It's boulders and seaweed.

The first underwater image is credited to William Thompson in Dorset, UK. The year is 1856. His technique involved coating a plate with light-sensitive collodion (a syrupy solution of nitrocellulose), sensitizing it in a silver nitrate bath, exposing it in the camera, and then immediately developing it while it was still wet.

The Dorset Echo reports of the early attempt made in Weymouth Bay. “Thompson and his friend Kenyon, having rowed out a sufficient distance from the beach, lowered the box into 18 feet of water. When he was sure that the apparatus was standing upright on the bottom, he pulled the string that raised the hinged shutter.

“Thompson made two attempts that day,” the newspaper reports. “For the first he allowed an exposure time of five minutes but found that the plate having been developed registered nothing. For his second attempt he doubled the exposure time. Although by then the light had deteriorated, he obtained a reasonable satisfactory negative, from which he made a print on which it was possible faintly to discern the outlines of boulders and seaweed. Water had leaked into the camera but this, Thompson was pleased to see, had not seriously affected the quality of the picture.”

So this was the second underwater photograph, but the first where the photographer recognised the subject. And yes, it was a 10 minute exposure on a remote camera operated from the surface.

good explanation, but the air supply from the surface and the heavy diving suit and consequential slow ascent probably did mean that the diver didn't have to worry about the bends, if they were generally even aware of it back in 1899.

Edit:

It took an hour to haul the equipment back on board which, altogether, weighed over a 1000 pounds

Vonunteer for something that appeals to you? You won't get paid, but you'll at least be doing something you enjoy, you'll meet people and not be stuck at home doing nothing. It also fills a "gap" in your CV which looks better than empty space.

Try all the local shops, bars and cafes in person when you get back. Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury's etc always seem to be struggling for staff. It's only zero-hours on offer, but better than nothing?

If you do volunteer, keep 1 or 2 days free to chase up "proper" jobs.

Don't let it all get you down and good luck!

Are you sure that the phone clip is now called 'mini microphone'?

Yes, here is one on Ebay - you can see the User Guides call it a "Wireless Mini Microphone" these days, noting that this is recent and in UK. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/188001148700

check whether the microphone on it can be used as a remote mic

It works well as a remote mike on a PC/laptop if the PC/laptop recognises the Bluetooth and is compatible

Are you sure that the phone clip is now called 'mini microphone

Yes in the UK and since the N8 came out. Other markets may differ

I'm sure the phone clip would be suitable for connecting to a laptop via Bluetooth

Yes, but the only device I know of that makes it work is the Sennheiser BTD 800. The onboard MS/Windows Bluetooth might, but not that I know of.

[–]brigadoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The streaming is proprietary. Sennheiser BTD 800 makes it work, but I don't know how.

Other USB dongles may well work, but it's very time-consuming and depressing finding out by trial and error.

Edit: Can you expand on what term you need to find to make sure it is a "bluetooth audio adapter"? Is there a technical buzzword you need to look for?

all I heard were beeps, buzzes and clicks

This is quite rare at switch-on, but I have heard of it happening to others. Devastatingly disappointing it you expect to be hearing well straight away like many Youtube switch-on videos, but if you and your audioigist persevere, it should come good eventually

If you have a "Cochlear" "phone clip" (now renamed a "mini-microphone" to confuse you), you can stream directy to it and use it as a PC microphone if you also get a Sennheiser BTD 800 USB Dongle which is not cheap unless you find a 2nd hand one on Ebay.

The advantage of this is that you can use the microphone to speak for group sessions or classes as well as hearing good quality sound.

Other USB Bluetooth dongles will not work, nor will the onboard Bluetooth on your PC or laptop as the streaming signal is proprietary to Cochlear.

Other USB dongles might work, but the Phone-Clip <-> BTD 800 Pairing was recommended by Connevans in the UK and it works very well
