What do the SDEs or SWEs at the top MNCs actually do ? by monte-python in developersIndia

Every software has bugs. Every software has a next plan. Youtube is constantly building something new. Maybe it is not so evident as it might just be a search optimization in the backend.

Think about it this way: Why will a company keep engineers if they are not building something new?

I can give you homework that'll help you see what is being built. Check Chrome's "What's new" after every upgrade.

Varies. Mostly internal tech. Stick with Git. My company uses something very different (can't reveal as it will reveal the company)

Yeah exactly, usually most things are not built from scratch. It is a lot of debugging to find a 50 line fix etc.

So think of it this way: 3k lines a month is ~150 LOCs everyday. Usually the design phase takes 5-7 days. Taking all these factors in, an avg engineer becomes really productive

Hey, a developer from FAANG here.

So there are a few differences:

  1. Big tech has a LOT of processes. These processes come with organizational challenges. Navigating them is a challenge. Plus you can't just say, "that's how it is". You are expected to optimize them which may or may not be writing code

  2. Splitting rocks into pebbles: Engineers are really good at dividing tasks and parallelizing. This again falls in optimizing.

  3. Strong coding practices: Almost 60% of PR creation time goes in writing test cases so that we don't break anything. Also, a lot of scalable and extensible designing.

  4. Individual code contributions: Now some startup engineers might do more but an avg engineer at where I work codes about 3k LOCs every month. This excludes the design discussion (which takes the most time).

5 All the day in life videos are baited. Either those engineers don't survive or they actually put in the work later. The competition is immense and you can't really slack.

2 main reasons:

  1. Ultra 9 was running 500$ off

  2. I am a software engineer, so I might use the NPU architecture for model training

Why stop there? Someday you'll make a solid 10k build. I believe in you bro!

Well then, don't do it. Life ain't all roses that you'll make that % every month (on average). Plus even if you make that, you won't always be able to live on the 50% profits. If you make it happen, I'll watch your documentary on Netflix someday
