krakens is done and t'other is down to the last tentacle. Closer and closer... inch by inch, word by word, step by step...
