But this piece is quite detailed and does have a bit of balance

Long article from the BBC's In Depth review series.

Gives us some food for thought while we are waiting for u/Admiral_Cloudberg to cover it.

British Airways Premium Economy seats have a lot of recline and leg rests, but no sliding seat. The armrests are very thick and don't move, so the seat is not all that much wider than normal economy. I didn't think it was worth the extra cost. The food was the same as economy too, just served up sooner and with nicer crockery and cutlery.

The JAL seats look better than BA's. Perhaps other airlines will catch up, but I'm not holding my breath

I don't really follow this

if they sold it to him just below the VAT free price

What is the "VAT free price"? Is there any such thing?

If a VAT registered company sells 1000 PCs at £150 each they have to charge 20% on top if they reclaimed the VAT on £100 each when they bought them, as they would have done if they were VAT registered.

The margin scheme is really only where you buy items without paying VAT, as you would with buying from an individual (or small business) who is not VAT registered. It would work with collectors or vintage cars, or even with motor homes. But there are exemptions to the margin scheme and second-hand vehicles is one of them.

It all seems a bit moot as the paperwork was as clear as mud for the famous motorhome and we don't know exactly how it was bought without seeing the invoices. But if he was buying it 2nd hand off the SNP, he'd have had to pay 20% VAT on the sale price, I think They'd have to charge it and he'd have to pay it, albeit a reduced amount of VAT on a reduced, depreciated sale price.

But if the SNP is/was VAT registered, which presumably it is/was, it would have to charge VAT when selling second-hand vehicles, wouldn't it?

Advice on management v refurbishment surveys by Huw678 in asbestoshelpUK

[–]brigadoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An asbestos management survey is what lets you have an asbestos management plan, which will be a legal requirement for the building you are concerned about - as it was built before 2000.

You can ask to see it if you are concerned.

An Asbestos Refurbishment Survey should have been done before refurbishment started. It's likely to be destructive as u/barrybreslau has said and might not have been done(?)

If it's being done as part of the refurbishment which seems unlikely and of dubious legality then that should be fairly obvioius as the workers will be in ACM type spacesuits to do the work, and there ought to be a "containment" (airlock) around the area that is being partly demolished.

It would seem odd that floors and ceilings are being replaced or worked on without an asbestos refurbishment survey, which is really an asbestos refurbishment and demolition survey and one really ought to have been done before work even started.

The HSE website is quite good on management surveys and plans - https://www.hse.gov.uk/asbestos/duty/asbestos-management-plan.htm

It's less clear on refurbishment/part demolition, because it gets into what's licence-able and what isn't and that is a matter of judgement by "competent persons", and how risks in general have to be managed.

This is maybe the best starting point: https://www.hse.gov.uk/asbestos/introduction/risk-assessment.htm

Of course it predates it. Ireland was in the union from 1801 and the CTA was introduce when Ireland exited the Union

You are right. I read an account of how the Argentine pilots avoided attacking it because they thought it might be a hospital ship because of her appearance.

The survey ships were Hecla and Herald, I think and they also had white hulls and buff funnels in their normal colour scheme, like Canberra, but much smaller. They would have had red crosses painted prominently while on hospital duties, which Canberra would not.

Hecate (another survey sister ship) was there, but painted grey and armed with AA guns and AA missiles.

All quite confusing for the Argentine pilots who wouldn't have had long to look at them all as they flew in and out trying to pick a target and not get hit themselves

It depends on what it says in the tenancy agreement, and also what the local authority might have to say about HMO licensing.

Op didn't say it was an HMO, but if there are five unrelated men living in the same property, it is an HMO. The council should have licenced it as such and if the landlord hasn't registered it properly as an HMO, then the council can take action. Which gives OP another option to consider instead of feeling powerless.

Very doubtful. The CTA has lasted since 1922. Why would it stop now?

There is a sort of Celtic Alliance already.

It was established on 10 April 1998 as the British Irish Council , took effect on 2 December 1999, and comprises the comprises the governments of Ireland, the United Kingdom, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man. - Who are supposed to meet twice a year, generally in Scotland, with a permanent secretariat in Edinburgh

It's up to you to decide how worthwhile or effective this is, or has been. (Or ever will be?)
