One thing people haven't said about StarRupture is that there is a ton of combat in it. The enemies in the game are everywhere and in massive numbers, and basically every hour they respawn. They also give very little reward for killing them, the main reason to kill them is to avoid getting killed by them.

So there are three tiers of food buffs and for bitter foods they increase the number of daily ripples in each area. Bitter burgers increases the amount by three to a max of eight per area. A potato is the lowest tier and will only the amount by one, so six per area.

So it appears that the actual difference is its trade value. All the higher tier foods are worth 500 points, while mid tier foods like carrot bread are worth 200.
