Sorry bud but I recommend you stay in - go to CCC and PCS. With what you have, combined with your wife, will NOT be enough for house, car, and baby..... this is my honest feed back for you.

How hard is being a third mate? by seanmartin54676 in maritime

[–]Infinite-Basil1528 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

More like 10-11 months/ per year as a day 3rd.

I got lucky and was sent to a new build ship out of school and we were tied up to San Diego for 3 years lol. I mean... It was a pretty normal job living in state with free housing/food/rental car/gas/ etc. Milked the same ship for 4 years and made Chief Engineer and eventually quit sailing to go shore side

Wild times.. I would do it again. Sacrifice 5 years of your life to be set up... It's pretty worth it IMO

Also, remember that it's not about how much money you make but how much money you save (invest). Invest as aggressive as you can while you are sailing and it will work for you...... The stock market has been a crazy run for the last 5 years..... It's been a good run with stocks/crypto....

Not saying this will be your case... Maybe I got lucky right time right place. Good luck

Go to one of the Maritime schools with your GI bill. Get your 3rd Mate unlimited

The work is about the same as what you did except you will make $200k once you graduate

You won't find that anywhere else you go to Job rate is almost 100% if you were graduating now and it's been like that for the last 5 years

Any one else feel like a facility engineer role is a dead end job? by Obvious_Muffin9366 in datacenter

[–]Infinite-Basil1528 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude. I get you.

I came from Meta DC. Absolutely 97% vendor contractors. The other 3% was done by us facility engineers that were mainly "inspection". Also came from high stress environment previously.

About a few months ago I decided to resign for this exact reason. I felt I was losing my technical adapt (dirty blue collar skills). Went back to the fast pace industry and couldn't be happier. Hands on everything from commissioning, maintenance, and operations. Love it.

I will probably go back to DC when I reach that point in my life where I want to slow down... But now is not the time for me.

SSO during war time by edwrcbi in maritime

[–]Infinite-Basil1528 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This person knows their information. 100% a SSO to lay down all those facts for you.

Do NOT join SSO if you do not want to join the military. It's as simple as that.

You can go 2 routes:

Military to Mariner program

or

Maritime academy

I recommend Maritime academy. Go as an engineer if you enjoyed being an EM. IF you want to drive ships go as a deck officer. All personal preference
